The magic has vanished. Stop trading back all the time - sometimes you need to draft an actual player. And taking TWO running backs - what's going on?

This may be the worst draft going. It's time to stop giving Bill the benefit of the doubt.

Brilliant, really. RBBCs are here to stay and be invested in. Ridley and Vereen compliment each other very well. Fresh legs, insurance, production, et cetera.

They were doing well until taking two backs but that's the NFL these days. Kills the fantasy value though of both.!

It is a weird draft, but I'll stop giving BB the benefit of the doubt when he stops winning.

What about Woody and Ben?
Ben is a FA, no? Woody would be in the Reggie Bush-lite role.
He may unsigned, but not a free agent.Currently takes 6 years of service, until a new CBA is reached for 2012 and beyond, to become a free agent.

He's a RFA with a 2nd round tender I believe.

Calm down... It is a weird draft for sure and not what fans expected but fans were upset at them drafting early TEs last year and the perceived reach of McCourty. We ended up with a potential All Pro CB in McCourty, two young stud TEs in Gronk and Hernandez to go along with Spikes, and Cunningham. Pats fans never like our drafts but they seem to work more often than not.

How few seasons are left for Brady?? I figure he's good for around 5 more so don't get Mallett pick.
Mr. Bundchen will play as long as the one with the real money in the family allows him.
Was being talked about that Brady had given Bill a retirement time line... and the time is now to try and get a QB to groom. At that point, 5 seems a little long. I'll guess 3 based on the info and the pick.

The patriots had a top 3 run blocking line last season. Given that they also have a quarterback that keeps defenses honest, they should have had more rushing yards.

The patriots are improving in the correct spots. I like their draft strategy.

Its called TOM BRADY.
I remember people ragging on them for the Logan Mankins pick. The more things change...

A bit of honesty. ;) Whether right or wrong.

Two RB's is a head scratcher. Other than that they took an OT, CB, RB, all positions of need, and walked out with another 1st and 2nd round next year...after only 3 rounds. Not sure what there is to not like.

With F Taylor, Morris, Faulk all ancient and injured last year, and now gone, I don't think those are awful picks. BJGE and Woodhead were not highly regarded coming into the league and may just be beneficiaries of a good OL. It was time to reload the position.

As a fan of another AFC playoff contending team.... certainly glad they have a potential late 1st rounder from the Saints and Shane Vereen instead of Mark Ingram.:phew:

:goodposting: It's tough to figure, not the sexy picks but I think you're right. OLine and CB help is huge (Bodden should be back as well), fresh legged RB's...Mallet could very well translate into a high pick as well if they decide to trade him (ala Cassell). Where's the WR and DLine helpthough?

I don't like it. We could have had Delone Carter instead of Rid, Leshoure over Vareen, Castonzo over Solder, and Bowers over Dowling. But I do love that Mallett pick.

Really? I thought a lack of pass rush was their biggest weakness last year. That hasn't been addressed at all. I really like the Mallet pick but I just disagree with the philosophy of constantly trading back when you're on the cusp of a Super Bowl.

I love what Bill's done.Folks don't realize he DOES make his picks. NE has made FIVE picks in three rounds...and managed to add a 1 and 2 next year. Then they'll grab 5 or 6 longshots in the deep rounds, while adding another pick or two next year. Textbook...outstanding work because Bill refuses to reach, and will always accept value even if it means ignoring a percieved "need" temporarily.

The QB was VALUE...need was immaterial, although he DOES actually need a backup QB. Here's a guy who might be starting quality, worth taking in the thrid, even if he's a backup.

At RB....gimme a break. HUGE need position for NE. Law firm was never more then filler, and Woodhead is a dog and pony show...a nice trick player for a few plays a game but nobody you could count on to carry your running game. THEY HAD NOTHING ELSE! (Unless you count 40 y.o. unhealhty RBs on their last legs!) Now, they have a nice 1-2 punch, the trick guy in Woodhead, and still carry Law Firm as what he should be...deep depth. Most of us EXPECTED Bill to take two runners in this draft, one of them high. While 3rd round is a little higher than expected for the second, I think the value was appropriate.

OUTSTANDING work by the Pats, as usual.

I've got no problem with them drafting 2 RBs, but Ridley was a huge reach at that slot, imo.Castonzo over Solder would have made more sense. I like the Ras-I-Dowling pick.

Belichick doesn't really have a very good draft record other than a stellar 2010. I think it's something like 7 starters from their last 53 picks with ~20 still on the roster over the last 5-6 years.

Either way, that risk diminishes with 1st/2nd rounders for the most part, so having too many of them doesn't really hurt :P .

I think they would have killed in this draft if they walked away from the first with Jordan/Solder (Moving up for one of them with 33), but that's me. Can't judge the picks til they get out there.

The offensive line is going to take some lumps this year. The running back picks keep teams from teeing off on Brady. I also like the versatility - they now have two pass catching backs and two north south guys, and they have some depth. Don't forget that the Patriots have lost multiple running backs in each of the past several years, and that's constrained their ability to really pound the ball. Also, they have identified areas of need and successfully turned over entire units in the past, most notably from the Reche Caldwell 2006 Pats to the Moss/Welker record setting 2007 Pats, and the turnover at tight end last year. This year they've turned over the running back unit. That seems like a good thing.

I also like the idea of drafting another corner. The Pats were brutally bad on third downs this year. Would an improved pass rush be nice? Of course. But having another corner is just as good. The Patriots need to be able to defend the multiple receiver sets they face against New York, Indy, and co. I'd like to have gotten a LB/DE, but getting deeper in the secondary allows you to blitz more.

I would like to have had a LB/DE. That's still an area of need, although the addition of Stroud could be a big help to the Pats' line. I wasn't really enamored with the idea of drafting a WR. I think it's frustrating to see highly ranked guys slide to them and have them pass, but the Pats don't rank their players the same way the draft experts do - they look for smart guys who love football and are versatile enough to play in multiple schemes. I don't know if that's the right way to rank them, but it seems like they avoid busts in the early rounds and take their chances in the later rounds.

It looks like the Patriots' goal this year is to play mistake free football, keep Brady's jersey clean, limit their opponents' possessions, and try to get turnovers in the secondary. With that in mind, this draft seems about right.

Finally, as for the Pats trading away picks, they basically take a first rounder, and turn it into a first and a second, then take that first, and turn it into a first and a second, and so on. It hasn't always worked that way, but the concept is basically that they put a first round pick in the bank, which they can withdraw any time they want, and in the meantime, they earn a second round pick as "interest" every year. They didn't trade a first for a first and a second, they traded a first for a second every year until they want their first back. That's a huge asset.

If the picks work out - which is a big if because the Pats have hardly been infallible - then this was a good but somewhat unexciting draft. Until we see, I'll call it a solid B.

The Mallett pick was a pure value pick. Even if Brady plays for another 10 years, Mallett will get interest over time. The more years he is exposed to the best coaching available the better.

I don't think BJGE was ever going to be tendered to begin with. And the odds are better that the position is dealt with when two guys are drafted.

I expect the big pash rusher to come from free agency and or player development.
