Payton on Saints backup QBs (1 Viewer)

With Brees taking mental reps only, backups Todd Bouman and Adrian McPherson took every snap during the three-day mini-camp. But neither received a ringing endorsement from Payton.

"I think they're battling," Payton said. "They might be battling versus someone else on another team, and they don't know it. They're battling to play the best they can, and I think both of them understand that."

Payton also said if the coaching staff feels they won't be adequate reserves, the team would likely look elsewhere for help.

"If they're good enough to be the No. 2, so be it," he said. "If not, we'll find someone else that's good enough to be No. 2."

Bouman is a bum. Easy as that. He played a couple of good games and everyone thought the guy was a talent, everyone thought wrong.

McPherson is raw. I think he has the talent to be another Aaron Brooks but he will never be the type of guy that can get a team into the playoffs.

I still think the Saints should draft Lienart. He can sit behind Brees for two years and then take this Saints team in the right direction.

The saints dont NEED D'brickshaw. The Saints could use a dominant defensive guy like Mario Williams but I don't know if he is worthy of the second pick in the draft. I could be wrong but when you have a chance to draft a franchise QB like Lienart, you have to take it. Not to mention, do the Saints really want to pay Williams the type of money he is going to get being the 2nd pick?

The Saints need D'brickashaw more than they need Leinart, and they certainly don't need another DE.

Because Jon Stinchcomb has that left tackle spot locked down? They need D'Brick in the WORST way.

You do if you believe he's then next Julius Peppers or Dwight Freeney.

Normally, you're not wrong in saying this. But when you're a team that's full of holes and you filled one of them with a high priced free agent at QB, taking Leinart isn't a no-brainer.Having said that, I still think it was a mistake for the Saints to sign Brees.

They moved their rookie right tackle from last year into the left tackle position this year. IIRC he is being tested in the mini camp to see if he can handle it, and that would help determine which direction they would likely go.Edit - It is Jammal Brown from Oklahoma.

That still leaves them short one tackle.

Signing Brees was a good move because it allows them total flexibility with that pick instead of being locked into picking a QB. They can still draft Leinart and if they like him, they can cut Brees after one season with no severe cap implications based on the structure of his contract. But if they want to draft other areas, they at least have Brees already which allows them the possibility of doing that or even of trading the pick. Smart move by them IMO.

If they draft Leinart, they'll have a bad situation on their hands as I don't think Brees will take a shine to that plan AT ALL as it's a redux of the one he just left in SD.
