Pennington to start for Dolphins in week 10 (1 Viewer)

Adam_Schefter A different form of hanging Chads in Florida: Dolphins making change at QB -- going from Chad Henne to Chad Pennington.

Henne did't throw the ball down the field much anyways, so I can't see this hurting at all.

I have Marshall in two leagues and have been a bit disappoointed. Maybe the change will spark something in the passing game.

Doubt it - Penny doesn't have the arm to get it down the field. It will probably result in less INT's though. This is a desperate move - don't agree with it all.

Considering Pennington's inability to effectively throw down the field, I would say it's a slight bump up for Bess and a slight downgrade for Marshall.

I don't see it making a difference at all. Although Henne has a much stronger arm, I heard that the Dolphins were last in the league in attempts over 20 yards during the telecast of the game last weekend.I think worse case scenerio is no change in Marshall's value based on what we have seen so far.

As noted in the other thread, I think this bumps up Bess a bit more. Bess and Pennington seemed to have some good chemistry the past few years.

I'd be more worried about Henne's confidence than Pennington's noodle of an arm.

Agreed considering the teams that they've lost to (Jets,Steelers,Ravens,Patriots) All of them have more talent than the Dolphins IMHO (not saying the Dolphins are a lousy team mind you just not quite in that class yet)

I've been a longtime advocate for Pennington and his abilities. He's been relatively productive everywhere he's been and at age 34 he's still young for a quarterback.

The only problem is that he needs a good line and some quality possession receivers to be effective. And I'm not sure if Miami's got those things right now.

Henne's confidence ???This is the end of Henne on the Miami Dolphins.Pennington is not the future of this team - I would much rather they take a look at Thigpen and see what they have in him before Noodle boyThis is a dumb move.

This news kind of shocked me a bit. I have Henne in one of my main leagues, and with Romo injured I have to now resort to desperate measures to get a QB for this week.

Thanks Sparano for this almighty mess.

Back to the topic at hand. I am confused by this move. It smacks of desperation to me. Sure, Henne hasn't been playing great, but he's still a young quarterback. I wonder if this move was brought about by Brandon Marshall venting his frustration? I'm sure the Dolphins want to use him more, although I'm not convinced that Pennington is the answer.

Marshall is already averaging only 11 yards per completion, how much can you downgrade him. Also Pennington's arm strength has always been misconstrued. He can throw the ball downfield - his completion percentages on deep ball throws was the highest in the league when he was with the Jets. His arm strength becomes an issue on mid-range out patterns where the DB can jump the route.

WOW.. I'm Shocked. Look at the teams Miami has played and the defenses. Ravens, Steelers, Jets, GB, NE, Cincy, Minny.

To me, Henne hasn't been horrible at all....

There has to be more to this than we see - like bad practice habits, off the field nonsense, bad attitude?

Penny only gets you so far, is brittle and is certainly not the future. If Penny does rally the troops that only knocks you out of a range for a QB draft pick.

Oh.. And

Parcells jumping ship... Fergie, Marc Anthony, Gloria Estefan and J-Lo getting more say..... Qb Controversy.

This could get good.

Can't believe they are blaming Henne for starting the year 4-4 with a tough 1st half schedule.

Can't be the horrible play calling from Henning?

Or the atrocious special teams play so far?

To me it screams desperation - they really need to win this Sunday's game vs TEN to keep their faint playoff hopes alive.

At the expense of developing Henne is a bad move

Fair points - Marshall isn't doing much right now at all.As for Pennington, he did have good accuracy when throwing downfield with the Jets. However, those shots down the field were few and far between when the offense wanted to catch the secondary offguard. It just isn't Chad's strength to deliver the ball consistently down the field.

Gah. This sucks. Now I have to decide if Henne is worth keeping in my dynasty league. Anyone think Henne will get the starting job back eventually in Miami, or that he'll start somewhere else next year?

I agree. Thigpen is an unknown. He had that good end of 2007 but can he be a starting QB in the NFL? If the Dolphins are done with Henne, their hopes for the playoffs are pretty much shot as well. I would try to find out what I have at QB for 2011.

I don't see how this could be a downgrade for Marshall, he's already not doing much. If anything this could be a spark for the offense, and if not at least Pennington has the confidence to throw to Marshall. I'd like to see Thigpen get in there, I think that would be best for Marshall owners

As a Dolphins fan I think this is an awful move. Being in the same division as the Patriots and Jet and the overall tougher AFC they weren't going to the Playoffs this year no matter what, 9-7 is about what I expected and they appear on the way to that. Henne needed to finish out the year to see if could figure out how to bring the team from behind and if he was the long term answer. Pennington at this point in nothing more then a solid veteran backup on all most any team (except for the Panthers and Cardinals). With Pennington what do they have one more win maybe (Pittsburgh ?) which if that fumbled is called a recovery they might win anyway. Unless the QB was going to make tackles or block on special teams no one would have won the Patriot game. What they should have done was fired Henning or at least demanded he open up the playbook and take a few shots down field.

I definitely think Henne has the good to be a good starter in the NFL. I can't for the life of me figure out what the Dolphins would be thinking here. They make it through a pretty tough start to the season at 4-4 and have a bit of an easier schedule down the stretch. You give up on Henne that fast for noodle armed Pennington? What are they smoking?

As a Miami fan, this move just doesn't make any sense. Pennington is clearly not a franchise QB. Henne may not be either, but I thought he's been ok and hasn't been the reason they're 4-4. Their schedule has been pretty tough and I doubt their record would be any better if Pennington was QB for those games. How can they expect to go back to Henne after this? Do they plan on taking a QB in next year's draft now? Maybe they just trade for one or sign someone with an expiring contract, although I have no idea if there are any solid QBs with expiring contracts.

Pennington's a decent QB, but Henne's looked pretty good this year. Would have never dreamed they would make this move.

Cant be any worse for Marshall. Might have better numbers maybe less receptions but more TD chances,.
Not sure about that. If Pennington's arm is even weaker now than it used to be, defenses won't even have to respect the deep ball. Henne at least has the arm strength to throw downfield, which at a minimum forces defenses to respect the possibility that he does. I really can't see how this can end well for the Dolphins.

I happen to think that the Offensive Coordinator (Henning) was more of a problem than Henne, but Sparano seems to thinks otherwise. I'm beginning to wonder if Sparano is the guy who can lead Miami where they need to go.

PFT had this on their site this morning:

When new Tennessee receiver Randy Moss plays his first game as a member of the Titans in Miami on Sunday, Moss could be getting an up-close look at one of his former college teammates. There's talk in the locker room that Dolphins backup quarterback Chad Pennington could soon be replacing Chad Henne.Whispers have persisted throughout the season that Henne could be in hot water. Last month, ESPN's Chris Mortensen said there's talk that Pennington could "bridge the gap" between Henne and Tyler Thigpen. With four losses and a shrinking margin for error, it could be that the move will come if the Dolphins under Henne struggle against the Titans. Miami is 0-3 at home this year, a fact that surely doesn't sit well with owner Stephen Ross, who's trying to make the team into a high-profile attraction. In October, coach Tony Sparano bristled at talk of fans wanting Henne to be benched. "I could care less what they think about the quarterback situation," Sparano said, but he acknowledged that Pennington, the team's former starter, is "the 1,000-pound elephant in the room sometimes."That 1,000-pound elephant could be parading around the field on Sunday. Hopefully, someone will bring a shovel.

:lmao: Exactly what I was thinking, he has played the best defenses in the NFL and has had a ton of dropped passes to go along with that. This is a crap move by Miami, I hope they lose out, Pennington will be lucky if he survives vs Tenn who has a dominating line and they will be fresh.

As much as I like Pennington I Hope the Dolphins get run off the field by Tennessee.Sprano and his "coaching" staff need to find out the hard way that Henne wasn't the reason that they started 4-4 (It could have been 5-3 if th Pittsburgh call goes their way)but IMHO they weren't going to be a playoff team this year anyway (but they could have used it as a great learning year for Henne)

I don't know if I'd call it deserate, but definitely its about winning now. After watching NE get beat by Cleveland and NY have to come from behind against Det I think Miami still thinks they have a chance and Pennington gives them their best chance to win now. As good as Henne's arm is it doesn't do much good if you can't make the right decisions. I wonder how often he gets past his first read-maybe 2-3 times a game? The guy just locks on to a player and the defense sees that. He has improved from last year, but not enough. Plus he still just seems no where close to developing a "touch" pass. If a guy is in the flat Henne throws a bullet 10 yards out. His best assett is his strong arm and we've barely seen any of that this year.I will be very surprised if the offense plays worse under Pennington. Very surprised. Of course, that assumes he can still make all the throws he could before this most recent injury. If he has lost some of that(because he was already bare there in the first place) then they will be hurting.
