3600 yards and 19Tds in 2008 for Miami. Had more weapons now. He could be decent I think. From the fantasy perspective, where does Pennington rank now for those in deep and 2-QB leagues?

http://blogs.palmbeachpost.com/thedailydol...had-pennington/Henne also said he holds no ill will toward Pennington, whose 2010 salary will jump from $2.5 million to $5.75 million now that he’s a starter, per his contract.
How many starts does/did he have to make for the escalator to kick in?For all of you that think this is a dumb idea, how do you feel when you read this?

Chad Pennington's teams have never missed the payoffs during any year that he has stayed healthy. The guy is a much better QB than people give him credit for being. The inability to remain healthy has been an issue of course, but he wins games when he plays.I'm going to take a wait and see approach here.Pennington did lead a much less talented club to 11-5 a few years ago.
I'm going to have to disagree here. The voice of firsthand experience. 3-4 years ago Pennington was force feeding the ball to Cotchery down the stretch. These passes weren't way down the field either. The duo clicked so well I got into the playoffs. When Pennington went down and Kellen Clemens took the field I was given a quick exit in the first round. I've noticed this season when Henne targets Marshall in the endzone he's off target with his throws. That's not going to happen with Pennington. As long as he stays healthy that is.Considering Pennington's inability to effectively throw down the field, I would say it's a slight bump up for Bess and a slight downgrade for Marshall.
This is one of the most maddening things that coaches - NFL and college - do. The probabilities are heavily on the side of going for it on 4th down in most cases. On top of the expected value, there's also the intangible benefits to going for it like showing confidence in your players and breaking the will of the defense. The expected values of going for it on 4th were worked out by a Berkeley professor (Go Bears!) and, like I said, fall heavily on the side of going for it in most cases:Dolphin fan here.
While Im not a big Chad Henne fan (and understand a lot of the criticism against him), the guy who deserves most of the blame here IMO is clearly Tony Sparano. For the last two seasons, Sparano has been WAY TOO conservative on offense to the point where it handcuffs the QB. Its painful to watch but Sparano will very rarely go for it on 4th down - even late in games or inside the opponents redzone. He will punt late in the 4th quarter when the Phins are losing even if theres no guarantee hell ever get the ball back. He'll also settle for FG's more than any other HC Ive seen. This puts a tremendous amount of pressure on a young QB and leaves very little margin for error. Sure Henne can be mistake prone, but Sparano needs to do more to lend his Offense a helping hand by deviating from this conservative clock management scheme predicated on old-school 4th down probabilities. Hell, even Peyton Manning needs four downs sometimes to keep the drive going. I dont think Sparano understands that by being obstinately conservative, youre putting MORE pressure on your QB, not less. As a result of Sparano's playcalling and clock management, the Dolphins play from behind more often and theres additional responsibility on Henne to play the role of hero late in games. Thats no way to mold a young QB.
Now dont get me wrong - Henne still stares down too many QB's and has a tendency to be too mechanical in the pocket. But he really could have benefited from some more support from the HC, or at least the OC Henning.
VeryThere are a lot of Posters in this thread showing a lack of understanding of Brandon Marshall as a player. He is not a downfield wide receiver, he is a possession receiver with freakish beast ability after the catch. He is obviously more "downfield" than say Bess, but he is no Randy Moss. I think Pennington will be good for Marshall.Regards,THE FANTASY KING
They had a super-easy schedule in 2008, especially down the stretch. Pennington only threw 19 TDs, but had an incredibly low 4 INTs. He made the TEs look very good - Martin averaged 14.5 per catch with 3 TDs and Fasano had 7 TDs. He'll have Marshall and Bess, instead of Ginn, Camarillo and Bess.I'm going to take a wait and see approach here.Pennington did lead a much less talented club to 11-5 a few years ago.
what is your gut feeling on Bess' rest of season if Penny is the QB?There are a lot of Posters in this thread showing a lack of understanding of Brandon Marshall as a player. Pennington is made of glass and he's not the Dolphins QB solution (Henne might not have been either BUT he wasn't performing that badly that he needed to be benched)Wow, there's going to be a lot of crow to go around if Pennington performs well from here on out. I can't believe the unanimous disagreement with this move.
My disgust with this move has nothing to do with the performance of Chad Pennington. It's about the growth of Chad Henne. We know what Pennington is. He's not the future. What is the best case scenario with this move? Pennington goes 5-3 and they finish 9-7? Maybe somehow sneak into the playoffs and get pummeled by Baltimore again? Miami's problem is not Chad Henne. It's their offensive philosophy. It's awful. Way too conservative. Leave Henne in there and take the training wheels off. Get creative and let him use the weapons at his disposal. There's a lot of talent on this offense. I liked what I saw game plan wise against the Jets, even though they lost. Too bad that was the only game so far this season that they played to win, instead of playing not to lose.Wow, there's going to be a lot of crow to go around if Pennington performs well from here on out. They're gonna have to go on some run to make the playoffs from the AFC East Considering they have Tennessee Than A Short week (Bears on Thursday) Oakland,Cleveland,Jets,Buffalo,Detroit,Patriots. At best I can't see better than a 5-3 finish and IMHO 9 wins won't be enough to make the playoffs from the AFCI'm not a Dolphins fan but I'd be okay with this move were a member of that bandwagon. If the rumors are true he's just a stopgap to Thigpen then that sounds good. Henne imo hasn't look all that great. Or even good. I have no clue how Pennington has looked in practice but obviously the coaches felt he showed a lot more potential to help this team make the playoffs.
apparently the professional football coaches and evaluators that have watched and worked with henne for the last 3 yrs feel that he is not the future either. i realize its a tiresome card to play, but often its the most likely scenario. My disgust with this move has nothing to do with the performance of Chad Pennington. If the Dolphins are looking to dump Henne after the season I would think they would want him playing for a "Potential" trade If they're not going to dump him then he'll be useless IMHO after getting pulled for Mr. Chad "made of glass" Pennington.apparently the professional football coaches and evaluators that have watched and worked with henne for the last 3 yrs feel that he is not the future either. i realize its a tiresome card to play, but often its the most likely scenario. My disgust with this move has nothing to do with the performance of Chad Pennington. No chance of the playoffs in Miami this year (Jets/NE still on schedule = 2 more division losses IMHO) 2-4 div rec + 9-7 record at best = Miami on the beaches after Jan 2ndplayoffs thoIf the Dolphins are looking to dump Henne after the season I would think they would want him playing for a "Potential" trade If they're not going to dump him then he'll be useless IMHO after getting pulled for Mr. All three of them had some measure of "success" as starters so it isn't a surprise that they have become "relief pitchers" as they got older (In Chad's defense though he's youngish he is injury prone)The fact that guys like Pennington and Kitna and Kerry Collins are still starting games in this league shows how hard it must be to make it as a QB in the NFL. I mean out of the hundreds of QB prospects that have gone through the college ranks over the last decade and never got a sniff at the NFL, these are 3 of the only guys that are still coming out of the bullpen. You would think there would be a slightly larger talent pool of serviceable QB's but there never is.
It's possible that him playing lessens his trade value either because he's further exposed as an average (at best) QB or gets injured.I'm also a little tired of the "glass" comments concerning Pennington. He's had his rotator cuff torn a couple of times and broke his arm in a preseason game against the Giants. It's not like he's missed games with nicks and bruises. He's a tough QB who takes his share of hits and keeps going. He's had some bad luck but has battled through a couple of surgeries and keeps going. I'd love to see these message board tough guys take the hits he has and keep playing. The Dolphins almost beat the Jets and lost to the Pats almost solely due to special team mistakes - the Phins believe (rightfully so) that they are playoff contenders. As much as I'd love for them to give up on the season, I'm not sure why their is outrage that they aren't.i think its a bit presumptuous to peg the pats and jets games as certain losses. tbc, im not saying i think the phins will playoff, but its a much higher probability than anyone in this thread has taken into account.
I don't think the opinions in here have a lot to do with FANTASY..... It's more about developing a young QB in the NFL and the talent level of the defenses he has faces so far as well as the future at QB for Miami...Wow, looks like a buncha sad Henne owners in this thread. Are you guys serious? Henne has been terrible. This benching is long over due IMO.
I meant lucky to survive the first drive! This was one of the worst coaching decisions of the year, they got lucky and pulled out the win. I don't think Henne is a superstar, but he is definitely better than noodle arm.WOW.. I'm Shocked. Look at the teams Miami has played and the defenses. Ravens, Steelers, Jets, GB, NE, Cincy, Minny. To me, Henne hasn't been horrible at all....There has to be more to this than we see - like bad practice habits, off the field nonsense, bad attitude?Penny only gets you so far, is brittle and is certainly not the future. If Penny does rally the troops that only knocks you out of a range for a QB draft pick.Exactly what I was thinking, he has played the best defenses in the NFL and has had a ton of dropped passes to go along with that. This is a crap move by Miami, I hope they lose out, Pennington will be lucky if he survives vs Tenn who has a dominating line and they will be fresh.
