Perry to be benched? (1 Viewer)

Looks like Marvin Lewis may finally pull the trigger and bench Perry.

Mon, Oct 13 Chick Ludwig, of the Dayton Daily News, reports Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis could look to replace RB Chris Perry in favor RB Cedric Benson or RB Kenny Watson. Perry rushed for just 14 yards on 11 carries in Week 6. "We're going to look at all that," Lewis said. "We need to look at it and take a hard look, and see what's the best thing for us to go forward. It's a combination of things. I'm not going to sit here and elaborate much on it now. We've got to do better. It's not good enough."

Winless Bengals search for a sparkI've got Perry and Benson (Watson got picked up late last night) in a deep league, and see this as good news. It may finally be time to cut bait on Perry, as I would think they'll start Benson, with Watson the third-down back and Perry to the bench.

Anyone else think that's how it'll shake out? We know Benson's underachieved, but I think they use the rest of the season to evaluate him and see if he could be the answer in 2009.

As a Perry owner... I dont see how the Bengals wouldn't look at replacing anynone on that team outside of TJ.

Perry has been as abyssmal as the entire squad. Lewis really should replace himself, then take it from there.

I agree, aside from Housh, that whole offense needs to be replaced.

Perry is a 3rd down back, and I think he could be a good one on a decent offense. I don't know if he could be a workhorse, but this season shouldn't be his only opportunity to try and prove himself - nor will it be.

How would you define a "3rd down back"? If your definition of "3rd down back" includes being able to receive the ball out of the backfield, then Watson is a good 3rd down back himself already.

Picked up Benson off of waivers for nothing last week. Knew Perry with his fumbling would not keep his job. I like Watson but he has hamstring issues. I think Benson takes this job. Unfortunately best case scenario he is a bye week fill in.

I'm not sure why they cut Watson, but he performed very well last year. I wouldn't rule him out here, especially when we're talking about Benson as the only other alternative.

Your right on both of them , they are both third down back. They need to get a every down back either in a trade ( Michael Bush is supposively on the trading block ) or draft one in the next draft.

How many people were sure Perry would be a good one "if only he could stay healthy and start"

Attempting to pick the leading RB for Cincy the rest of the way is a fool's errand. This O-line will simply not allow anyone to be successful right now. With a gun to my head, I'd have to go with Watson as the leading rusher from here on out.

Tough break for Perry. Unlike most everyone else on the planet I think he has the talent to be a successful NFL RB. But he got healthy for the first time in his pro career, just in time for his supporting cast to crumble around him.

As a Perry owner, I've had my eye on him. I wouldn't soley blame the supporting cast. He has looked very slow when in space. There just doesn't look to be much special about him at all really.

Not the first time I've heard this, but why on earth do you cut Watson, sign Benson, the resign Watson and give HIM the starting job? I gotta believe Benson will be given the chance to fail here.Although, in the final analysis, you're probably right about the oline.

Perry has been bad. I don't see any of these three RB being a worthwhile play behind that OL, especially if Fitzpatrick is the QB.

THE NEWS

It seems likely that Cedric Benson will take over the starting role from Chris Perry in Cincinnati, according to John Clayton of ESPN.com.

Our View

Perry has got little done, and he has butter fingers, which is a bad combination. But it's not like Benson has torn it up, with a 2.6 YPC average this season. And fantasy owners who had him last year will remember how painfully awful he was with Chicago.

This is on Fanball, anyone actually hear Clayton say this. Can't find a link.

Strongly disagree. Best case scenario is that you pick him up from waivers for nothing then trade him to a team with Rb issues that is in the playoff hunt that happens to have a player or two that you're trying to pry loose.

loyalty from a utility type.Vets don't go thru waivers, they can re-sign wherever. It was agreed upon beforehand. I wouldn't be surprised if he got a smidge extra $ for doing it too.

Hey, I hear ya. Please don't mistake that comment for me believing Watson will be worth rostering - even if he is the Bengals leading rusher the rest of the way. Whoever wins this job is the real loser.

If a team is drooling over trading for Cedric Benson - it's rather unlikely they're in the playoff hunt.

IMO They miss their old FB. So many Johnson's and a rook RB with a similar name ...I always mess his up but plain and simple, that guy led the way. Cutting Big Willie was a bigger deal than Marvin clearly thought and probably still has reprecussions(sp?) throughout the line each week. Anyhow, as far as poor blocking, put your head down, and slam into a mass of defenders hoping for a few yards-Perry's kinda smallish for that or maybe it just seems more Benson's style.

I think Perry needs the corner and probably to get out in some space. He used to be a terrific receiver, I have to guess his current poor hands is just a lack of confidence from everything else "going south". Screens to him used to be "money". He only gets like 2-3 catches a game now too.

I liked DeDe. He had a burst to him. I still can't believe IR with a pulled hammy. It was September and the first guess was he'd be out 4 weeks. One other not minor detail is when they were super bad in the beginning, Dorsey had their longest play of the year. He made something out of nothing. IMO They could sorely use that now.

At some point, the Bengals will burn somebody with their passing, as Cleveland did yesterday against the Giants. Only then will the running game improve, no matter who is at RB. Anderson throws for 310 and suddenly Lewis isn't washed up anymore. The same will have to happen with the Bengals. Whoever happens to be the RB that game will get the credit.

i'm considering dropping perry altogether. benson was scooped up off waivers before my turn in the order, so perry is pretty much dead to me. can't start him, worth nothing in a trade.
