Peyton Manning has been medically cleared by two doctors, including Dr. Robert Watkins, who performed the most recent surgery on the Indianapolis Colts quarterback's neck, to resume his NFL career, sources told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen and ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. The sources said Watkins examined Manning recently in Los Angeles and concluded the stability in his neck would have allowed the quarterback to play this Sunday if the nerves in his arm had regenerated to a satisfactory performance level.Watson also instructed the quarterback to continue an aggressive rehabilitation path that provides an optimistic outlook for Manning to play in 2012. Watkins performed Manning's spinal fusion on Sept. 8, and on Dec. 1 declared that the fusion had achieved "firm fixation."Watkins, according to the sources, joined Colts neurosurgeon Dr. Hank Feuer in clearing Manning to play. One source said that Feuer recently told Manning, "If you were my own son, I'd tell (you) to go play."In addition to Manning's optimistic words expressed in an interview with ESPN on Tuesday, in which he indicated he plans to resume his playing career, the medical clearance by his two doctors, the sources said, will bolster his determination to play in 2012.What remains in question is the timeline in which Manning's nerve regeneration to his triceps will improve to the point where he is throwing passes in the manner that helped him win four MVP awards during his 13-year career.According to one source familiar with Manning's medical review, "It's not a safety issue; it's a performance issue." This source added that Manning is "making progress."

Honestly, I'm not sure much has changed. These last two paragraphs seem to be the $28 million issue...

I think he's coming back and will be just fine. The arm strength is important, and hopefully returns to normal, but what sets Manning apart is his ability to read the defense at the line of scrimmage, check to the correct play, and make the accurately timed throw.

If he loses some on his passes it means the offense will have to adjust to him and he will have to hold off on pulling the trigger in some situations. And that is only if the arm strength doesn't come back to 100%.

How much do you have to pay a doctor to say that when you've got $28M coming? $500K?
Do you really need to play again if you're 36 and have 28 million?
I think the point is that he definitely won't see that 28 mil if he's not medically cleared to play. Its unlikely either way, but still.
Didnt he get 20+ mil last year?
I think it was mostly a "thank you" from Indy to Peyton. But, I don't think they give him another "thank you", at least not another "thank you" that large.

I wonder if Irsay signed off on that structure. I get the feeling Polian was the one who pushed for it and the owner was happy to oblige him. First surprise may have been the severity of Manning's injury which ruined any shot at restructuring the deal.

Not so fast...

Rebutting an ESPN report from Thursday evening, owner Jim Irsay tweeted early Friday that the Colts have not medically cleared Peyton Manning (neck surgeries) to play football in 2012. It's clearer now than ever that Manning's camp fed ESPN's Chris Mortensen the news of his supposed medical clearance. "Peyton has not passed our physical," says Irsay, "nor has he been cleared to play for the Colts. Team statement coming on Friday." Colts doctors are reportedly worried about the nerves in Manning's neck and triceps. While Peyton is notifying interested teams he's healthy, the Colts still need the medical excuse to decline his $28M bonus.

Since Manning is still under contract, any team discussing his "availability" is tampering.probably should just get rid of the concept since the league always looks the other way
