PGA Tour Thread: 2019 Season Ends (1 Viewer)

Or a putt off on the practice green
Both chip off and putt off have been suggested.  Both seem kind of anticlimactic.  I understand why players hate penalty shots to win the World Cup, now.

Luckily, so far for our golf trip have we had this happen.  But it's going to eventually.  And we keep trying to find something that wouldn't feel so "cheap", for lack of a better word, to win a three day, 5 round golf Major.

Then I say play "Ryder CUp" style - no carry overs

Question for fellow golfers:

Every year, my foursome takes a small golf trip somewhere.  It'll usually be a long weekend and we'll either play 3 rounds in 2 days or 5 rounds in 3 days.  We play best ball teams.  So if we're playing 54 holes, you'd have to win 28 holes to win the tournament.  Holes carry over and this is where things can get confusing.  If we finish the 54th hole and we tied it, and that hole is worth 7 holes, what should we use to determine who wins those holes?  Most birdies has been the go to for now, but we feel like that might not be the best way to do it.  Any thoughts?
take the scorecards from the rounds and add up the scores from the hardest handicapped holes at each course, lowest wins. If you're tied there then move on to the 2's, etc..

I hate scorecard playoffs. In high school we would always go to the practice green for chip off or putt off. Since then I think every incident has been resolved by extra holes or just calling it a tie.

If your concerned with this, maybe no carryovers for the last nine. That should get things settled by the end.

We talked about doing it Ryder Cup style where you just halve the hole.  But the thought was it might take away from the pressure of that hole that's worth 11 holes on the last day.  Considering we play for nothing more than bragging rights and victory dinner, it's not like there's a lot riding on this.  But something about a hole that's worth 9 holes puts an amazing amount of pressure on you even with nothing on the line.

That said, maybe I'll float the Ryder Cup rules again and see what they think.  At least as one of the options.

So it looks like this year's trip will be back to Frederick, MD.  Right now it's slated to be 4 courses in 2 days because one of the guys can't get a Friday off for a 3 day weekend.

We went a couple years back and played Whiskey Creek, Worthington Manor and Musket Ridge.  All of them were nice.  WM was the surprise nice course, as it was a last minute add.  But I've read some reviews that it's kind of rough of late.

So our four courses are:

1) Whiskey Creek - Ernie Els course that was beautiful.  Really liked this course.

2) PB Dye Course - Wanted to play last time but they had some sort of outing.

3) Little Bennett - Have heard good things, but not many photos online

4) Maryland National - Same as LB.

This is my hood. Whiskey Creek and Musket Ridge are fantastic. Never played MD National. Little Bennet is fun for a muni. Make sure you ride. F PB Dye. Played it once, will never go back. Worst design I've ever played. Thanks for hitting a drive down the pipe, now go find your ball in the ####.

Has Worthington Manor had a rough patch or something?  When we went 4 years ago, it was beautiful.  But all of the recent reviews I've read say that the tees are dirt and it's not in very good shape, especially for almost $100 a round.

Is LB a good course?  You have me a little worried with your description.  We had also looked at a place called The Links at Challedon, but my buddy's coworker said LB was better.

So we are flipping to the new FedEx Champ scoring this year at East Lake?  I heard a mention of the ‘elimination of the confusing ending’ on Sundays broadcast.

Yes, they're going with the "confusing beginning" approach where somebody is going to be -10 before they even tee off.

Jefferson the Caregiver said:
I don't like the way they are doing it this year.  Has to be a better way.  If its Koepka with a 10 stroke lead, give him the money now.
I'm not sure what to expect...Golf Channel said 40-something guys can pass Koepka to #1 this week by winning.

Actually just showed that your FedEx position is assigned a beginning score...no matter what the points differentials are.  So #1 starts with a 2-shot lead, a 5-shot lead over 5th, and 25 players will start within 10 shots of the leader.

I know Fowler is the popular pick for Best Player Yet to Win a Major...but you can make a good case for Hideki.  He just can't putt.

Also, looking at a Tour championship with no Tiger, Phil, Spieth, among others.

30 players is good why again?

Rory hasn't had name recognition in half a decade.

FedEx paid how much for this? Close to a Billion over 20 years?

The immediate future of the game is right there...Koepka, Rory, JT, Rahm, DJ, Schauffele, Reed, Finau...with Fowler, Fleetwood, DeChambeau, Rose at least on the course.  The best players for the next decade.

I don’t think the leads mean much. It’s only 30 players but everyone should be playing well. We’ll see how much movement there is Thurs-Fri but I bet a lot.

@WillGrayGC: Here's how the East Lake leaderboard will start next week:
-10 Thomas
-8 Cantlay
-7 Koepka
-6 Reed
-5 Rory
-4 Rahm Kuchar Xander Webb Ancer
-3 Woodland Finau Scott DJ Hideki
-2 Casey Rose Sneds Fowler Kisner
-1 Leishman Fleetwood Conners Im Reavie
E Bryson Louis CH3 Glover Kokrak

Should be interesting how this plays out. Not sure where to draw the line on who doesn't have a shot to win but seems like -2/3.

Why can't the old way, the one where if you won a tournament during the year you get to play happen?

This whole thing is absurd. And they moved the PGA to make this ####show happen.

Wondering who Vegas likes for a favorite,  Thomas or Koepka 3 strokes behind?

That's the tournament of champions you are thinking of which is in Hawaii in January to start the real season.

They changed the schedule so they could be done before football season which makes a lot of sense. The fed ex cup method change is another story but will give it a shot this week before saying I hate it.

Am I nuts to think that the tour used to be all the champions and some X wgr?  What is wrong with that?

I really don't like the Fed Ex format.   This tourney next week may be terrible, not into pros starting with birds in hand.
When they started the Fed Ex (I think in 2007), I thought it was dumb.   It felt like finding an answer to a problem that didn't exist.  They wanted some type of "playoff" to boost ratings make the season more meaningful.  The way they are doing it this year - at least on paper seems like a better solution.  Last year (an other previous years) in reality you would only have 3 or 4 guys that could actually win it anyway.   They are trying to a) not go up against football (reduced it by 1 tournament) b) get rid of the tournament winner and fedex winner are different people.  (Which I don't think it is a big deal).   Last year Tiger won the tourney but Rose won the fedex cup.   Its the same thing Nascar has , someone will win the last race but someone else is the champ.  At least this way is a "winner take all" approach.   Again, not sure why it actually matters,  its not rewarding someone who had a great season, its rewarding the guy who is playing great the last 2 weeks

Seems like it.
You don't get the "bonus for winning"  - you get the bonus where you finish in the top 30.    Winning put Thomas in the top of the rankings (although wining a playoff event is worth more points than winning a regular season event)  Thomas winnign put is point total higher than anyone else.

Thomas earned 2000 points - Koepka only earned 139.   Thomas ended up 300 points ahead of Koepka.    Koepka ends in the top 10 he is the #1
