I have 3 lenses and I use them all for HDR, I adjust depending on the scene .. I have 3 lenses:1) Sigma 10-20mm for landscapes, scenery, buildings2) Nikkor 18-105mm VR for all purpose walk around snapshotting3) Nikkor 70-300mm VR animals, closeups, etc. anything that needs zooming and a blurred backgroundI also have 2 SB-600 flashes and an SB-900 I usually take 1 photo of the scene, and turn that into an HDR, but lately I get better HDR's if I lug around the tripod and get 3-5 exposures..I use photomatix and photoshop for turning my RAW images into HDR .. photomatix is by far the best, and I've tried them all.. the big secret for me to get great hdr's is a photoshop plugin called "imagenomic noiseware professional", this takes all my noise out and really pops the final image.. I also like "nik color efex pro" , another photoshop plugin that has all kinds of cool post processing features..

Just checking to see if there are any other photogs around.. What equipment are you shooting with? I predominately do HDR style with a Nikon D90..

I'm just getting started learning photoshop. If it works out, I'm going to get a higher end camera. How do you get those cartoon results? Is that done with camera settings, or "post production" on your computer? They're really cool shots.

Bryan Peterson who wrote Understanding Exposure uses Photomatrix. He plugged it when I took his class. I will have to get it. I can pop down 100 bucks quicker then 600 for photoshop

Canon Rebel XTi

mostly use Canon 18-200mm VR, sometimes 50mm 1.8.

Predominantly taking pictures of my kids.

I use Picasa for photo organizing, light editing and sharing online.

I spent $40 on Photoshop Elements 8 and use that for more advance editing. Only a couple of features from Photoshop 6 that I miss. I've been trying to get grunge effect going and still need more work on this.

I'm not nearly as good as a lot of guys around here, but I enjoy photography. I'm still shooting with my trusty Nikon D50 using either a Nikkor 18-55mm, Nikkor 70-300mm VR, or Nikkor 35mm 1.8.

Now that I have a little boy, he's become my main subject. But the rest of my stuff is on my Flickr page, link in my sig.

I've been using a Canon XSi for the past couple years but have my sights set on the 5D mkII. I'd have to upgrade to all new lenses for it so I haven't been able to make the move yet. Soon, my precious... soon.

So what's the learning curve on Photomatix? How long does it take to learn how to do HDR? I think I'd like to try that.

Pretty easy to get started, the default settings work well for most images. A quick google search will give you some walk-throughs that go into detail about all the custom settings you can tweak. As usual, the better the images you start with the better your results will be.

agreed! also, photomatix is generally pretty easy, the finished product is just a matter of personal taste..

Great, thanks. Looks like they have a free trial, so no cost to give it a shot.

if you are going to use photomatix, just make sure to set your camera to shoot in .NEF (RAW) files, as opposed to JPEG files.. alot of the SLR's now a days have a setting to where you can shoot in both modes (NEF + JPG).. and you want to load your .NEF file into photomatix . show us some of your test shots.

Thanks. I only shoot in RAW.

I shoot with a Canon 40D

My lenses right now are:

Canon 18-55is

Canon 55-250is

Sigma 105 2.8 Macro lens (sweet)

I shoot with a Nikon D80. I am seriously considering upgrading my camera soon but can't decide if I should plunk down the coin for a D700 or the more reasonable D300S. I really want the D700 for the ability to shoot at really high ISOs with little noise but the price tag is more than what I would like to spend.

My lenses are:

50 MM 1.4

24 MM 2.8

18-135 MM

70-300 VR

I have been planning to buy photomatrix for a while, I want to do HDR. Not sure why I haven't yet, perhaps I will soon.

If your willing to wait a tad bit longer.. 2 months or so..there are going to be some more cameras released by Nikon.. the upgarde to the D90 is about to release.. when these other cameras come out, the price will drop on the D700 and D300s.. also, they might even release camera upgrades to those two as well.. I used to have a D80, I loved it.. upgraded to the 90 for the better noise/low light settings.. If you sell your D80 lemme know, my brother is looking for a D80 currently.

Add my name to the list although I don't have a ton of stuff to show. I've been mainly focusing on kids and family portraits. I really need to start shooting some stuff around me, I've been meaning to but you know how that is. I do have a list of stuff I've seen while driving around town that I want to go back and shoot once I find some time.

My gear:

Canon T1i

Canon 50mm f/1.8

Canon 75-300 IS

Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 (Non VC) - This lens lives on my camera

Sigma 50-150 f/2.8

You really need to upgrade from the 18-55 to the 17-55 to get the most out of that 7D. The difference is remarkable.

It's on my short list to get. Probably after possibly getting a 100-400 L. I need to get a flash as well. This hobby is sure hard on the wallet.

I thought this was cool.

Richard Loeb (left), 18, and Nathan Leopold Jr., 19, after confessing to the murder of 14-year-old Robert “Bobby” Franks, Chicago, 1924. Both went to Stateville Prison in Joliet, Ill. Loeb was killed in prison in 1936 and Leopold was paroled in 1958.

The photo is from “Gangsters & Grifters,” the Chicago Tribune’s new book, which Erin Mystkowski helped edit. See more from the book on the Tribune’s website, and more from the newspaper’s archives on Instagram: @vintagetribune.

Wife is growing a very nice little side business with her photography. She(we) have the Nikon D5100, D60 and D40. Our 3 main lenses are the Tamron 70-300 (Our original Nikon wore out from thousands of shots and got this for now), the 18-55mm and standard 35mm. She has a macro lens but is still learning to use it. Still have a lot to learn about indoor lighting, and want to get a good flash with a quick response rate for weddings.

Here is her photo site where she posts her galleries: http://dojophoto.smugmug.com/

Bought a Nikon D7100 last year. (convinced my wife we should upgrade her D60 to take the kids graduation pictures). We have the original 18-55. I've added a Sigma 18-200, Nikon 35 1.8, and an old Nikkor 50mm pancake. (doesn't work for with autofocus or metering, but is fun to play around with.

I took the intro to digital photography class a few years ago at the local community college. I would recommend it for someone just starting out. You'll learn a lot of fundamentals, but I also liked the assignments of carrying out photography styles and practices. I wanted to take the second class, but they force you to take 35mm film class as a prerequisite?
