New Orleans Saints final injury report: RB Pierre Thomas is out Sunday

Published: Friday, October 08, 2010, 2:08 PM

Updated: Friday, October 08, 2010, 2:15 PM

Coach Sean Payton delivered his final injury report Friday prior to Sunday's game with the Arizona Cardinals and while it contained few surprises Payton confirmed running back Pierre Thomas will not be active.

Thomas, who suffered an ankle sprain late in the game against Atlanta, has not practiced the past two weeks, While he said his ankle is noticably better, he has not yet run hard on it and his exercises on it thus far have been only on a treadmill or underwater. Were Sunday a playoff game Thomas said he would try to play, but the smart move now is for him to hold off and prepare for Tampa Bay.

Payton said safety Roman Harper (hamstring), defensive end Will Smith (groin), and safety Pierson Prioleau are all questionable. All are making the trip to Phoenix and will be game time decisions. Harper has been listed as limited at practice but seems to be running well and he said he feels ready to go. Prioleau echoed that view for his own involvement and said he has been triple cleared by doctors to play since suffering a severe chest bruise that made breathing difficult in the Panthers game last week.Defensive coordinator Gregg Williams said Smith was part of Friday's red zone drills between the first team offense and defense, the one practice each week that is more or less full speed contact.

Finally, tight end Jeremy Shockey (knee) was limited in practice Friday but Payton listed him as probable for the Cardinals.

Woe is the PT owner. Again. The injury prone tag should have been slapped on this guy already. If I had this guy as my #2, I would have absolutely had startable RB depth ready to go.

man, pure speculation on my part, but that injury and this secrecy makes me leery this guy is even worth rostering anymore.

I hope you're kidding about the rostering...Also, what secrecy? We saw him injure his ankle and that is what they are telling us. He is running on treadmill and underwater and has yet to test it. IIRC, they even said he migh be able to go but want to rest him another week so he can prepare for TB. I don't see any secrect about his ankle at this present time. He missed 2 weeks, which is not uncommon for an ankle injury.

i hadnt heard such reports. by secrecy, i meant, lack of above reports and prognosis.

Haven't scoured the news yet, but has there been anything indicating how carries will be split between Ivory/Betts?

I don't know about the split, but shouldn't the Saints be all over the crappy Cards D pretty much right out of the gate? So with a big lead they're likely to be running a lot vs the #30 d vs the run.

I think both Ivory and Betts would be good plays.

Last week Ivory started but Betts received more touches. Both had double-digit carries but Betts caught four passes. I would expect the split to remain the same this week. Ivory has fumbled two weeks in a row but the coaching staff really likes his talent. Brees has raved about how well Betts has played so he seems a lock to get on the field plenty. The consensus last week was Betts is the better bet in PPR formats while Ivory is the better bet in TD-heavy or standard leagues. That appears to be the consensus again this week as well. Given how awful the Cardinals' defense is, I'd give Ivory a strong chance to score since he's the goal-line RB. I think both Betts and Ivory have RB2 upside this week. I wouldn't hesitate to start either one if I had to.

Actually IIRC Betts was the one out there on the first series, 1st play...

I thought Ivory was but maybe it was just him getting the first rushing attempt. Either way, I don't think it matters much who "starts." Both are going to get plenty of touches.

Betts played in 58 of the 76 snaps last week and had 5 targets catching 4.
He definitely saw a lot more action than Ivory no matter what the stats were.
I like Betts more and I am starting him over Ivory (PPR league) but one thing I'd add is this is a game which could see the Saints playing from the front in the fourth quarter. If that happens, Ivory could be the guy getting the carries since he is a more physical back. Assuming he curbs his fumbling problems he could be in line for some heavy garbage time production.

I'm sure I'm wrong but I thought Ivory was dinged up a bit and with his, well documented, case of "fumbleitis"...I was really leaning towards Betts being the better play...can anyone confirm one way or the other if Ivory is dealing with any kind of injury....

Rated P on ESPN with this commentIvory's banged-up knee is fine and shouldn't be any reason for concern.

I also think Ivory will have a big game, also should this game get out of control Ivory's #s go up and they rest Betts.

Just a hunch but I wonder if Bush will be ready to play before PT is. Right now if you are sold on playing a RB against the Cardnals defense I would go with Chris Ivory.

I am starting Betts in a PPR but I have a "feeling" Ivory is going to have a big game.
I could see him getting 60+ yards and a TD with Betts getting 70+ total yards and 3-5 receptions with a reasonable chance to get a touchdown of his own. I think both guys are looking real good this week. Arizona's defense is terrible.

I don't think people are paying enough attention to the comments of Brees and Peyton.Payton said. "There's a calm, veteran presence to him. He's confident. He inspired us to some degree, especially with that play on the sideline."New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees(notes) says you can't put a number on the value of Ladell Betts(notes). "He was awesome," Brees said. While Ivory fumbled for the second time this season — something Payton said was a significant concern Unless Betts gets hurt or lays an egg ... I would say at least 60/40 probably more like 70/30 in Betts favor

I agree the team really likes Betts and because of that he's a lock to be on the field plenty and get plenty of touches as he did last week. Ivory, though, is a talent and the Saints like what he can provide. If he curbs the fumbling problem and the Saints have a lead in the fourth I could see him putting up some nice fourth-quarter numbers. He comes with more risk because if he fumbles again all bets could be off. But there is definitely some upside with him so if I wouldn't be afraid to start him this week though I agree Betts is going to get plenty of touches no matter what.

the saints will probably throw almost every down until they get a big lead...then run the clock out...so you have to figure they want the best pass blocking RB of the 2 and the guy who can catch if need be ...then the guy who can run out the clock without turning the ball over...gotta go with betts

That may not take long. What is the ceiling on AZ scoring this week? 14 points?

Pierre coulda shined w/ bush out but an owie lets Betts work into the mix. If it isn't a HAP I can't see how an ankle roll would have him laid up 2 weeks unless he is a wuss. With the meds they have today an ankle roll is nothing.

Pierre Thomas-RB- Saints Oct. 8 - 8:59 pm et

Saints coach Sean Payton insisted Friday that Pierre Thomas (ankle, out) doesn't have a high ankle sprain.

"It's not a high ankle sprain, said Payton. "The only thing I commented on was that it wasn't that. It was more of a typical sprain. It's looking a lot better. He's feeling a lot better. He's doing some light jogging, all those things. I think he's going to have a good shot at playing next week."

Ladell Betts is an older version of PT. Similar skill set and will fit the similar role nicely.

Ivory is a pounder with a sore knee. If the knee flares up or Ivory put the ball on the ground again, expect Betts to have a huge days until either PT or Reggie come back.

That's definitely a risk right there. If Ivory coughs it up once, he may not see the field again. It may also be a presumption that the Saints will blow the Cards out of the water, leading to some garbage time production by Ivory. By all accounts, the Saints should have blown the Panthers out last week, and it didn't happen. You never know.

Seems like Betts is a much safer play this week.

^^ What he said. Assuming a game is gonna be a blow-out is an iffy proposition, especially when you're picking the road team.

Agreed. But the Cardinals stink and I'm not sure Hall is going to help them offensively. I realize the same could have been said last week with Carolina/Claussen but that was a division game and the Panthers typically play well against the Saints. I understand it's a risk to presume GTP which is one reason why I think Betts is the superior play. But I do think the Saints will be able to play from the front in this game and that potentially gives Ivory a chance in the fourth quarter. So if you needed to start him I think he's viable for that reason as well as the fact he seems to be a lock for double-digit carries regardless of how the game goes and he's the leading contender for goal-line touches.

If you saw the injury, it wouldn't be that big of a secret. It was a high ankle sprain. Payton actually said he doesn't have a HAS, but that's bull####. They keep pretending there is a chance he might play, more bull####. I posted it in another thread, but when I saw the injury, my initial though was he is gone at least a month, so it wouldn't be too surprising to see him miss week 6 too.

Did you see the play?

Saints signed RB Julius Jones, formerly of the Seahawks. So I am guess Thomas being out for a while is true.
That's what I'm wondering too. I don't know why you'd sign Jones if Thomas was coming back this week.
Unless there is some glaring weakness that they see in Betts. I mean, they cut the guy once for a reason. Maybe they just felt Jones is an upgrade over Betts even with a healthy PT. Just a thought...

Betts did have a vary costly fumble, but before that he looked like the most complete back playing for them. has anyone heard who they cut?

 How the mighty have fallen. Stooping to Julius Jones levels. The guy is worthless.
I'm not sure a lot of RBs would succeed in Seattle the past couple years. OL play has been terrible and the front office has made some brilliant moves like dumping a ton of money into TJ Housh, trading a 1st for Branch, not saying Jones is a world beater by any stretch but this is a guy that has actually produced a few start worthy games the past 2-3 years on his resume. New Orleans has a lot more talent to surround him with than Seattle. I'll also say this, if Jones were starting for the Saints this weekend I would think about playing him in a best ball league, no doubt about it. The other issue is one I think I already posted about and that is Thomas had a significant injury, the coaches are downplaying it which they must after Bush went down, and when guys cannot suit up on Sunday meaning inactive, how much better do things really get over the next 5-6 days? Usually they are not going to be 100% the following Sunday. I posted Thomas was likely 2-3 weeks out when he missed last Sunday and I would guess that timeline is still close to true. Owners are left thinking every week they only need to gut it out 1 more week and then Thomas will be 100% ready to go and that just has not been the case.

if that were true they wouldnt have signed julius jones. im guessing its 6-season at this point.
