Pittsburgh Vs Chicago (1 Viewer)

Having seen the Bears defense, the Steelers' injury problems on their O-line, the Bears' struggles to move the ball on offense and and most of all their laughable attempts to field punts lately, this might actually be that mythical game where for the home team their most effective strategy would be to punt on first down, and I'm only half-joking.

I'm a Pats fan, but I'm bummed that the Steelers/Bears game is on at the same time as the Pats game because I want to see the Steelers/Bears game more than the Pats game. This has the potential to be one HELL of a game!I guess I'm not a real Pats fan??? ;)

that's about right for a Pats fan

This game will come down to turnovers. Big Ben is not going to just lob his passes up in the air like Favre did last week. The Steelers will not turn the ball over, and that takes away the Bears only real scoring oppotunities. Orton stinks, he will get picked , and T. Jones will have very little room to run.

Steelers 20 Bears 6
i saw ben lob a few passes around last week vs cincy

Yeah, right...

I'd like to think I'm a football fan.

Its not like the Bears Defense forces Turnovers against everyone and that Big Ben threw 3 INT's last game!T. Jones will have little room...but its funny that we get the Job done against some of the best run defenses in the game....Ravens, Bucs, and Panthers!!!

Not to nitpick because I know that Chicago has a tough D but look at the teams they've played: Redskins, Lions (twice), Bengals, Browns, Vikings, Ravens, Saints, 49ers, Panthers, Bucs and Packers. The only team with a good offense are the Bengals and they lost by 21 points.

You could argue that the Steelers offense ain't all that great and I would agree with you, but in games that Roethlisberger has started they have been held to under 20 pts only once, against a pretty difficult schedule.

Should be an interesting game...
You can only go out and play the teams that are on the schedule. The bears can't just go and play the Colts to prove themselves(altho they shut them down in the Preseason). The Bears have shut down every team they have played.Against the Bengals we committed 6 turnovers and only lost by 17 NOT 21 like how you said. We also held one of the best offenses in the league to 244 yards of total offense and 24 points despite committing 6 turnovers. The Bears had more total yards on offense that game(255) Just so you know!

I guess that Carolina's offense isn't any good? And it was 17 to Cinci, not 21.Bro...you really like to fudge the facts to make them fit your point, don't you? :P

Bears fans have had to go through these dumb discussions for the past 4-6 weeks. Every week is a new team and a new city of haters and non-believers.... they couldn't beat Carolina's explosive offense, they couldn't beat Tampa on the road, they couldn't beat Favre at home, blah blah blah blah blah......8 in a row...blah blah blah blah....

Sorry, 17 not 21 (like it really matters).I understand the Bears can only play the teams on their schedule, I am just pointing out that most of the offenses they have faced weren't exactly powerhouses.

I think the Bears probably have the best defense in the NFL, but it certainly helps when you get to play a schedule filled with weak offenses. That's all I am saying.

:lmao: at the comment about shutting down the Colts in preseason!

Lets see I was right in all of my comments(and you agreed with me) oh and also...if you would actually watch football in the preseason....you would've seen that the bears did shut them down...and you knwo what...that is the best offense and all that we can base the best D against the best O...am I wrong? Don't assume if you didn't watch the game....I hate when people post comments without concrete facts.

I told all my friends and family last week before the Cinci game that if we lost to the Begals, we were not getting into the playoffs. I still believe that. I hope the Steelers can beat Chi, but I'm not counting on it. I think we loose this game. I also think that Min can easily beat the Steelers in Min and Clev on the road will be no walk in the park. To be honest, I would be happy with a 3-1 split to finish out the year, but I don't think that gets them to the playoffs. I think a more realistic view has them going 2-2 in the last 4.

I agreed with you that the Bears lost to the Bengals by 17 rather than 21. As you said it is a fact. Personally I don't think losing by 17 is much different than losing by 21 but if it makes you feel better then OK.The fact that the Bears can only play the teams on their schedule is obvious so I am not sure why you take so much glee that I agreed with you on that. I am not saying the Bears don't have a great defense -- they do. The point I was trying to make was that any team's defense is going to look better when they play a schedule filled with weak offenses rather than a schedule against better offenses.

What I really don't understand is why you think preseason results mean anything at all. Teams don't play their starters the whole way through and they only use a small portion of their playbook. Buffalo shut down Indy in preseason too, actually held them to less points than the Bears, so what?

Here is a concrete fact for you: The Colts were 0-5 in preseason and are 12-0 in the real season. What happens in preseason means next to nothing...

Again, the Cinci game was a looooooong time ago. That was a different team. They've since gone NUTS.

The fact about preseason is when the bears #1 D was out there and teh Colts #1 O was out there we shut them down. I know they don't play the entire game...nor do they impliment the whole playbook during preseason....however, it is the same for the defense and when we played them we shut them down. You are wrong about preseason however, it does count for something. Teams that win show that they have some very good depth behind there starters. Now haven't we swayed away from the original topic in that you are going to cry on sunday when Big Ben gets hurt again!

Yep that 3-1 record the Jets posted in the preseason sure proved how deep they were. And the 0-5 Colts are in real trouble because of their lack of depth... As far as your other comment goes: I think hurting the Steelers QB would be a good strategy for the Bears to win. The funny thing is, it is probably in the best interest of the Steelers to NOT hurt the Bears starting QB.

Why are we talking about rooting for injuries? This is pretty close...

Being a Steelers fan I don't think I was the one rooting for Ben's injury.

Sadly, my Steelers season is essentially over, and the Bears should win a close one.  :towelwave:
Why do you say that? If the Steelers can beat the Bears they'll be in 8-5 and have to face Minnesota, Cleveland and Detroit. 11-5 is not beyond the realm of possibility and that should be enough to make it as a wildcard. I am pretty sure that no 11-5 team has missed the playoffs for over 20 years.Of course they have to beat the Bears first, which won't be easy, but I definitely would not say the Steelers season is over quite yet...
Right now Steelers are behind SD, KC, and Jax in the wild card hunt. Jax has the tie-breaker on us beacuse of Tommy Maddox. Even if we run the table Steelers need much help. Bengals game really was a must win IMO.

I agree, and there is little chance we run the table IMO.

Not really. The Steelers win out, they'll get in. They won't catch the Jags, but it's not a stretch for them to pass up SD and KC if they win their final 4 games. Not saying they will, but if they do...They'd need KC to lose 2 of 4, which isn't a tall order considering their schedule, and SD to lose once. I think the Steelers get screwed if it's a 3-way tie, but head to head, they have the tie breaker on SD.

I'm pretty sure KC and SD still play each other, which will give one of them a loss.I'm in the same baot as jurb. I certainly do not like Pgh's playoff chances at this point. That cinci loss was huge.

Plus SD plays Denver the last game of the season. SD easily had the hardest schedule in the league.

No, that would be the Chiefs - @Cowboys, @Giants, Chargers, and Bengals. The Chargers should beat the Dolphins, will probably lose to the Colts and have a decent shot at winning in KC and beating the Broncos at home to go 3-1 and at least get a wild card, if not the AFC West title.

I'm still optimistic. I think they can win out, I really do. This isn't just the homer in me talking - I think they'll be favored in every game the play the rest of the way.

This will get bumped.
Sure will. No turnovers and the Pgh wins 21-9. good call ArticEdge.

Just shows how much tougher the AFC is... Chicago just got punched in the face!! :towelwave:

I just wish Steelers would have shown up LAST week. I was impressed today, but am not optimistic. (just hopeful as I got dibs on the family playoff tickets because the only reg. season game I went to was the Ravens)

The game that will cost them (assuming they win out and 11 wins isn't enough) is Baltimore. Sweet Mary mother of all that's holy, that was a pitiful performance by Tommy MadSux

That one hurt, but considering they might wind up with equal records the OT loss to the Jags might be the one that costs them.

I think it is safe to say that the Bears #1 defense is largely because they have played a schedule with less-than-stellar offenses. The Bears defense was owned today. They might have an impressive record but the Bears smell.

If they win out, I feel very confident saying we'll grab a WC spot. We still could do it with a 10-6 although thats not something I'd want to bank on. Today certainly swung things in our favor, as compared to last week. We get a win, KC and SD both lose...SO right now,

We've got Div Leaders of:

Indy 13-0

Cinci 10-3

Denver 10-3

New England 8-5

Then, Wilcard teams:

Jacksonville 9-4

Pittsburgh 8-5

San Diego 8-5

Kansas City 8-5

We have the tie breaker with SD, not sure about with KC.

But, remaining schedules certainly look good:

JAX: SF, @HOU, TEN -- they can pretty much start making their postseason travel plans now. Virtual Lock to go with a game lead and that schedule.

KC: @NYG, SD, CIN -- how many of them can they win? That's three playoff calibre teams.

SD: @IND, @KC, DEN --- pretty much the same deal. 3 VERY tough games.

PIT: @MIN, @CLE, DET -- Tough to say they'll win all three, but on paper they've got to be favored in every of these games.

So, KC and SD play each other, so barring a tie, one of them will have 6 loses at best. We still have a ways to go but beating Chicago and haveing SD and KC both lose was a HUGE step in the right direction today. :towelwave:

You're right -- it did. Zero Steelers thurnovers. :towelwave:

The game that will cost them (assuming they win out and  11 wins isn't enough) is Baltimore. Sweet Mary mother of all that's holy, that was a pitiful performance by Tommy MadSux

:towelwave:
I heard yesterday that right now, the Steelers have the tiebreaker over SD and KC. If the playoffs began today, Steelers would be in with the 6th seed. Things are not grim at all. If we win out, we are guaranteed a spot. If we lose 1 game, we can still get in provided :1) The loss doesn't come to Cleveland, as another AFC loss may cost us a tiebreaker.

2) The winner of the KC/SD game loses one of its other 3 games.

I'd say the odds are better than 50/50 at this point. A win over Minnesota next week would be huge, as I don't fear Cleveland or Detroit to end the season.

Edit to add : Steelers hold the tiebreaker right now between the 3 teams. A 3-way tie between SD, KC, and Pittsburgh would result in the Steelers getting in. A two-way tie with SD would result in the Steelers getting in. A 2-way tie with KC would result in the Chiefs getting in.

This game will come down to turnovers. Big Ben is not going to just lob his passes up in the air like Favre did last week. The Steelers will not turn the ball over, and that takes away the Bears only real scoring oppotunities. Orton stinks, he will get picked , and T. Jones will have very little room to run.

You are correct about not being guaranteed a spot. KC could win out and take it. Doesn't seem likely though with their schedule.

Was at this game....basically right on the field. 3 rows behind Steelers bench, 45 yd line. Not too impressed with Pitt. Bears D played very sloppy, missing tons of easy tackles, going for big hits instead of wrapping up. Very disappointing effort out of the D. No pressure on Ben, but thats a credit to the Pitt o-line.Steeler fans had a great time, really whoopin it up all day. Just disappointed that they didnt get to see the best the Bears have got

Wow, glad there aren't any sour grapes...you should be a coach if it was as simple as them going for big hits and not wrapping up. I would have thought these guys were professional athletes and would know better. Since you were so close to the field, you should have passed a note to Lovie and shown him the error in his ways.I'm sure it wasn't that the defense played their normal game, but couldn't stop the Steelers, right? That would be impossible.

My Bears = PWN3D. For a day, at least. I think that was the wake up call the Bears needed, though you HATE to ever need that. Changes on offense are needed. We NEED our safeties healthy, Mike Brown especially... and our two-game streak of bad D-line needs to stop. Finally, it's all somewhat hopeless IMO as long as Orton is behind center... he just isn't the answer.

I think it needs to be said that the much maligned Trai Essex and Max Starks did a whale of a job in pass protection yesterday. Against a line as vaunted for its ability to pressure the QB as Chicago's is, Brown and Ogunleye were completely neutralized by Essex and Starks. I think at one point late in the game, they showed a graphic that said Roethlisberger not only hadn't been sacked, but was only hit once and rushed once or twice. That's absolutely HUGE, and those two tackles deserve a TON of credit for that. With time to throw, Ben was picking the secondary apart, which softened the defense up, allowing the Steelers to rush for about 200 yards.Kudos also to Ken Whisenhunt, who I thought did a phenomenal job in playcalling yesterday.

Thats exactly the 1 positive I was taking out of that game

Wisenhunt called a great game. Early use of screens kept the pressure off Essex and Starks in pass protection, but I agree, much better game by both.

They didnt even come close to their "normal game"
No pressure on the QB = time for receivers to get open = Roethlisberger killing the Bears downfield = dropping too many guys back into coverage = softened run defense = death against the Steelers when trailing in the second half. It's really that simple. Essex and Starks did a great job and the Steelers just played with more energy and passion. The Ward TD and the Bettis 5-yarder were perfect examples of plays where Steeler players were just running over the Bears defenders.

Starks is a freakin monster. He was just swallowing his man whole, all day

Starks, in particular, I thought was awesome. I was watching him much of the game, and he was shoving people all over the place. I thought he'd get gobbled up by their speed on the ends, but he played a great game.Whisenhunt wisely saw when the middle blitzes were coming - the screen calls he made seemed to always be at the exact right moment, and were incredibly effective. I'd have given him a game ball yesterday.
