Pokemon Go (1 Viewer)

On my way into work, I swing by a a run of pokestops, it seemed to me a little harder to collect while driving.   :bag:   Maybe that's a good thing.
My son will tap the stop just before it's in range. Seems to work well up to 40 MPH or so.

My son has used it plenty of times in a car going way over 20mph. Was there a change with last night's update?
You can "play",  but you won't get any credit for distance traveled (for hatching eggs).  Also, the odds of you finding any pokemon in the wild is roughly 0% going that fast.

True regarding the eggs but not true regarding finding Pokemon--at least before the update. I don't know if that's changed since last night. He's caught hundreds of Pokemon in the last several weeks in the 3000 miles of driving my we've done. Above 65 mph, it's possible but difficult to catch them but below 65, it gets progressively easier as you get closer to 20.

Just saying you'd have caught far, far more had you walked that exact same distance.  Currently the game "pings" your location every 10 seconds.  If anything is within range of you when it pings, the creature shows up on the game.  At 60 mph, you go 880 ft in those 10 seconds (roughly 3 football fields).

Yep I catch em all the time on the road. I generally just hit stops while driving (phone mounted to dash, just reach out for quick flip of the screen. If i'm at a red light or in stop/go traffic (which is a lot of my driving during AM commute) I'll occasionally attempt to catch something but usually ignore spawns unless I'm stopped or nearly stopped. If it's something big I'll occasionally tap it and then pull off the road to pull it in.

  @ the thought of walking 3000 miles in a few weeks.

Sure you miss many that you'd see if you walked, but you also get many more that you'd miss if you walked over the same time period.  So overall, it averages out in terms of seeing them. The yield is lower though.

Not sure what's going on here.  I downloaded the update this AM and I'm at an amusement park with several poke stops.....  I haven't had one sighting in 2 hours.   The stops work but no Pokemon to be found....

I wonder if the update made changes to the amount of Pokemon rendered by pokestops

Try restarting the game.

I noticed driving downtown this morning, where I can usually hit 8-9 Pokestops because it is always stop and go getting into my parking garage, that the Pokestop would Appear and spin, but the picture would be blank and no balls would come out.

If that indeed is a deterrent feature to stop playing and driving, that's fine, but it sort of sucks for passengers who might want to play.

Probably was just frozen

I walked probably 20 miles on a recent trip and this thing registered like 3km. Do you have to be actively playing the game while walking?

They should integrate it with the built in pedometer on most phones...mire accurate.

app has to be open, yes

It is GPS based, not steps based.

I leave the game open and phone in pocket with screen dim/sound off when I'm just walking. Check the phone every block or so to make sure I didn't close out of the game, or see if a pokemon appeared.

Update... 4 hours 2.5 Km zero sightings.  Have opened and closed and #### off the phone completely and rebooted..... Nothing

picked up a ton of experience and balls though.

I can't believe your game is acting correctly.

Just caught a 800-something CP Charmeleon at my desk.

I think the problem is you're walking around. Sit still. Laziness > Effort IMO.

I've been sitting here for 3 hours with it open and only found a 246 polliwag.   :sadbanana:

Can't imagine how easy this game must be to play when you're in a big city. My little dinky NJ suburb has like 5 pokestops within 1/2 a mile or so (I've been taking a slightly different route home from work so I can hit 3 of them at the traffic lights:bag:) so I'm not totally screwed.

But then this afternoon I drove through another town with more of a main street type of area. There were like 25 stops visible at one point when I stopped at a light. Just ridiculous.

Maybe this is pokemon 101, but are pokemon more plentiful around pokestops? The main difference between urban and rural locations is the number of stops. Without the stops, how does the game determine how the pokemon are distributed/spawn/nest etc.?

I'm talking more about getting supplies, but in my experience yes. When I get to the corner near my house that has 2 stops, something almost always spawns. Its usually something lousy like a weedle, but its pretty consistent.

Stopped to pick up Food at a shopping center last night. Didn't even have a stop, but the second I pulled up SIX pokemon spawned.

Hard to tell for me. I have a gym and 2 Pokestops across the street from my office. I see a Pokemon spawn every hour at about 10 minutes past the hour while sitting at my desk.

At home we have a cemetery across the street from us that has dozens of Pokestops and 4 gyms. I almost never see a Pokemon spawn while I'm in my house unless I use incense. And when I walk around the cemetery hitting Pokestops I've never seen a Pokemon spawn.

:loco:

End of day update.... At least 30 something pokestops swipes, 3 miles walked zero sightings....

something is is definately wrong with my update.

Ok - went out for dinner at a brewery down the road.   Plenty of beer, plenty of Pokemon.

wonder if a location can "turn off" spawning.

Yeah I have 8 pokestops within a couple blocks of my home. It's very easy for me to restock my supplies if I'm running low. I question whether I would still be playing if I lived in a different area. It has to be extremely frustrating if you run out of balls and don't have an easy way to get more.

I wonder how far you could get only hatching eggs and never catching stuff. If you bought incubators I think you could progress pretty quickly.

does pokevision or any similar app work?
I posted above that there is a website you Can put into your mobile browser that works (or has worked recently): fastpokemap.com - it has been working okay on my iPhone but has worked really good with my iPad. Their Twitter account said this AM that Niantic made some changes to try and thwart the site but I noticed it is working still - I live in suburbs for those of you fellow rural players.

In a situation like this, you could probably not let them have their phones.
Fair.  But the more important angle would be from the park owner.   If I own the park I don't want kids playing Go when they could be throwing down $2 a wack to play one of the carnie trash games.

i can't say for sure but the second we left the park pokes started showing up again.  I take that to mean they called and had them shut off.

I don't think they can turn off spawning in an area... but some areas are conspicuously "dry"

Just got a snorlax..... popped up on "nearby" and I got excited. Showed up on my screen... more excited. Clicked on him and entered "catch mode" and saw the CP...... 135.

Damn Bi+ch-### Snorlax :hot:

Working from home today and a 2051 Dragonite spawned right outside my house!! It's a normal spawn spot for common Pokemon but I have seen the occasional rare spawn (Onix, Squirtle, Koffing). Threw about 10 Razz and 15 Ultras before he ran away. I guess it's back to Dratini farming for me.
