Did a significant number of people actually object to these, or is this one of those viral fake-outrage stories?
Not sure. Twitter was hot about it but it's also Twitter. On other hand, some of the strong negative comments got something like 120,000 "likes". FWIW.

People seemed pretty upset when Nike did it.
Yes, it's pretty much the same as the Nike situation.  Free market capitalism means that Macy's and Nike can choose not to sell this particular product.  Also, people are free to have an opinion about whether those products should or shouldn't be stocked.

"I fight the people who profit from your shame"??    Seems like this lady would be all about looking for stuff to get likes and shares.

Twitter is awful.  3rd post down somebody posting that the plates perpetuate eating disorders - how exactly do they do that?  Just seems like a lot of social media is a race to the bottom as people just try to post outrageous stuff for clicks, shares, and reactions.

family member dealing with an eating disorder  it doesn't help her mental health.  still voted not smart.

I don't care about any of this.  I don't care that Macy's carried the plates.  I don't care that they stopped selling them.  I don't care that some people complained about the fat-shaming on social meeting.  And, finally, I don't care that other people are criticizing the people who felt shamed or criticized Macy's for pulling the plates.

I don't see it as fat shaming really.  I think where they missed the mark is calling "mom" jeans which indicates it is mom's that get fat.

I think most of you (us) are missing the point.  I took a look at the Twitters. It seems most of the outrage was not about the "moms jean" part, but rather about the small portion for the "skinny jeans", and how this type of stuff perpetuates eating disorders among young women.

True.  And I imagine that there wouldn't be quite the uproar if instead of a dinner plate, they simply did the same thing with a dessert plate.

Isn’t it a fair observation about the absurdly oversized food portions in the U.S.?  I think it’s not unreasonable to educate our children (frail as we all seem to think they are) about appropriate portion sizing.

On my train commute home yesterday I noted that literally every single woman in my car was overweight to the point that their rears could not fit in a single seat. They were all spilling over into the seat next to them, making it so uncomfortable for everyone to sit in the row. Some of them took up 1.5 seats or even two. This has become the norm.  We are quite literally eating ourselves to death.

FYI, we have all of Europe and Japan to look to if we are curious to know what a healthy person and healthy-sized portions look like. If you spend any appreciable time in Japan, for example, you realize that Americans are perceived as giant fat slobs. And probably for good reason. Our eating culture is a mess.

I have to say, the food portions are getting a bit out of hand. I guess restaurants have to do this to keep up? We went out for a birthday last week and I got the chicken parm. While I have a good appetite, this was easily enough for 3 people. I mean it was just a stupid sized portion. Then it came with spaghetti and bread and salad and by the time I got done it was just insane. I took the rest home but never finished it. Waste.

I used to date a Russian woman.  Her mom came over from Russia to visit.  It was Mom’s first time in America.  We went out to eat and when her entree arrived she legitimately thought it was a family-sized portion meant to be shared with the entire table.  It was befuddling to her, and a cause of much laughter for her daughter.

I think the problem with twitter (and other forms of social media but especially twitter) is that it puts a magnifying glass on the biggest crackpots and makes it look like there are more of those folks than there really are.  This is a platform that encourages people to dunk on idiots, so when somebody posts about how offended they are by plates, Black Ariel, or whatever next week's stupid controversy will be, they take up a lot more mindshare than their numbers would otherwise deserve.  It's either sort of like the availability heuristic or literally exactly the availability heuristic (I can't quite decide).

Yup.  Take a look at any restaurant you go to that indicates the calories in the meals.  Heck, Chili's.  So many of these meals are like 1,500+ calories.  That's an insane number of calories for one meal -- it's probably what most of us should be having in an entire day.

Totally out of whack.
