I'm pretty sure that's a yesI have a question for everyone here who has suffered a similar injury and had lengthy recovery times. Are you a world-class athlete with access to great doctors and rehab equipment 24/7?
Judging by some of the posts in here where people are rooting for other top RB to get hurt because they didn't take precautions...I would say its not as obvious as you think...also the "Big Guy" sent an email talking about picking up betts so can we dial down the tool factor a bit...thanks!This concludes the "most obvious statement of the day" portion of our program.I just want to highlight something Pasquino wrote in his prime numbers drafting article. Jeff did a blurb about getting the back up RB around the 11th round as insurance for all those high 1st round picks.I think Betts is a good handcuff for Portis. I picked him up in the 13th of my draft. While I am not happy with what happened to Portis, I also think Betts will succeed should he have to start for any length of time too. Important when you draft to sometimes think about who the back up is tooHad the exact same thought...

I had a seperated should before, though I have no idea what level it was. Basically, it hurt like hell for a week and was hard to move. Then I started treatment and it got better in about a month. I have absolutly no lingering effects from it. This was w/o the training you speak of. Take it for what its worth I guess.I have a question for everyone here who has suffered a similar injury and had lengthy recovery times. Are you a world-class athlete with access to great doctors and rehab equipment 24/7?
This sucks.

That's my guess too, but Betts is going to fly up draft boards and be a pricy handcuff at this point.actually, this isn't terrible timing. he's got three weeks to rehab this thing and get ready for the season. the only problem is, no one will know definitively how the shoulder is doing till week one when he takes that first hit, but i'm guessing right now he should be fine.
There may be. Again, separated shoulders and subluxed/dislocated shoulders are totally separate injuries. A separated shoulder is an injury to the AC joint which is above and outside the shoulder joint where the shoulderblade and collarbone come together.I'm no doctor, but I think this reporter might be making the surgery part up. Unlike a seperated shoulder, where ligaments get stretched or even torn, there's nothing to operate on for a partial dislocation is there? After leaving the field under his own power, Portis underwent X-Rays and an MRI. The results showed no fractures, however, they did reveal that Portis had suffered a subluxation, or partial dislocation of his shoulder. Doctors were able to pop it back into place, and Portis returned to the sideline with his arm in a sling.
Surgery is a possibility if the shoulder does not respond well to rest and rehab.
true.another issue is they may cut his workload the first couple weeks to ease him back in, something they would be comfortable in doing if they really like Betts as much as they claim.
You might be right about passing less but when he lowers his shoulder to run someone over how is that going to feel? Portis seems to take a lot more direct hits than a guy like Alexander who has a knack for make people slide off him when the tackle him.I'm thinking that Portis would probably pass less than Bulger . . .FWIW, Marc Bulger's injured shoulder last year had negative X-rays too. Then the MRI came and Bulger was diagnosed with a shoulder sprain. He was out for about 4 weeks and then hurt it again. He later decided to rest it and go on IR for the remaining few weeks of the season.I'm just sayin...
I agree. If anything, I think this situation is going to give us a watered down RBBC in Washington. Not really great news for Portis or Betts.true.another issue is they may cut his workload the first couple weeks to ease him back in, something they would be comfortable in doing if they really like Betts as much as they claim. That's my guess too, but Betts is going to fly up draft boards and be a pricy handcuff at this point.actually, this isn't terrible timing. he's got three weeks to rehab this thing and get ready for the season.

I have the unfortunate situation of owning Portis and having shoulder issues. I've separated my right shoulder twice from waterskiing and torn the labrum in that shoulder now twice from throwing sports (most recently last week). Our draft is Saturday so I chose to let him walk and chose to keep a better valued Heap. Shoulder problems suck!I had a seperated should before, though I have no idea what level it was. Seriously? You're keeping Heap over Portis? It is a keeper league with inflation. I drafted LJ at $27 last year to handcuff Priest so that is a nice windfall for this year. Given that, I was able to trade for Portis who was drafted at $107 last year thinking I could afford this because while Portis was overpriced, LJ was very underpriced. Now, if I had kept Portis, I am looking at spending another 25-30 (comparing to what I paid for LJ last year) to get Betts putting $167 into 3 RB slots. Since I also have to handcuff LJ with someone, factor in another $5-10 and now I'm sitting at $175 on 4 spots with only $85 left for 11 more spots including a starting QB, 2 WR, TE, K, D. Heap was at $26 and given our current prices and our scoring system, the draft dominator gave Heap a $44 value in my league at draft day.dgreen said:Knightro said:Our draft is Saturday so I chose to let him walk and chose to keep a better valued Heap.Seriously? They said that CIN was the only team with a MRI in their stadium. Pretty cool.what i don't get is espn said last night that MRI results revealed the partial dislocation, yet the MRI is scheduled for this morning![]()

Cowboys fans won't mind if he misses week 2.I just finished my draft. I got the 5th pick and took Portis. I wasn't able to get Betts though which has me a little worried. I don't care too much if he misses the first week or 2 of the season, as long as he's good to go after that. I draft for the playoffs, not week 1.

For redraft I've had him and Tiki tied for 4. Before last night I expected a bump from him and a slight downgrade for Tiki, but depending on reports he might have just dropped to 5. Can't really downgrade him any further than that unless the news suggests he will miss extended time, or that it might be something that affects him all season.Back to question posed earlier -- Portis still #4 after big 3?

with the technology in recovery i would venture to say it would be on the earlier side, like week 1-3not the first time i have brought this equipment up but..According to the email it's a partial dislocation, and I didn't like the part about the shoulder taking a lot of time to fully heal and be vulnerable from then on.
I think a bigger problem for Portis owners is that if Betts is forced to carry the load to open the season, and he does well, which I think we can reasonably expect, ther Skins are not going to be in a big hurry to rush Portis's recovery to get him back on the field. If it is one of those injuries that remain vulnerable unless it receives extended rest, we might not see Portis on the field until week 4 or 5.
Hi ATC,It's not really totally accurate to say it's not a dislocation. (I know this now after talkign to our docs last night) A subluxation is best described as an "almost dislocation". The shoulder does dislocate and then pop back in by itself. It's almost like we're talking about severity or degrees of shoulder separation. Hopefully, we'll know more here soon.JThey play on Monday on Sept. 11th. Exactly 4 weeks away. And it was not a dislocation or a separated shoulder. It was a subluxation, much like Benson. He should be ok as long as he doesn't have repeated shoulder instability. Does anyone know if Portis ever had a similar shoulder problem before, or if there was any damage of the rotator cuff, joint capsule, or souranding ligaments?
Can we see the Al Saunders RBBC now? It does take a while for ligaments to heal if not stretched to far that it would require surgery. The soulder much like the ankle will be more vulnerable for reinjury, but unlike the ankle the ligaments are stronger, less stress is put on the shoulder, and we don't know if the MRI showed any damage. We just heard it was subluxation.According to the email it's a partial dislocation, and I didn't like the part about the shoulder taking a lot of time to fully heal and be vulnerable from then on.I think a bigger problem for Portis owners is that if Betts is forced to carry the load to open the season, and he does well, which I think we can reasonably expect, ther Skins are not going to be in a big hurry to rush Portis's recovery to get him back on the field. I thought a subluxation was a partial dislocation? Did I read that incorrectly? And if it's the same injury as Benson had why would the talk be about 4-6 weeks instead of the 2-3 Benson got? And why would people be ranging as far as "out 2-3 months"? Just hysteria? Seemed like immediately after Benson got hurt people were saying 2-3 weeks, maybe less. They play on Monday on Sept. 11th. You are correct sir. However, because it slipped out and then back in without needing a medical person pop it back in means that there is more likely less damage done to the surrounding tissue. Subluxation is like a first degree of a dislocaton. Will still take some time to heal, but I think pending on the actual results of the MRI and any set back in rehab, he should be fine. May carry less of a load the first couple of weeks back.Hi ATC,It's not really totally accurate to say it's not a dislocation. That's what I don't get either. Maybe it is something they read on the MRI that is different than Benson.I thought a subluxation was a partial dislocation? Did I read that incorrectly? Might be a good idea since nothing has been reported as of right now(1255 eastern time).Larry Michael just finished his show from Redskin park and said they wouldn't know the answer on when Portis would return until later this afternoon. Anybody saying 4-6 weeks is guessing. No such timetable has been reported by the Redskins. They are now saying that he will be "evaluated later in the week".Shouldn't we wait for the MRI before we accept a 4-6 week timeline?Isn't the swelling after something like this too severe to get a good MRI for a few days?
Yes and yes.Washington Times storyShouldn't we wait for the MRI before we accept a 4-6 week timeline?

A partial separation of Clinton Portis' left shoulder will not necessarily keep the Washington Redskins' franchise running back out for the rest of the preseason. But coach Joe Gibbs said, "It's going to be a while before he'll play."
Portis was injured on the eighth play of the Redskins' 19-3 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals last night at Paul Brown Stadium when he tackled Keiwan Ratliff, who had intercepted Mark Brunell. X-rays were negative but an MRI revealed a shoulder subluxation, a temporary and partial separation caused when the ball of the upper arm slips out of the socket.
"Let's get rid of some of these preseason games," said Portis, who was wearing a sling on his arm and laughing during the press conference. "Even the young guys don't need four games. It's ridiculous to play four preseason games and then 16 games and then the playoffs."
Redskins director of sports medicine Bubba Tyer said it will be a couple days before the team knows how long Portis will be out.
A partial dislocation, known as a subluxation, causes the ball in the shoulder joint to slip out, resulting in pain and weakness. Recovery time can vary, and rest, ice, and anti-inflammatory drugs are used to treat the injury; surgery also is an option should the pain persist. Bubba Tyer, the Redskins' director of sports medicine, said an accurate timetable will be impossible to determine for several days, depending on the extent of inflammation, and Portis said the injury felt like a right shoulder injury he suffered in high school, pointing to the scar from that surgery, although this time his shoulder slipped back into place.
