Potential cap casuaties (1 Viewer)

These were just the ones he mentioned on the SportsCenter segment. I'm sure there will be more talk as next week approaches.

LaMont Jordan is owed over 5M in March.

I hope he hits the FA market, on a better team he is a fine fantasy back.

Joey Harrington
He did alright this year. I understand CPep is the QB they want to start, but if Joey is gone, does that leave Ms. Cleo as the backup? (might be worth a pick-up)Also, where will Joey go? I'd love to see him in Houston. :thumbup:More likely to be a backup I would think.

Schlesinger likely finished as a Lion

Mike O'Hara / The Detroit News

ALLEN PARK -- Rod Marinelli is taking a firm stand on who he wants back in his second season as coach of the Lions.

Four veterans have been told to seek trades -- defensive linemen James Hall and Marcus Bell, guard Ross Verba and cornerback Dre Bly.

And, fullback Cory Schlesinger appears finished after 12 seasons with the Lions. There is no plan to re-sign Schlesinger before he becomes a free agent March 2.

Gone: Bly, Bell, Hall, Verba.

"We're going to seek some opportunities right now," Marinelli said. "They also will have that opportunity. It's in the best interest of our team."

Bly was a team leader and voted a captain last season, but his cover skills did not fit the Tampa Two, which requires cornerbacks to be more disciplined and play the run.

Hall and Verba have bonuses due March 1. If they have not been traded by then, they'll be cut.

In limbo: Schlesinger.

His future depends on whether a front-line fullback is added during free agency.

Asked if Schlesinger will return, Marinelli replied: "You hate to say no. You want to leave a little window open. We're going to let the thing play out with Cory. He's been a war-daddy here. That's one lead blocker there."

Schlesinger's role was diminished last year.

Why are the Lions getting rid of arguably their 2nd best defensive player - James Hall? Just $, or is the injury worse than I thought?

Troy P. is not a pending free agent in 2007 and there is less than zero chance of the Steelers cutting him.

That's it?What about Adam Archuletta? What about Corey Dillon?
The Skins cant cut Archuletta because of the massive hit to their cap that they would take. He has a lot of back end money from his signing bonus that would cost the Skins millions in cap space. Thank the Football Gods that he will be a Redskin for a few more seasons and eat away at their cap.As an Eagles fan I LOVE DAN SNYDER !

:goodposting: The Skins don't have a cap. Snyder just turns money owed that would count against the cap into bonus cash that he can spread over 5 or 6 years. It's why the Skins are always up against the cap, but can still do whatever they want during FA

Jamal Lewis- would save Baltimore 8.33 million

Drew Bledsoe

Jake Plummer

Joey Harrington
Everyone keeps saying that he will be cut but I read that he would do nothing for their cap. So I dont see them cutting him plus Denver has no one to back up Cutler.I'll add D. Foster, D. Morgan to the list. Carolina has just 1.6 million in cap room. D.Foster saves gives them 3.3 toward the cap so it seems pretty sure that he is cut along with a few other panthers.

From where I sit...

Lewis - recent talk of restructuring with BAL, but I'm skeptical it'll happen. I think he thinks he's worth more than they think he is, and he'll hit the open market only to learn he was wrong.

Bledsoe - not worth thinking about. His starting days are likely over.

Plummer it seems is destined for Houston. Every article out of Colorado or Texas discussing him seems to see it as a foregone conclusion.

Harrington will scrounge for a #2 job somewhere. He's a bad QB and has no business starting anywhere.

Archuletta isn't going anywhere.

Dillon will I think swallow hard and take a pay cut to stay rather than take a pay cut to leave.

Lamont Jordan isn't going anywhere. He'll be Oakland's starter.

Polamalu leaving? Get serious.

Foster and Morgan aren't going anywhere. If it means restructuring , that's what will happen.

 LOL at other fans thinking they're going to have a chance at Polamalu. Don't you think there would have been just a LITTLE more talk about him being a FA if he really was one?

Analyzing Marinelli: The real reason they'll part with Bly

After taking some time to absorb Rod Marinelli's lengthy interview -- and talking to some folks close to the situation -- here's my take on what's going on with the Lions:

First, poor attitude is part of the reason the Lions are allowing Dre Bly, James Hall and Marcus Bell to seek a trade. I understand Bishopdon's assertion that Bly "isn't a bad guy,'' but Marinelli sees it a little differently. Bly is popular in the lockerroom, guys do like him and he has some leadership skills, but he doesn't provide the "toughness'' leadership Marinelli is looking for -- he's not leading guys in the direction Marinelli wants them headed.

Finances are a part of it and the fact that he doesn't really fit the scheme is part of it, too, but money isn't an issue for good players and it's Bly's lack of toughness in run support that makes him a poor fit in the scheme.

Hall and Bell were both involved in the grievance last off-season, but it's more than that. New head coaches almost always get "grieved'' for early aggressiveness. Hall and Bell were major players in the defensive line strife that hung in the locker room for most of the season. I don't know what happened to Hall. A couple of years ago, he was a hard-nosed player who was determined to make something out of himself, but now he's lost that edge. I contend the Lions and their consistent losing has sapped him of his energy.

With Verba, it's all about finances. The Lions aren't going to pony up $4 million (including a $2.5 million roster bonus in March) for a guy who couldn't stay healthy last season and didn't even play the season before that. It's simply too much of a risk.

It would be folly to believe that Marinelli is willing to jettison starters like Bly and Hall and is just fine with the antics of Damien Woody and Mike Williams. There are two issues here -- both players will be given the opportunity to lose weight, get in line and get their heads straight. That, and the fact that cutting them both after June 1 would be more convenient for the Lions for salary cap reasons.

I believe Woody has a better chance to stay with the club, partly out of necessity and partly because I think it's more realistic to believe he'll see the light and respond. I do have to say that I think the Lions are being unrealistic by keeping Williams' target weight at 220 pounds. I don't think he's been 220 since high school.

I understand that Marinelli doesn't want to compromise, but if you really want the kid to be a productive player, tell him his weight can be 225 -- with the stipulation that if he's still not fast enough, he has to go down to 220. But at least give the kid a fighting chance.

These potential roster moves tell me one very important thing -- Marinelli is trying to build this team the right way, even if it's going to take some time. People who believe that Marinelli -- and, by association, Matt Millen -- must win this season to keep their jobs are kidding themselves.

Trust me, this plan of action was already being plotted during the late stages of the regular season and you have to believe that owner William Clay Ford was in agreement with the stragtegy.

So, when you hear media types talking about how Millen must win seven games or reach the playoffs or whatever to keep his job, it's complete nonsense. I'm not saying that Millen isn't in jeopardy of being fired after this year -- you never know what might happen -- but it won't be because of some pre-determined ultimatum.

The rumor is that James Hall has displayed a poor attitude and isn't giving the same kind of effort that he was two or three years ago.
