If it's proven beyond a doubt that they had some flunkie videotaping on the sidelines:

1) Lose a combination of draft picks, including a 1st day pick.

2) Personal fine for Bill Bellichick, as well as a fine for the organization.

I like the idea of Bellichick having to wear a suit on the sidelines, and they should also burn the sleeves hoodie in a pre-game ceremony. I can see ghosts flying out of that thing when it starts burning up.

Frankly I don't think it's such a huge deal and I'm sure other teams do this stuff, but if the Pats were dumb and/or arrogant enough to get caught they deserve the proper penalties. Especially since Godell seems willing to hand out harsher punishments.

I voted OTHER. In High School and College Football if you cheat, you forfeit...sometimes the whole season. In the pro's you get fined and a piece of pie. Why do we let pro sports get a pass on rules and regulations? It does not send the right signals to our youth who we are telling to play by the rules.

They should lose the game and pay a fine somewhere near $500,000 so they don't do it again!

1st round pick in 2008

1st round pick in 2009

A ban on all media from using the term "class organization" when refering to the franchise.

A ban on all media from using the term "football guru" when referring to BB.

If the Commish doesn't bring the hammer down, it will further sully the dwindling reputation of the NFL.

I guess you are a Pats fan.If it's been found out that they were guilty of cheating...they should be punished for it....not slapped on the wrist. Make it hurt so no other team thinks about doing it again. Was it too much when the Black Sox received their lifetime ban? Was Bart Giamatti giving Pete Rose a lifetime ban too excessive? Pre Bud Selig, baseball worked because it dealt with defamers of the game severely. If the NFL doesn't do this, it moves further down the road to being the same caliber of "sport" as the WWE.

I truly believe that it should be in the rulebook that anyone cought cheating (and outline what constitutes cheating) should forfeit the game (if they won) along with a sizable fine ($1 million). If someone cheats and wins it HAS to be assumed that the cheating was responsible for the win.

Throw the book at them(1st round draft pick), lets see what Tom Brady can do when he isn't given the defense on a platter...

I think there has to be a clear message sent here, that cheating in anyway shape or form will be dealt with harshly.

Def, forfeit the game, and Belicheck suspension. Draft picks can be gotten around, but throw that in too if you will.

Cheating cannot be tolerated, and if this thing is a "slap on the wrist" you better believe the underachieving teams will take note.

$250,000.00 fine. End of story.
I think that's pretty excessive compared to other fines I'm aware of that the league has given out before, and even compared to what other leagues have given out. I think anything in the range of a 2nd and 4th, two 3rds, a 1st by itself or maybe a 1st and 5th would be appropriate in addition to a 1-4 game suspension for BB and a $50k-$100k fine for the team. I think you need a suspension because it fits the crime for the person who actually caused it to happen. I also think the fine to hit the owner's pocket so the owners tell their coaches not to do this stuff is necessary, and I think the team as a whole needs to lose one or more draft picks so they don't walk away from it having had no on-the-field detriment for what they did.

all you "forfeit the game" folk do realize that the camera was confiscated in the 1st quarter and the contents of the tape were not seen by anyone who could have used them to impact the game with the Jets, right?

I'm a Pats fan, and a 1st day pick and a substantial fine sound about right, but forfeiting the game is idiotic. I am also positive that it will come out that every team does similar stuff, though probably not as brazenly.

Maybe its just me, but your "ban on all media" seems a bit over the top. Why would a penalty apply to CBS, ABC, etc.?

Heh, replying to myself to tell me I was wrong. I should have googled before making my post rather than after. Turns out the NFL fined the 49ers $500k for their salary cap violations. In light of that, the $250k is reasonable and perhaps even light.

Roger "The Hammer" Goodell will come down very hard as has since day one. The punishment is not for the specific crime of videotaping but for doing something he told them not to do five minutes ago. Remember that Goodell sent a memo to all of the teams right before the season that this monkey business would not be tolerated. So the Pats ignore the warning and do it anyway, in week 1! I agree with the posters above who say that a $250,000 fine to Kraft is the equivalent of couch change. I'll be shocked if the penalty is less than $1,000,000 and at least a first round draft pick. A Belecheck suspension is possible as well. Goodell is no joke!

"Proper" as in we can exclude what the commish is allowed to do and what he is likely to do? Simply what we feel is the right thing to occur in this situation?

If so, BB buried up to his neck in the sand, head covered in honey, velveeta cheese, and hot dogs shoved in all holes - a hungry Linda Tripp is released. Broadcast it in PPV for all to see.

Otherwise, the proper punishment is a 1 this year and a 3 next, a 500G fine and a four game suspension for BB.

What I think the commish will do is a 3rd and a 5 this year, a 250G fine and 1 game suspension for BB

I understand what you're saying and I also understand you're a pats fan and I respect that. I think the Pats could have beaten the jets hands down anyway, but the message is what I'm concerned about, thats why I say forfeit. I feel this should be made an example of, it's unfortunate that this is your team, but I'll say it again, cheating cannot be tolerated (especially in this league, and in Americas favorite pastime)

All those saying forfeit, you DO realize it is likely well beyond the commish's power to order that, right?

I've seen numerous people on the internet and on talk radio mention taking picks away, yet no one has addressed who those picks go to. I don't think the Jets deserve the picks, do we just skip every pick that is taken from the Pats and allow the team with the next pick to draft in their place?

I voted other. BB should have to personally post in all of these threads he's caused to be born. Plus, he has to write "Eric Mangini is a really nice guy" a thousand times on the blackboard.

I'm not seeing how this deserves an eyeroll. If anyone should be getting the eyeroll it is the countless Patriot fans such as yourself who feel anything beyond a slap on the wrist is unjust punishment. Forfeit the 1 game you were caught red handed cheating in and pay $500,000? You think it is more fair that the Pats should be awarded the fruits of cheating? Would you say a person who cheats on the SAT should get to keep the score? A guy caught cheating in your basement poker night should get to keep the winnings? An olympic runner should keep the gold medal after being found to be using performance enhancing drugs? Forfeiture of a game is a unique punishment which certainly fits this sort of wrongdoing, when there's no way of knowing how much the end result was caused by wrongdoing. No benefit of the dout to the cheater IMHO. Eyeroll? I think not.

Fine them or take a 2nd -5th round pick and move on. This is the most overblown topic we may come across this season.
:fishing: There will be no forfeit, no suspension of BB, and no loss of a 1st round pick.2nd and 5th, 250k fine seems most likely.
Agreed. My understanding is the tape was confiscated during the first quarter of the game. Considering Mangini was the one who ratted Belichick out, you have to assume the Jets changed their signals at half time if not sooner. Why should they forfeit the game when it seems highly unlikely the video taping had any impact on the outcome of the game? There should be a fine. I wouldn't be surprised if a 4th or 5th round pick were taken away. Belichick is not someone who doesn't think things through. He had to have had some concept of the risks involved in putting a Patriots employee with a video camera on the sideline of a former assistant. I have a feeling a lot of people are going to be disappointed when they do just get a slap on the wrist because this is being blown way out of proportion.

:blackdot: Agree with BigJim.

1st and 2nd day draft choice, fine and Belichick suspension.

Make a statement, and make it loud and clear. Goody might even go for two 1st day picks in different years.

Weather or not the Pats could have beaten the Jets "straight up" to me, is irrelevant. The issue here is cheating. If a teacher caught you cheating on a test in school, would they give you credit for the answers you made after the fact? Certainly not. Look, cheating is cheating, the fact that the Pats could have beaten the Jets without cheating makes it even worse.
