PSA - IIHF World Juniors starts today(10 min) (1 Viewer)

I watched a ton of these games live when it was in Anchorage, sometime around 1990.  Incredible stuff, with a Mogilny-Fedorov-Bure top line for Russia and many future NHLers, back when Europe was a mystery.

USA hockey sure is interesting. Debrincat leading scorer in OHL gets cut. Pretty sure Hockey Canada has done this too, of course, but risky move could backfire big-time.

Colorado Avalanche pick Tyson Jost makes the team even though he plays for North Dakota. Pretty rare for a Canadian kid who goes NCAA to get picked for the Canadian team.

And he scores Canada's first goal

Flyers have 9 prospects at the games. Two in this game - Myers, Hart for Canada and Vorobyov, Rubtsov fir Russia.

Five of the 9 were picked 4th round or later. Myers was an UDFA.

I don't know wtf happened there with Debrincat. Have to assume it was some type of character/discipline issue. He would have been one of their best 2 or 3 players.

USA playing good against Slovakia.

Great play between Keller and White with a beauty goal

Bad penalty by USA gives Slovokia a goal so 2-1 after 1

Interesting game. US was so good in first and Russia barely survived. Then it turned into a relatively even match.

Seems like a 3 horse race with sweden, Canada and USA to me.

Here's what might be weird - if I understand the layout - if Finland beat SUI on Saturday they finish 4th. If you win B you play them, defending champ and could be in danger of having them wake up. Maybe you don't want to win the USA v CAN showdown

Im pretty sure we want to beat the US in Trivial pursuit. I think the boys will be looking for a W regardless

Wild 2nd Rd Pick Greenway was a man today too. Dominated on the puck and along the wall. 6'5" and he played bigger.

Kaprizov with another goal on a great goalie screen and tip-in. Pretty excited to see him for the first time as he's looking like a steal for the Wild, who in addition to Kaprisov Captaining the Russians, have Eriksson Ek with the C for Sweden and Kunin the C for USA.

USA needs to get the power play going. Could've put this one away early with the first four PP of the game.

Parsons was solid in goal and didn't let this one get away.

Ahh. I actually didnt see the 5 minute call. Thought you might be referring to the second minor. That was legit.

Nice win.

Matthews in the skybox.

eta* It's funny. I was talking about transcendent talents from Canada already playing in the NHL instead of in this tournament, and I forgot about him.

Too bad Arizona doesn't have him. He might save that franchise.

Big win. Avoids what looks to be the main competition from the other pool until the gold medal game. Congrats. USA special teams outplayed Canada.

Greenway is a beast.

Dubois -3rd overall??

Switzerland giving USA all they can handle.
3-2 win for USA - Parsons MOTM with a couple of insane saves. Jordan Greenway with gamewinner in beast mode. Hischiesier for SUI is LEGIT.

Not much love for the tourney this year - on here or in Montreal and Toronto.  Terrible attendance numbers - even the Canada Quarter final had scores of empty seats. It was pretty pathetic to see, TBH.  After the superstars the last couple of years there's no star power which isn't helping.  That being said it can all still be redeemed if the USA and Canada win today. That would make for high drama on Friday!  Frankly, I like USA chances much better than the Red and White but we'll see.

I'm puzzled by the seeming lack of interest in Toronto/Montreal. I guess they do better in small towns where this is considered a huge event. In those big cities, perhaps it's overshadowed a bit and I'm assuming ticket prices are very high as well.

The link Renegade posted is a good summary of the issues. It's a combination of a lot of those but I do wish they'd go back to Jr hockey cities to host.  Enough of the Toronto/montreal and Vancouver (2019) hosts.  Living near London I was disappointed (but not surprised) they awarded 2019 to Vancouver/Victoria. London's rink can hold about 9000 people and it would be rocking - guaranteed!  Windsor was part of that bid and they, too, would sell out I'm almost certain (although they are smaller capacity).   It obviously comes down to $$ and it's sad to see.  I think it was 2003 or 2004 when London had submitted a bid previously and lost (they got the Memorial Cup though) and I distinctly remember thinking at that time that it will never come to a small centre again. I may actually be right for once in my life (unfortunately)

I agree - would be sold out here in Windsor (I'm less than 10 min from the arena)... capacity is smaller though, about 6500.  Would have been great to see a London/Windsor bid win.

We do have the Memorial Cup this spring and I'd love to go, but tickets are crazy.

I think Toronto is suffering from big event fatigue, and as for Montreal, I'm just not sure they care as much.
