FRANKLIN – Roy Rogers makes its return to northern New Jersey Tuesday with its planned grand opening of a restaurant in Sussex County.

The restaurant is just one of four locations Roy Rogers plans to launch over the next year in the northern half of the state. Yet-to-be announced sites, which will be in Bergen and Essex counties, are part of the company's plan to bring 100 new restaurants to the mid-Atlantic by 2018.

The Maryland-based fast food chain, known for its burgers and roast beef sandwiches, was created in 1968 and peaked at more than 650 restaurants in eight states, including New Jersey, before declining.

Of the company's remaining 50 restaurants, seven of them are in the Garden State.

The new location on Route 23 north in Franklin will open its doors 10:30 a.m. Tuesday for a grand opening celebration that includes Roy Rogers gift card giveaways to the first 50 people in line, according to a post on the company's Facebook page.

Franklin's Roy Rogers, which is located at the site of an Arby's that closed in 2014, will offer indoor and outdoor seating and a drive-thru window, the New Jersey Herald reported.

Big fan. They all but disappeared here in MD/VA/DC but have had a bit of an resurgence as of late.

Stay away the first month. (Crowded)

Wish they'd come back to PA besides the turnpike. Best chicken hands down.
My kids LOVE their chicken. We barely ever eat fast food but about once a month we hit Roy's.
I know this is disgusting, but if they sold a bucket of chicken skin, I'd eat an entire bucket. I freaking love their chicken.
The history of Roy Rogers is that they were originally owned by Marriott as sort of a spin-off from the Hot Shoppes, which if you are a long time Washingtonian you know all about. The fried chicken was called "Pappy Parker's Smokey Mountain Fried Chicken" and it was, in fact, some of the best fried chicken around. Marriott sold the brand and many/most of the locations to Hardees which lead to the end of Roy Rogers as a mass market brand. Some stores remained and the brand lived on in the turnpike rest areas.

KFC's Skinwich

KFC is testing a new sandwich: The Skinwich.

5 layers of fried chicken skin, lumped on a bun and topped with white american cheese and bacon.

It’s only available at a handful of KFCs (for now). One happened to be right near our office, so I walked over.

Mmmmmmmmmmmm

I was reading another article and it said something like, "Roy Rogers, which is known for their roast beef sandwiches and burgers, is..." WTF?? Totally dismissed their awesome chicken. :hot:

Better than when we were growing up, when Roy's was known for community tables and having to walk outside to go to the bathroom (the bathrooms were often indoors but for some reason without internal doors to the restaurant

The town I grew up in had one that was pretty nice. It originally was a Geno's (which had awesome chicken, too). After Roy's left, it became a Boston Market and has now become a Dunkin' Donuts. I don't really remember any other spots, so I can't say how it stacked up, but this Roy's was pretty nice.

I met my wife while working at a Roy's way back in the day so I'll always have a soft spot for them. We have one about 30 mins. from us that we visit about three times a year. Double R Bar burger or roast beef sandwich with cheese=yum.

I think you just won the "Most appropriate avatar next to a posting" award.

...And? Seriously, don't leave us hanging after that.

Seriously, please get me access to the Gold Rush Chicken Sandwich without having to eat at a turnpike rest stop, RR.

Thanks!

I actually PLAN rest stop meals when I drive from NY to BAL to see my dad. At least one Roy's trip either there or on the way back. It's easier to hit it going south though as Popeyes has more convenient stops North.

Last couple times I've had to go Albany I've done the Roy's as well on the Thruway.

I brought my sister to the last woodstock they had for her HS graduation present. We left as the bonfires started and headed down the thruway. We were hungry so we stopped at Roys to grab a bite. This was before cell phones so my sister calls my mother to tell her we were on our way. My mom apparently was in a nervous freak out thinking we were going to die. To this day I remember laughing at her while eating my two piece leg and thigh meal.

There is one down the Jersey shore in Bayville on Rt 9 and has been there for years, just like nothing ever changed. Having said that, I need to go back and get some.

Only downside to Roy's rest stop locations is that they don't carry milkshakes. And speaking of which, when I was at one last year, I noticed they switched from Hershey's ice cream to Edy's I believe. Still just as good. Real milksakes are so much better than the yogurt type mix places like McDonalds and Burger King sell.

Maybe it killed him.
Verdict

Nasty. The richness of all that fatty seasoned skin is totally overwhelming. It’s also tongue-parchingly-salty.

I started to gag and got that “brushing the back of your tongue” feeling. Had to spit it out. In KFC’s defense, the sandwich was luke-warm after taking the pics. But I doubt it would be much better hot.

With this latest move and the Double Down‘s success, KFC may be catching up to Hardees/BK in the “making sandwiches so nauseating they generate buzz” dept.

I live not far from that one but it has been years since I ate there.

Don't the rest stops only carry chicken? Their double burger was the best
 The few times I've stopped at ones on the PA turnpike, they had all the burgers too.
I think for a while that may have been true... cause I was JONESING for a Double R with a whole bunch o' pickles and Roy's (awesome) BBQ sauce.

But its been back at least for a few years, though you may need to ask - which is good cause they grill it fresh (and its fast)

God ####### dammit that skinwich is fake

I'd kill the last living unicorn for a single bite of that thing
Can't ya make it at home - probably a similar recipe to lambskin :)

Yesterday I went to the RR in the OP on the way back from a round of golf. If I told you we planned our round at a particular course, just so we could hit this for lunch after, would that be a bad thing?

It was all well worth it. First non-rest stop one I've been to in probably 15 years.
