Punt and Kickoff Returners 2010 (1 Viewer)

Monitor CJ Spiller. If he gets the KR job (which I think he will), draft him with confidence. Even if he only gets 100-150 carries and something like 20-30 receptions, he's a great returner and could put up monster numbers.

 
Danny Amendola was a guy last year that was startable. He finished at WR29 and #86 overall in a league I'm in that awards .5 pts for every 1 yd on punt/KO returns and 6 pts for TD's. Of course he was pretty involved in the offense too due to injuries to several Ram WR's.

 
I'm in a league like this too. 0.05pts per return yd (PR and KR) + 0.5 per actual return attempted + 6pts per TD. Does anyone have any idea of the best place to get projections on this. I can't find anything apart from a half-decent one on FFToolbox. I realise these come out later than most projections as the roster spots are decided later in general but does anyone have any thoughts on places to find them/guesses on when they might be availabe on Footballguys etc...? Thanks.

 
Could someone post a link to last year's returner statistics. The color coded one that used to be on Mike's signature. I can't find it anywhere. Thanks!

Projections: for those that inquired, I did not do any projections (aside from kickers of course) last year. I think someone did post some in the 2009 thread, although I don't recall off hand who it was.

Sole reason I don't bother with the Dominator--no return yards. :rant:
 
I have to use FFtoday's drafting tool because draft dominator doesn't give me a custom scoring field, or return yards. Please add return yards and touchdowns as a stat and make it so I don't have to subscribe to fftoday next year.

While I support adding return yards as a stat in Draft Dominator, in the meantime there's a workaround.Step #1- figure out how many receiving yards a single return yard is worth.Step #2- make your projections on how many return yards a player will get.Step #3- convert the return yards to receiving yards and add them to the projection in the draft dominator.To use my league as an example... punt return yards count the same as receiving yards, so the first thing I do is I go into the projections for all of the WRs who return punts and I manually increase their projected return yards by 250 (which is generally around the yardage total that a primary punt returner will wind up producing).
 
The problem with that is in DD and LD the numbers get overwritten. In the case of DD people have to wait until their draft, update the numbers, and then draft. Then say they get a new update and have another draft for a league with return yards; then update manually the return yards. LD it's probably very hard to keep updating with new stats and projections. Especially if they get overwritten every week.

I think a custom scoring field or two isn't too much to ask. The best thing would be a specific return yards and return td's included.

 
12 Team, PPR League.

We are debating whether or not to add return yards for our players.

What is an good scoring system for kick return yards and punt return yards so that these players aren't over valued. How many yards should equal one point?

Any suggestions and shared experiences are welcome!

The only suggesting I think most return leagues should implement if their returns are of any value is that they should lose points simply for the kick return. Any returner should have a minimum of 20 yard returns for KR, so awarding them for an unacceptable result is a no go, say they get 15 yards on a KR when they could have gotten 20 in they took a knee in the endzone.

We're using ESPN.com, so that type of scoring is unavailable.

Is 1 pt for every 25 yards of return too much?

The most kick-off return yards last season was Danny Amendola who had 1618 yards. If you break that down over 16 games, he averaged just over 100 yards a game. That would mean 4 points for him.

Is that too much?

 
One of my leagues does 1 point for every 40 kickoff return yards, 1 point for every 20 punt return yards, and 6 points per touchdown. I think it depends on what you want. This method gives returners who also start or play alot about a 2-3 point boost, and makes elite return men rosterable as flex options. Here are some examples of where guys ranked in our league vs a PPR only rank at wide receiver:

DeSean Jackson 9th versus 11th

Percy Harvin 17th versus 24th

Patrick Crayton 38th versus 51st

Josh Cribbs 39th versus outside of top 60

I don't have the link handy, but Singletary suggested recently that Ginn was projected to be the main guy for kickoff returns, and Kyle Williams is the projected punt returner. All of them looked terrible in minicamps catching punts, however, so its possible Vann could overcome Williams at least on punts with a great training camp and preseason.

But with Dez Bryant now out 4-6 weeks with a high right ankle sprain, the Cowboys will have to wait to see how good Bryant can be in the return game. In Saturday's morning session, Felix Jones was the first-team kick returner, followed by Miles Austin and Titus Ryan. Patrick Crayton, who returned two punts for touchdowns last year, would move up to the No. 1 punt return role, although Terence Newman can do it. Cletis Gordon and Bryan McCann have taken turns too.

Does Josh Wilson hold on to return duties in Seattle or will Tate and/or Washington get them?

Rotoworld) Mike Thomas is only expected to be "a default" option on kickoff returns due to his expanded offensive role. Analysis: Rookies Deji Karim and Scotty McGee are expected to handle all the returns, including punts. Thomas' value in return-yardage leagues will take a hit.

 
I count on the Training Camp articles here to update return guys under Special Teams. The first article has omitted them completely. Are following updates going to include them.

YES. This week's second Camp Update will be all returners in the special teams section. I split it up so as to give more attention to each group... specialists last week, returners this week.

Is there any chance the depth chart page will be updated with more recent KR/PR information? I like to have it all in one spot. Love this thread.
 
From the training camp reports it looks like two of the top 5 returners from last year (Amendola/Logan) could possibly not even make their respective rosters. Unless it's Cribbs, makes it hard to decide where to draft these guys. Our league has high return yard scoring (1 pt per return and 1 pt per 10 punt return yard, per 20 ko return yards). Anyone flying low on the radar that looks like a lock for a high percentage of their team's returns that could be on the waiver wire?

Amendola was a bright spot last yr.. find it difficult to think hes cut from the Rams. And if these 2 guys were to be cut I'm sure another team would sign them with in the hour.

I can't really find much. Jobs seem hard to pin down.Anyone know of a defensive full-time starter that will also get at least half of the punt or the kickoff returns for their team?Still searching for any good single-reference webpage dedicated to PR/KRs.
 
I've been in a kick return league for a couple of years now and one thing I know is that coaches tend to approach their returners like situational players or backups....very unsettled and there can be changes from week to week.

I got burned real bad with Ted Ginn when he wasn't the kick returner week 1 last year with no warning from the Dolphins. These jobs are very rarely set in stone this early in the season....and sometimes not even after the season starts. I think trying to predict return yardages by player thsi early is a 95% futile exercise because after reading the training camp reports, I can count the number of returner jobs that are actually settled on one hand. Cribbs is the only guy right now who is a lock to do both roles for his team. Every other guy is either in a competition or at best is slated to just take kickoffs or punts. Unless that player has an increased role as a starter, they are almost worthless, even in my league where return yards = rushing yards in points.

My whole point of this is pay attention to this thread and any other source you can find, but don't count on these guys for the entire season. Especially for anyone under coaches like Belichick, Sparano, McDaniels & Shanahan who are vague and cryptic when disclosing their teams plans. Also coaches who are quick to put guys in the doghouse like Haley or Singletary. I think many coaches feel the return game is more a result of organization and blocking than a good returner and are willing to just put anyone back there who can catch and run. I think they are wrong, but that seems to be the case more often than not.

bump. return yards in PD/LD/DD are still necessary. since Mike Herman does all the legwork on returners anyway, and he's already doing projections for kickers in PD, why not let him add his projections for returners so that they won't be overwritten?
 
Is any one maintaining a list of return yard projections for 2010? My league rewards yardage and scoring points for return yards and it could make a difference in drafting for depth.

there's some links/discussion of them in the IDP forum. Certianly, the IDP forum focuses on those returners who are also DBs etc, but the external links will have offensive KR/PR too.

After watching Will Blackmon’s would-be replacements bobble and bumble kickoffs and punts during practice for the past week and then in last Saturday night’s preseason opener, Green Bay Packers special teams coordinator Shawn Slocum was happy to see Blackmon back in action at practice Tuesday morning.

“I think Will will bring us some consistency,” Slocum said of Blackmon, who suffered a season-ending torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee last Oct. 5 and was having issues with the knee that kept him on the sideline. “We’re going to keep working with these young guys – we threw them out there, put their feet in the fire in the first ballgame and we had some problems. … (But) it’s excitement for me (to have Blackmon back) because I know he’s a good football player and I know he’s a productive returner. He adds quite a bit to our return game.”

Blackmon watched those practices and was on the sideline for the team’s loss to the Cleveland Browns, too, seeing undrafted rookie free agents Sam Shields (muffed punt recovered by the Browns, bobbled kickoff in the end zone) and Quinn Porter (bad decision on a short punt, pedestrian kickoff return) struggle mightily.

“I was just like, they can catch every ball, they can score tons of touchdowns. The bottom line is I’m still here,” Blackmon said after practicing for the first time since leaving the Aug. 5 nighttime practice early with soreness in his knee. “They’ve still got to compete. I know what I’ve done. So I’m making sure I get myself back to full strength so that I can continue to do what I was doing.”

At this point, there is no competition – at least for the punt return job. While Slocum wants to experiment with No. 2 running back Brandon Jackson as a possible kickoff returner instead of Blackmon, the Packers don’t have a viable alternative on punt returns. The only other reasonable option is cornerback Tramon Williams, but with the uncertain status of Al Harris and Williams’ importance to the defense, the coaches would prefer not to risk Williams on returns. After Blackmon went down last year, Jordy Nelson handled the majority of the punt and kickoff returns, but he did little to excite.
