Isn't this exactly what a contract extension does? Right now, he has no significant guarantees left, only small workout bonuses, which he's given up the past few years by not showing up for OTAs. He can be cut / traded next season with very little cap hit. They moved all his annual bonuses/guaranteed money up a couple years ago for cap relief, so he's been paid all that money already. An extension allows them to give him a ton more upfront money while spreading out the cap hit over the length of the new deal. The question we were all asking in February, that we're still asking today, is how long does the team want to commit itself to #12?
