QB Bailey Zappe, CLE (1 Viewer)

For Mac Jones' sake I hope he can get out of NE before they totally ruin him. Their WRs are not good and he hasn't been given anything to work with. They ruined a year of his development with not having an OCord last year.

Each year that Brady has been gone gets worse for that team. You see how much they needed Brady and that he was truly their Offense (playmaker and play caller).

Zappe isn't going to be the answer here unfortunately - he still has to work with the same crappy WRs. How can NE consistently have horrible WRs?

Zappe is worse than Jones, although people may find that hard to believe. In training camp, he made dumber decisions and worse throws than Mac. He panics, holds onto the ball way too long, and has no pocket awareness. At one point, the beat guys covering his reps in camp said there was an even ratio: out of every three snaps, one play got executed, one was a sack, and one was a turnover (fumble or INT). Maybe he could do more with a decent line and decent receiving options . . . but that's not what NE has to offer him. There's a reason Zappe was released, just like there's a reason that as bad as Mac's been, he hasn't started a game so far this year. He may get a chance to start, but I am not sure he has much of a leg up on either Grier or Cunningham.

I do find it hard to believe. I take you at your word @Anarchy99

The Vaseline lenses of history had me seeing him as more of a gunslinger than Mac which would have at minimum produced results better than the utter garbage of watching Mac stand back, take sacks and miss open guys by a mile. I have two dynasty teams headed to similar finishes as the NEPs, the optimism is real :ROFLMAO: even if the task seems monumental.

He is dead-on…the local media that covers the Pats is excellent and they were saying he was a complete disaster in camp.

I'm with Anarchy in that Zappe has not been good and they are not a fan of what he did in camp/practice. Hence why Zappe was released.

NE is a dumpster fire on offense and Zappe is a step back.

Also, please free Mac Jones before NE totally ruins him.

I can see this.

It's a similar discussion with Zach Wilson. As much as fans want to believe the coaches are idiots, they usually are not. They see all the players up close in practice. Most aren't beholden to any of them and will play the players that give them best chance to win.

the thing with wilson is, t semien has played in the league and has a body of work. honestly, he is likely better than wilson. if the jets bench wilson again it is likely the end of the line for him in NY. once they pull that trigger, they are admitting that wilson is a lost cause and a wasted pick. i think semien gives them a better chance to win from what my eyes tell me, but politics are saving him, not really what the coaches seeing IMO.

Even though NE has a bye, at today's practice (the only one of the week), observers reported that for the portion open to the media, the pecking order of the QBs was still Jones, Zappe, Grier (the same as it's been all season). Maybe that's subterfuge and they will alter that rotation by the time they play again, but reports had things the same.

The Athletic’s Jeff Howe reports the Patriots are preparing QB Bailey Zappe to start Week 13 against the Chargers.

was getting first-team reps at practice on Wednesday after replacing Mac Jones in the Patriots’ Week 12 loss against the Giants. He was in for the second half of the game, with an unappetizing 54 yards and an interception on 9-of-14 passing. Still, the Patriots believe he will be an upgrade over Jones and intend to start Zappe in Week 13 against the Chargers. Malik Cunningham was getting second-team reps, indicating he may be Zappe’s backup with Jones falling to third on the depth chart.

ZAPPE HOUR!!!!
Jones has been terrible . . . a 77.0 passer rating this season. Zappe this year clocks in with a 38.2 passer rating. Somehow, he's only been half as good as Mac.
This just confirms they are in tank mode. Zappe has been bad, really bad.

Don't want Mac having a good game and getting a win and ruin their draft spot.

They are not in tank mode...BB will not be there next year...this is simply a case of a bad team being bad.

You lost me at “and Jones having a good game”

Lots of rumours going around from him being gone to him being back. He signed a "lucrative" deal going into this season. The plan when it was signed for him to be with the team in 2024.

Now, does winning do NE any good? No, they won't make the playoffs. So, it is time to try to get a good draft pick. This is a common thing NFL teams do when knocked out of the playoffs.

I can't believe I have to respond to this but he has had some good games this year. He has played well in his career - much better than Zappe. NE doesn't want to win as they want a better draft pick/position.

Zappe, for what he has done on the field this year, has been worse than Mac. I have no doubt they want to move on from Mac. Losing games helps them get a higher draft pick and to get a new (drafted) QB on the roster.

I'll say it again, by playing Zappe they are not trying to win.

For Jone's sake I hope he gets a new start with a new team that actually wants to support the QB and the offense. NE's offense is a **** show and for years it has been neglected. The do need a new QB but if they treat the new QB like the old one they will manage to ruin another QB. As a Fins fan it has been beautiful.

I am all for the Pats losing out and getting the higher pick but Jones getting benched is not part of a master-plan...he should have been benched earlier actually...he has been awful, his teammates have no faith in him and the poor kid has been mentally destroyed...his benching is almost a humanitarian reason at this point...Zappe is worse than Jones but I am more concerned the change gives them a little spark...if they really were tanking continuing to play Mac is the smart move...this team is horrible, they don't need help tanking, they can do it all by themselves.

I can't believe I have to respond to this
Technically speaking, you didn’t. You have free will just like the rest of us. Ain’t no one putting a gun to your head and making you reply to posts on FBG. I’m just saying.

Also Mac jones has been abjectly terrible this year. I have seen zero from him to indicate that he is any sort of long term answer to the questions the Pats have at QB.

ETA: My Zappe posts have been tongue-in-cheek, and obviously so, so it’s not like I’m saying he is the answer either, but we don’t need to take Mac Jones any more seriously just because of draft capital.
He was projected to be a bad pick, he ended up being a bad pick. He probably better than he’s been this year (we saw it last year) but not by a lot.
