BAKER MAYFIELD QB, CLEVELAND BROWNS
Speaking Thursday, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll claimed the team was unlikely to dip into the veteran quarterback trade market.
“I don’t see us making a trade for anybody at all. I don’t see that happening," were Carroll's exact words. It's a stronger-than-it-needed-to-be denial, but the reality is, the Seahawks would probably still acquire Baker Mayfield or perhaps Jimmy Garoppolo for the right price. It is the "right price" that no one has seemed particularly interested in finding with Mayfield (or Garoppolo), but he would inarguably be a major upgrade on either Drew Lock or supposed Seahawks starter Geno Smith. The odds that Smith actually starts Week 1 are close to zero.

Will you please expand on this? I probably mentioned it before, but the 'adult' leak was in poor form and probably not well received at the decision making level. I don't understand what else others expected them to do.This continues to be such a shame. I feel for the guy.
He has a well documented history of overcoming when he's counted out so...I'm half curious if it's gonna be a good thing the Browns handled this poorly
Other than “the same old Browns” schtick, I’ve yet to hear a good response to these claims. Will you please expand on this? I probably mentioned it before, but the 'adult' leak was in poor form and probably not well received at the decision making level. I don't understand what else others expected them to do.
I guess the other way to do things is to wait until you have made all your deals before announcing your intentions. Then, of course, you catch hell for failure to being "stand up" guys. Will you please expand on this? If you put a cow to market after winter, then everyone bids highly on him and he'll go to the highest bidder. If you hold onto him you'll get nothing. If you wait til winter, you'll get little for him because you're basically giving someone the task of feeding and keeping him somehow warm and not dying. Will you please expand on this? I probably mentioned it before, but the 'adult' leak was in poor form and probably not well received at the decision making level. I don't understand what else others expected them to do.
lol, right? That's all well and good, but it fails to mention that trading him would have required doing so before the team knew about Watson's decision.
I Google and see March 19. Obviously it's May and both the big free agent window and the draft have taken place. "Before" was not required. That's all well and good, but it fails to mention that trading him would have required doing so before the team knew about Watson's decision.
Huh??I Google and see March 19. Obviously it's May and both the big free agent window and the draft have taken place. "Before" was not required.
Teams have entered the off-season with questionable players at positions for decades and then added them in free agency and/or the draft.
You have this odd point that's like "what if they play games in March?"
Carroll was on XM/Sirrius and discussed how well Geno played last year and how pleasantly surprised he was.At this point, I’m sure they’ll be able to trade him even if there aren’t any major injuries to a QB in camp, but it seems like they wouldn’t get much and Baker may not even be traded somewhere to start. It would be close to the season by then. Maybe Seattle is bluffing, but I kind of believe that they’ll give Lock a shot and fall back on Geno if they have to. Why not Baker may barely get them to the playoffs but they wouldn’t be a serious contender even in the NFC.
Bryce Young looks a lot like a young Russell Wilson, so if the plan is to suck enough to get the 1-2 pick, they’d be staying the course starting Geno or Lock.Carroll was on XM/Sirrius and discussed how well Geno played last year and how pleasantly surprised he was.
He talked like they are not changing the system but looking for Russell Wilson II. That never works and is a bad bad sign.
Unfortunately, it sounded to me like we're waiting for them to (inevitably) fail to find another Wilson and then they'll be open to the idea of revamping the offense to suit some new guy.
He was a catalyst for change and then resistant to it in New England many years ago and lost his job. I couldn't help but think "didn't you learn from that?" and it was pretty disconcerting.
Good for Geno I guess but...oof
I thought I’d read that the Browns weren’t offering a buy-out and wanted to deal him.If Baker thought super highly of himself he could accept a buyout and go sign somewhere......if anyone even wants him
Seems more like people are more holding his lack of maturity against him.I still think Baker can be a solid NFL starting QB. He led the Browns to a playoff berth and won at Pittsburgh. He has had 2 really good season out of his 4 and last year he was injured so I don't think you can hold that against him but everyone has.
There's not a huge market now. There's a lot of teams that are sticking with their current guy in a "let's see what he does this year". But if those guys falter there could be a huge opportunity next year - Phi, Wash, Ind, Mia, NO, Car, Sea....If Baker thought super highly of himself he could accept a buyout and go sign somewhere......if anyone even wants him
Yes if Baker had any sense at all he would be the best little soldier of all time starting right now, ball out during whatever games Watson is suspended, and get himself a decent contract somewhere next off-season.There's not a huge market now. There's absolutely incentive to take the 18 mil this year and bide your time to pick a good spot next year.
I agree with you and think even if he had just put that message and attitude out there in the first place he'd have been traded already because demand would actually exist. He's decent enough but the bad attitude killed his chances.ghostguy123 said:if Baker had any sense at all he would be the best little soldier of all time starting right now, ball out during whatever games Watson is suspended, and get himself a decent contract somewhere next off-season
I'd kind of agree with everything but the bolded. Mayfield has accomplished a lot. For Browns fans born in the 90's, Mayfield is easily the best QB of their lifetimes.ghostguy123 said:Yes if Baker had any sense at all he would be the best little soldier of all time starting right now, ball out during whatever games Watson is suspended, and get himself a decent contract somewhere next off-season.
Alas, I don't see it. He's too emotional. I'm not sure he has the ability to do that. He appears to be very entitled, yet he has accomplished very little.
He is costing himself money every day that passes.
That's not saying much. That's the tallest midget argumentI'd kind of agree with everything but the bolded. Mayfield has accomplished a lot. For Browns fans born in the 90's, Mayfield is easily the best QB of their lifetimes.
According to CBS Sports' Josina Anderson, the Browns' asking price for Mayfield may be too high for NFL teams searching for a signal-caller, and Cleveland may have no choice but to release the disgruntled quarterback.
"I spoke to a source from a team that expressed interest in Baker Mayfield, had talks, but they cooled not wanting to pay asking price feeling he has to be cut," Anderson tweeted. "Their follow-up comment tonight: 'no one's trying to do the Browns any favors in this situation.'"
The Athletic's Jeff Howe reports the Panthers and Seahawks "haven't ruled out" acquiring Baker Mayfield.
Howe noted that the Browns haven't been willing to take on enough of Mayfield's $18.9 million, fully guaranteed salary to get a deal done. The only leverage the Browns have is the quarterback situations for the Panthers and Seahawks. While Carolina might feel comfortable gambling on rookie passer Matt Corral to quickly overtake Sam Darnold, Seattle's outlook is bleak. Geno Smith currently has the edge over Drew Lock, which speaks for itself. If either team gets a close look at their quarterbacks in camp and decides they need an upgrade, the Browns will be waiting. Until then, things will continue to be awkward for Cleveland and Mayfield.

Most underrated player on all 32 NFL teamsSeahawks "haven't ruled out" acquiring Baker Mayfield.
Unless they’re “tanking” for a top QB in next year’s draft. I don’t think they’re legit contenders even with Mayfield and that’s not a knock on Mayfield who I do think should be starting somewhere.IMO, there's close to zero chance that Seattle goes into the season with Lock and Geno as their top two QB's. The only question is whether they prefer Baker or Jimmy G.
Reports are Jimmy won't be ready until November, Baker due back by training camp.Marauder said:...The only question is whether they prefer Baker or Jimmy G.
BAKER MAYFIELD QB, CLEVELAND BROWNS
The Charlotte Observer reports the Panthers wanted the Browns to cover $13-14 million in a trade for Baker Mayfield.
The Panthers traded up to draft Matt Corral in the third round after talks stalled between the sides. With Carolina seemingly out on Mayfield, the Browns are in a zero leverage spot, with their only option to trade Mayfield and cover the majority of his salary. A Mayfield release contains no offset language, while keeping him as a roster holdout for a 2023 compensatory pick is unlikely given how it would be viewed. The Seahawks, who coach Pete Carroll said in March plan to carry four quarterbacks, remain Mayfield's top landing spot.

Browns beat writer Mary Kay Cabot reports the team has "no plans" to cut Baker Mayfield.
Cabot's report comes from a league source who said that the team wouldn't cut Mayfield even if he was on the roster by training camp. The former No. 1 overall pick is due a fully-guaranteed $18.86 million this season, which Cleveland is prepared to pay if they can't work out a trade. Earlier this week it was reported that the Panthers were willing to pay close to $6 million of Mayfield's contract for a draft-day trade, however, talks stalled and the Panthers instead traded up to draft Matt Corral. Mayfield has been a no-show at OTAs as he hopes to find a trade in a market that seems largely disinterested in his services.

A source tells the Cleveland Plain Dealer that the Seahawks would likely sign Baker Mayfield were he released by the Browns.
You may reply "duh," but it is notable since the Seahawks are clearly unwilling to surrender meaningful trade compensation for Mayfield or his salary. This at least confirms they have interest in the player in a vacuum. For their part, the Browns seem desperate to offload some of Mayfield's money in a salary dump deal rather than cut him altogether. With this offseason's game of quarterback musical chairs long since over, the Browns will eventually have to face the music and cut Mayfield loose.

Browns have excused QB Baker Mayfield from mandatory minicamp.
The move makes sense for both sides. Mayfield understandably wants to move on from the Browns, and the Browns would like his trade market to heat back up. A minicamp injury would be a disaster for everyone involved. It's likely that Mayfield's status will remain up in the air until the NFL makes a decision on Deshaun Watson.

CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones reports there's "urgency on Carolina's side" to trade for Baker Mayfield soon.
The sticking point in the trade talks, per Jones, is Mayfield's salary and how much of it the Browns will eat to get him out of Cleveland. The Panthers would like to get Mayfield acclimated with the team's offensive system during minicamps, well before the crunch time of training camp. Mayfield would be a clear upgrade over Sam Darnold, who was miserable as Carolina's starter in 2021. Despite a poor, injury-marred 2021 campaign, Mayfield's 2020 season showed he can be a passable game manager in the NFL. Everyone in the Carolina offense, especially D.J. Moore and Robbie Anderson, would get a fantasy bump with Mayfield under center in 2022.

From Faust's link above.... Interesting that the guy who drafted him is a consultant for the Lions, I'm sure Dorsey who used the first pick of the draft would see a bargain.
CBS Sports's Josina Anderson reports the Panthers "are still doing its due diligence in terms of looking into QB Baker Mayfield, the football player and the person."
Anderson's note that Carolina is looking into Mayfield "as a person" is interesting because all previous reports have painted his contract as the only hangup in a potential trade. It's possible that the Panthers don't see him as a perfect cultural fit, though Mayfield has generally drawn praise from his teammates and coaches, sans Odell Beckham. Sam Darnold currently has the inside track to starting in Week 1 despite an atrocious 2021 season. If he struggles in camp, the Panthers could hand the reigns to rookie Matt Corral or pull the trigger on Mayfield.

Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer reports the Browns are willing to pick up half of Baker Mayfield's salary in a trade.
The Panthers would only do a Mayfield trade “if it’s a bargain,” according to Breer, with Sam Darnold already making $18 million on a fifth-year option. Paying $9 million of Mayfield’s salary is closer to the reported $13 million the Panthers asked the Browns to cover at the draft. Carolina’s renewed Mayfield interest is a bad sign for third-round QB Matt Corral. The Mayfield market is expected to heat up ahead of July’s training camp.
