We should have at least a partial answer after Purdy’s surgery. Either he has the cleanup procedure or the full reconstruction (which they generally don’t have a solid opinion on until they open up the elbow).

I love what I saw with the kid last year but he is still not a definite and regardless of how the surgery goes it will be a tough offseason for him...after last season's QB debacle I just can't see SF gambling at QB...they need to plan for a worst-case scenario now and not in August...and IMO they are too good of an organization not to.

He won't be out all year. If he gets surgery next week as planned, he should be 100% and cleared to play by early to mid September (barring any setbacks). Whether or not Lance holds him off is the question.

not exactly true - they wont know the extent of the damage until they are in there. Its possible when they are in they pivot to a more intensive procedure that could lead to him being out the entire season. Wont know for sure until post op which should be this week finally

Disagree there. With SFs QB injury history under Shanahan, it's almost a guarantee whoever signs will see playing time, and what QB wouldn't want to run this offense?

Maybe not from our POV, but SF should have a chance to give Lance the preseason and first few games to show whatever. That would give them a chance to plug in Purdy at their option.
I'd think its very attractive to a certain kind of FA. Obviously its not where a guy like Carr would want to go, and Rodgers/Lamar are way too pricey.
I keep coming back to Matt Ryan. Experienced, little no learning curve with the offense, and likely willing to accept backup job, but more than capable of starting in a pinch. Basically a good insurance policy that would be more likely than not to be needed.
I do think its highly unlikely SF goes into camp with Lance/Purdy and no capable other option, even if they'd prefer 1 of those 2 win the job.

the best news the Niners could have gotten from Brock Purdy’s elbow surgery was that it didn’t have to be massively invasive, and there is optimism that he should be able to throw the football without restriction in five to six months. Just another reason why San Francisco won’t overreact and spend/draft significantly on a quarterback. This also gives Trey Lance a runway to be the number one guy through the offseason, with the reps and responsibility that entails. Overall, good news for Kyle Shanahan.

If they truly are all in on Purdy they should deal Lance at the draft. Darnold could easily hold down the fort and this is probably the time to get some value back for Lance...of course nothing close to what they gave up. Im thinking a 2d rder....if they wait one more year hes going into the 4th yr when a team has to make a call on an extension which is likely too late.

Possibly mentioned upthread, but seems like several folks are trying to connect the dots between new Titans GM Ran Carthon and his previous ties to the Niners. With the Titans seemingly ready to move away from Tannehill, it makes a lot of sense - on paper at least.

They're not gonna deal Lance any time soon. They had 3 QBs last season and it wasn't enough, and Purdy may not be ready for weeks into the season. Zero chance they move Lance before they even know what they have.

So they basically just expanded the roster by 1. Nothing prevented SF from having 3 QBs active in the NFCCG. They chose to have another player at a different position.

Shanahan acknowledged that there’s no timeline set for Purdy’s return, but added they “don’t have any reason to think otherwise” at the moment, which is great news for the 49ers and Purdy.
He’ll begin his throwing program at some point next week. That doesn’t mean Purdy will be launching 50-yarders, but he’ll begin gripping a football and throwing roughly five or so yards.

Not sure about regression as far as actual performance goes, but I do see a regression to his statistical output. I was impressed with his tenacity and his leadership....but not so much with his actual play on the field. He didn't seem to have any special traits at all, and his accuracy was merely a little above average. Every time I saw him play (3 or 4 games) it seemed the opposing team dropped what looked like an easy pick, and he certainly benefited from superior talent around him.
The sample size is still pretty small. Maybe I'm just not seeing something that should be obvious, maybe some folks are seeing something that simply isn't there. The most likely scenario is that he's an NFL level starter but not a top 10 type talent. We'll see.

What Purdy did last year was incredible and deserves first crack at starting, but is he really a better QB than Darnold? I’m interested in seeing what Sam could do if given a chance in a system that has had guys like Mullens, Purdy and Garrappolo have success.

This is why I don't think Purdy will have much regression. He's not a gimmick kind of guy that DCs can "figure out" in an offseason. He's a perfect fit for that offense and I see him like an Alex Smith in KC kind of player...good player, but great fit in the system.

Agree with what you are saying, especially the part about not being a gimmick guy, but I do think he has some special traits people are underestimating. He did what he did last season with basically no prep work. The injury set him back of course, but looking forward to what he can do with a better understanding of the offense. I really hope the 49ers make sure he is 100 percent before he sees the field though.

The S2 test seems to have replaced the Wonderlic as the test of choice for QB's in recent years because it focuses more on processing speed rather than general problem-solving. Supposedly guys like Mahomes, Josh Allen, and Burrow all scored in the high 90's.
