QB Brock Purdy, SF (2 Viewers)

football is a really tough game on a person's health. especially Jimmy G. Not a knock on him, just fact. he is good when he plays.

I think it was in the Elijah Mitchell thread last season where a poster went into great detail about the way Shanahan structures a lot of his running plays and how it seems to contribute to higher speed collisions. But this is the Purdy thread and I think wingnut would prefer we keep it about Purdy.

Purdy also found Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel for completions, putting a bow on a strong preseason. The second-year question mark allayed concerns about his surgically-repaired elbow this summer and continued to reward coach Kyle Shanahan’s faith in him despite last year’s limited sample size. Playing in one of the league’s most fantasy-friendly schemes with an elite skill corps, Purdy could dramatically overperform his barely-there QB2 ADP.

Brock Purdy completed 19-of-29 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns in the 49ers’ 30-7, Week 1 victory over the Steelers, adding three rushes for 20 additional yards.

Purdy also fumbled twice, losing one. That was bad — Purdy never felt the rush on his giveaway — but there were not as many “interceptable balls” as he displayed in his shaky 2022-23 outings. Purdy was mostly just checking down to wide-open pass catchers, but he always knew where they were going to be. And he wasn’t only checking down to wide-open pass catchers. His second Brandon Aiyuk touchdown strike came against sticky coverage in the front right corner of the end zone. It was maybe the best play of Purdy’s young career. Some of us were skeptical about the 49ers’ zero-hesitation decision to run it back with Purdy, but this was a really strong performance against a top-notch defense. Purdy will be on the streamer radar for Week 2 against the Rams.

With 220 passing yards and 2 touchdown passes in today's 49ers victory, Brock Purdy is the 1st QB in
NFL history to win each of his first 6 career regular-season starts and throw 2+ TD passes in each start.
 
Purdy obviously isn't the first late round pick to have considerable success, but it highlights how scouting is so imprecise, and attempts by scouts to get precise with measurables/metrics often fails big time.
 
My first time playing superflex this year and got Purdy reasonably cheap as my QB2

A) got to watch his whole game as it was on in my market. The kid can play. Even his behind the back fumble recovery was impressive to me. Excited to have a piece of him and can watch him play more.

B) as a traditionalist… I’ve always turned my nose up at 2QB leagues for some reason. I immediately found that this answer was wrong. Having all the QBs in the league owned and having to pay attention to the “lesser” drafted QBs is a game changer.
 
Disclaimer...I am not saying he is Tom Brady...but how he plays reminds me so much of him...kid is only going to get better as the game slows down more for him...in SF I would jump on him now because the price is only going to go up.

Brock Purdy finished with the 3rd-highest Passer Rating in Week 1 (111.3).

Starting off 2023 right where he left off in 2022. Watching the game back over and it's amazing how in command he is of the offense after only 9 starts.
 
Believe yet? Still time to jump on the Purdy wagon.

Lombardi:

Brock Purdy on intermediate passes (10-20 air yards) at Pittsburgh: 9-10 (90%), 142 yards, 14.2 YPA.

Purdy's 2022 saw the highest completion percentage on such passes (80.4%) that PFF has on record. More of the same in 2023 Week 1.
 
I think it's clear Purdy has the goods as an NFL passer, but what remains to be seen is how much that translates into fantasy production. He's probably got a solid floor, but the upside is still in question.

I think we’ll see a lot more 3 td games from him this year. He had mostly 2 td games his rookie year.

Yeah, he'll have some spike TD games. My point is that as efficient as he is, the passing game is unlikely to be bombs away unless the game script calls for it. And with their defense, those may be more the exception than the rule. And he's not going to be running the ball a ton.

He's a heck of a story and obviously a good QB, but if we're talking fantasy only here, the story may not be quite as bright.

Agree with this 100%. As a Niner fan I'm ecstatic he's so efficient, but he's prob not gonna be a top FF QB. Troy Aikman comes to mind - a good real world QB who won't have eye popping FF numbers.

A young Aikman is a great comparison.

Purdy is in an extraordinary situation, and he's running with it. My bets were on Lance, but I'm rooting for this kid!

If he averages 250 yards and 2 TDs per game, that’s not too bad at all.

There were a couple of miscues that could have easily been turnovers but I think it’s a nice stat line nonetheless. Second year QB that’s consistently winning games, wins another game with 300+ yards and a couple TDs. That’s still a good line even if there is an INT or two presuming the other passing stats were solid as they were tonight.
