QB Bryce Young, CAR (1 Viewer)

Very happy for Young. He needed help and they gave it to him in this draft. Not sure they picked the right WR, but almost anything is better than what they had last year. The RB/TE combo should really help him too.
I found it odd.
He got sacked a thousand times and hit a million times and they didn't draft linemen. I know their line was supposed to be good last year but I felt that showed an odd confidence in simply "next year will be different."
I loved the Bengals ballsy we're taking Chase and not Sewell approach and they surely pulled it off but it's like tattooed on my brain that Sewell is the smartest pick.
Years later, here the Panthers are and I can't help but think "you're not the Bengals."

Another thing- did you see him on the sideline? He definitely absorbed those hits and it affected him. If they're wrong and he has another year of hits, his career could be over like David Carr and others as he simply becomes a player with PTSD. He was a cool calm poised college QB and ....I just don't know if this was the way to go.
They signed two new guards. Ekwonu comes up 7th on the pff list (but people did think he stunk last year). Not sure drafting backup linemen helps him.
I don't know if this is good. I'd usually say PFF missed that one or some wise comment like are they even watching. I don't at all agree with his rating.
I think there's a trap with linemen that many of us (or just me 🙃) can't get past. Young ones gotta learn and struggle. New free agents are gonna have hiccups til they get acclimated etc.
Is it ok that he allowed 11 sacks because he's young and next year will be better or is he not good enough?
I don't know how to feel about his 8 sacks allowed and then only three over the final twelve- doing well with the coaching change. Is the newest new coach good for him?

The whole line stunk w penalties including him.
Not going to argue about the rating because the eye test agrees with you. That said, you're not going to draft someone to replace him in in year 3. The guards who came in via FA have to start. I just don't see where adding linemen in the draft would have made a difference relative to the skill positions that were available to add.
Count me in the camp that was really shocked to read PFF ranked him 7th. I did not think he looked at all like a starter level LT in pass protection.

I think I'll be a guy who takes a shot on him. He looked lost in year 1, but I believe Canales can turn things around for Young. Canales turned it around for Geno and Baker and I believe Young will be the next. He'll be in a simplified offense where his arm talent and playmaking can take over. The Panthers were a wreck last season and some of that blame falls on Young. His situation is just so much better this year.

Panthers improved their OL and added D. Johnson in FA.
Drafted a WR, RB, TE in the first 101 picks.

Young was a winner at Alabama and I think his price is right for a buy low.

Defense is bad too so they'll be chasing points all season.

Goff looked absolutely lost as a rookie in 7 GS.

New coach, came back Y2 a new man - very surprising top 10.

Young could make a similar jump. Basing this off what we saw in college, bc personally I didn’t find anything encouraging about his rookie year.

Agree with all of this.

Dwain McFarland
Only one preseason drive but the Bryce Young we saw yesterday looked more like the one from Alabama.

Pushing the ball downfield, using his legs to buy time for WRs.

The Panthers spent a ton of capital on offense this offseason and brought in Dave Canales.

Young might surprise.

I think he makes a nice jump as well. Not sure who is going to get catches besides DJ. Maybe a spread it around approach.

My offseason optimism was misplaced. I thought the additional talent, new HC and another year under his belt would improve things. I'll give the process another week, but Young looks like he doesn't belong in the NFL.

Bust O Matic

Gonna kill the entire Panthers offense and any chance for fantasy relevance this year and potentially next year, unless Brooks is a stud stud and they just go run heavy, which I doubt.

Pretty stoked I took this guy over Stroud twice in dynasties last year.

Wonder if he'll even be a starter beyond this season. Based on what we've seen career to date, I can't see it unless he shows something ROS. He really doesn't have to show much to be given a lot more time. Just been a complete nothing burger with him so far

And think it'll be a long time before a franchise takes another tiny QB atop the draft. It's become readily apparent them not being able to see over the line absolutely is a thing. Kyler has a gun & can get out of the pocket.....but he's also missing wide open guys he can't see as he does it.

I’m ready to drop him, even in dynasty. I don’t think he’s worth very much and am thankful he didn’t cost a lot in 1QB leagues. I don’t play Superflex, so I feel sorry for those folks who wasted a top 3 pick for him.

They're going to be picking #1 again so probably not.

It's just really weird how bad he is at this. Like, I thought we'd see at least a little progression but this guy is terrible. I'm trying to think of an NFL player who was drafted this high who showed the world how bad he was this quickly and I'm having a hard time.

Tony Mandarich was drafted #2 overall in 1989 (one slot before Barry Sanders) and he was terrible from the beginning. Jamarcus Russell was #1 overall and was terrible.

But yeah. Few and far between.

He should play in a pair of 70s style platform shoes.

His size is not the problem. His pre/post snap reads and maddening inaccuracy are. He wasn't asked to do a lot at Alabama. His receivers had insane separation. His line gave him days to throw. He had many of the same problems he has now that were masked by the rest of his team looking like they were college athletes playing vs high schoolers. We should have seen this coming. I was screaming for them to take AR, but seeing how both AR AND Stroud look like can't miss prospects, this one hurts.

This whole Panthers team is a mess. They really screwed the pooch with the Bears trade, but it's something they should be able to recover from. Rookie deal parameters really help teams that choose 1st round busts at the position. I don't think we'll see much more of this guy.

Zach Wilson
Sean Payton is going to pull a jedi mind trick on someone and trade Wilson to a desperate team for a 3rd rounder, maybe more. Browns maybe? Giants? Packers? Sean had purpose in talking him up during preseason, he's playing the long game.

I saw examples of both sets of problems yesterday. How he didn't audible on his last throw though, really stuck out. Line graded well per PFF (and with my eyes) and it seemed like the receivers had more windows to throw to. I doubt this is going to be solved.

Yeah, I don't think his problems are fixable. He has never been accurate and I'm not really aware of this ever really be solved. It's a story we've seen play out in the NFL more times than I can count. He doesn't have prototypical size. His mobility is decent, but that's not going to help much if you're not as fast as Kyler and if you sail passes 10 yards over WR's heads when they break free. Let him take his lumps the rest of the season, do your best not to lose the team, and draft a new QB next year. They still have their own first, so losing out wouldn't be the worst course of action.

ETA - There were multiple occasions where DJ, AT, Mingo and XL we're wide open and just missed or never even looked at. It seems like everyone on the offense is doing their job save for the QB.
