QB Bryce Young, CAR (3 Viewers)

I bought into the hype.. I can't wait to tell him about it in about 5 years when he is taking my Subway order.
Don't really get this take. He looks like a complete bust, but he's still going to make almost $40M just from the Panthers and he'll never have to buy a drink in Alabama. Dude is set for life. I'd love to have had the opportunity to bomb in the NFL like this.

I think benching Young is probably the right move at this stage. As I said over in the Panthers thread: he is clearly regressing. You cannot spend a second season unable to evaluate anyone else on the roster because your QB puts the team in such a hole.

However, this video shows exactly why the Panthers are doomed either way. Tepper is meddling with his staff yet again while being too chicken-**** to do it publicly.

Do you guys think Young gets another shot in Carolina this season or next? It'd be wild to give up on the number one overall after a little more than one season

If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and walks like a duck, then by God it’s a duck.

One might say, then what about Richardson? I’m not willing to say he is not talented, unlike Young.

And you know what? Canales did that on purpose. He's letting people know, 'hey, I wouldn't have started him for two games and pulled him. This was hedge fund guy'.
Saving his rep for the next job.

Canales signed up for this, tho. Everyone knows what Tepper is, and among the league, it's probably worse than what we think. Canales took the bag of money, he's gonna get 10 or 12 million before Tepper bursts his next blood vessel. Good for him, he's never made big money yet.

It's hazard pay.

I think its sitting him for a few games. Let him watch, learn. He's on a cheap rookie deal, it would be HIGHLY unusual to only get 1 season and 2 games before kicking a franchise QB and #1 pick to the curb.

I agree it’s highly unusual but it’s also highly unusual for a player to be this bad. He’s beyond the pale. He’ll never even be league average.

After ranking 27th last year, the Panthers have the 5th-best @PFF pass blocking grade.

That's been the most concerning part of Bryce Young's regression
Yeah, watching the Panthers, the OL is playing well, but Young is hesitant to throw into tight windows, and none of the WRs are separating.

Dalton will likely be better, but its not all on Young. Perhaps sitting will be good for him?

Yeah I think if Dalton falters and things don't turn around, that they'd look back to Young again after a stretch.

Dalton named week 3 starter. wow. I quote Bob Barker "this guy sucks!"
I understand protecting Bryce and giving him a chance in the future. I don't understand going with Dalton. I would absolutely shocked if he rights the ship. It seems like this team is on a road to nowhere.

I know everyone will say it is next to impossible to find a QB on the street but desperate times call for desperate measures. After all, Jake Delhomme was one of street free agents that John Fox took a chance on.

Gives the Panthers a fighting chance vs the Raiders
Not sure why they are giving up on Young so quickly
Not likely Young will bounce back from this
I read in this thread (I believe) something about him jumping on lots of passes? I suppose that happens if you aren't tall enough to see over a lineman. Where is Doug Flutie when you need him?

I think, with jobs being on the line, putting someone in who has demonstrated a vague amount of competence previously is probably a good idea.

I think they are at the point where it's either get Young out the team and piss him off/shatter his confidence/admit a huge error, or, leave him in and piss everyone else on the team off/almost guarantee you lose your job/continue the delusion that he is somehow making progress.

If I was a player on the Panthers I'd want him moved out the way and Dalton put in. Young is actively making them an even worse team.

Sucks for Panther fans, but it had to be done. Dalton at least gives them a punchers chance and now maybe we can see what Mingo and Leggette are.

Young was DraftKings o/u passing yards hack. Smashing that under has been easy money this year.

I guess, assuming Tepper was involved, Canales' only other option would have been to lie. A guy that has been so public with his prior demons/mistakes doesn't seem like the type to lie for his boss.

It sucks that Tepper owns the team in my avatar too. At least he actually brought it here (along with tax dollars), but he is running that poorly as well.

You don't bench your former first overall pick two games into his second season unless:

1) You're sure you're going to be moving on from him after the season
2) You think the locker room is going to lose faith in you if you don't make the change.

Just a brutal outcome.

IMO it is pretty apparent quickly if you can or can’t play in this league. i really don’t know what young does well enough to say he can play. he’s gonna go full zach wilson.

I'm thinking it's the locker room, which if you lose, you lose.

Is it time to drop in SuperFlex in shallower rosters? Kind of reminds me of the Lance debacle, only different of course.

Has there been any good examples of qbs that were benched because they sucked so much (coachspeak is that they need to regain their confidence) and then come back and be a star?

Every example i can think of leads to Young getting cut

Star? Probably not. But there have been some QBs who just take longer to play better. Baker Mayfield and Same Darnold are statistically two of the better QBs so far this year. Both failed to be franchise guys at their first stop.

Which after their benching led to them being cut and it taking multiple teams

Mayfield seems like he's a fit. We will see what the season has to say about Darnold. He's a bottom 1/4 qb typically

Why are they giving up on Young? I don't know, maybe CAR wants to try and win some games this year. Clear that Young isn't up to the task right now. He looks like a deer in the headlights.

Might as well let him learn from Dalton for a while.

Young appears to have physical shortcomings that people (including the Panthers) ignored. Thinking he would overcome it, but hasn't.....yet....

Again though has that ever worked? History would say that if you give up on QB you may as well cut him because he's not rebounding

In most cases you're right. But you might as well try. CAR is not going to the playoffs this year. See if you can salvage him.

Would not give up on his career yet.

Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold and Geno Smith have been given up for dead multiple times.

He's played terrible, no doubt, but I was trying to make a point in the trade thread a few days ago that Bryce played for Alabama and a powerhouse high school team and going from that to trying to carry the least talented team in the NFL with offensive coaches I'm not overly impressed was just to huge of an obstacle.

I'll say again and with of course zero rumors supporting but this but I'd keep an eye out for McVay and the Rams in particular obtaining him after this season, and no not so McVay has a QB he can look in the eye. I feel like Bryce could basically be his avatar, not so dissimilar to Purdy/Kyle. There are other QB needy teams who will want to take a shot on if he's available at the right price but really think he needs to put himself in the right situation.

jim plunkett…..and i’m reaching.

hard to cut young, i haven’t looked, but wouldn’t the cap hit be hideous?
How could the cap be an issue when Young is on his rookie contract?
rookie contract or not, cutting him brings around $30mill in dead cap? i may be wrong, i have a hard deciphering spotrac.
You are correct on the dead cap hit. His cap hit for 2024 is 8M with a 31M dead cap hit. The dead cap is a charge for a player who is no longer on the roster. The number is calculated from the remaining signing bonus and any guaranteed salary. This is not a cash payment but rather a charge to the salary cap.

He's 23. I think they made him a starter too soon. Yeah, the modern NFL doesn't like drafting guys to hold a clipboard for a year anymore, but, that system worked. Lots of QBs hit their stride at 27-28. Not saying Young is worth stashing 4 years, for sure, but the organization didn't do him any favors and may have hampered his career by fast-tracking him (or, by assuming he's the fast-track type that other rookie QBs have succeeded with in the new era).

for a crappy team, it’s a big hit.

They are not physically over matched.

Bryce Young is so physically overmatched it’s pretty unreal.

He will never be a starter ever again in the league and IMO…..will be out of the league inside 2 more years…..I mean he literally looks like a high school QB who is a 16 year old sophomore in comparison to everyone around him.

He is a shining example of a great college QB who simply could not make the transition.

I saw this right away in his rookie year.

I wouldn't be opposed to Miami taking a flier if Tua is unlikely to return. Rams would make a ton of sense too.

Alex Smith was also left for dead and ended up having a very good career.

I do wonder what the price would be for Carolina at this point. Sunk cost fallacy and all. A 3rd?

Would he have to jump when he passes? I mean, how tall are the Miami offensive line? :)

Yep Alex Smith is another one.

Speaking of Miami, Tua was once benched as well. I actually considered them as well as one of the possible key landing spots if Carolina decides to move on and they actually make sense for an in-season trade if Carolina got to that point, which I don't think they are close to yet. I can't believe Miami has only brought in Huntley and called it a day.

I will say again Bryce Young is playing horrendous right now and his issues are bigger then the less then inspiring cast, it's on him right now and I absolutely expect to see Dalton running a much better offense this week, I just will continue to believe Bryce is fixable.

The worst thing for Bryce Young is if Andy Dalton looks good. It would tank his trade value and it would make it hard to go back to him.
