QB Bryce Young, CAR (1 Viewer)

I might be getting out over my skis here a bit, but I think Young will be impactful from Day 1.

I know his weapons leave something to be desired but I just think he's the type of guy to figure it out, and do it early.

I came into rookie draft season without much fanfare. I'm a huge fan at this point. I can't ignore what he's done at Bama, the 1.01 draft capital, and what I hear in interviews. Young is a smooth operator. He might surprise us when all is said and done.

Panthers signed No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young to a four-year, $38 million contract.

As is the case with all first-round picks, Young’s deal is fully guaranteed. It also includes a fifth-year team option. Young enters the league as NFL-ready as a rookie can get. Panthers HC Frank Reich also noted that Young “showed complete command” of the offense in OTAs. Though the staff may attempt to play up a camp battle between Andy Dalton and Young, it’s safe to call that noise and bet on Young to take the team’s first snap under center year.

Thoughts on his redraft/dynasty value?

Have to expect he'll struggle to put up solid fantasy stats in year 1 given typical rookie struggles plus not exactly the best WR talent around him. Longer term, have to figure they'll get some more weapons for him next year, although I wonder if he'll end up being a much better NFL QB than a fantasy one. Just don't see a bombs away approach as long as Reich is at the helm.

Reich coached under Andy Reid, who wasn’t exactly the bastion of ground & pound. Plus, in Indy, Reich could rely on JT rather than the by-then-noodle-armed-QB’s he had. And the CAR WR situation doesn’t scream disaster to me — the vet WR’s may not scare anyone, but the fact they’re vets means the offensive coaches don’t need to slow roll for a reputed NFL- ready-QB. I’m not predicting an MVP season for Bryce, but I think he (and CAR) are going to surprise some folks.

To answer your original question: low 20’s TD’s his rookie year. Dynasty question really does depend on how he physically holds up — the fact that he is undersized means you could also get him at a bargain.

Fair points. I also like the fact that he's not a pure pocket passer and will give some rushing equity, although certainly nowhere along the lines of the Allens, Fields, Lamars (and Richardsons) of the world.

I think this is the answer - but that doesn’t mean he can’t have any fantasy value.

I could see him needing to run more than he did in college due to being flushed out of the pocket more than at Bama. Don’t expect big rushing yards or designed runs so his fantasy upside requires big passing stats. Can’t expect that yet.

Agreed. Fantasy wise, I'm taking Richardson all day long. NFL-wise, give me Young.

Panthers coach Frank Reich named No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young the team’s starting quarterback.

This hardly counts as news, but it’s nice to know Reich won’t even flirt with giving Andy Dalton a shot at seeing the field in Week 1. Young opened training camp with a strong showing including a perfectly-placed deep shot to D.J. Chark. Though it’s hard to expect much from a rookie quarterback for fantasy purposes, Young is as NFL-ready as they come, so he should have some QB2 juice in 2023.

What happened today will put the kibosh on the budding fantasy talk regarding Young. Or at least it should. As I answered in another thread, that was the Jets B squad playing the Carolina 1s, and Carolina couldn't do anything with their drives in the first while their starters were in. Jets sat three starting DL, both starting LBs, and their entire secondary.

That's. . . 27-0 and no bueno for Carolina or Young.

But they'll get better, one hopes. Working out the kinks and all, maybe. Or maybe not.

The kid's clearly got some long-term potential, but even in Superflex leagues he's going to be tough to rely upon at all this year. Dynasty is a different a story, of course.

Bryce Young completed 20-of-38 passes for 146 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions in his Week 1 debut vs Atlanta.

Young averaged just 3.8 YPA, with the rookie targeting TE Hayden Hurst (7) and RB Miles Sanders (6) on checkdowns. He didn’t have a ton of success in the run game, rushing three times for 17 yards. Young was playing without WR DJ Chark, but this wasn’t a great debut, with his only score coming on a four-yard pass to Hurst. Young should get some help with Chark expected back vs the Saints in Week 2.

Bryce Young completed 22-of-33 passes for 153 yards and a touchdown in the Panthers’ 20-17, Week 2 loss to the Saints.

Young also added a pair of rushes for 34 yards. Though the scoreboard says Carolina lost by a small margin, it wasn’t a particularly close game. The Saints defense sat in prevent coverage on Carolina’s final drive, allowing Young to march down the field and find Adam Thielen for a touchdown. He also connected with Thielen for a two-point conversion. A failed onside kick ended the Panthers’ hopes of a miraculous comeback. Young struggled to diagnose pressure and couldn’t build any chemistry with his receivers outside of the 33-year-old Thielen. Young is only worth rostering in Superflex leagues as the Panthers head to Seattle for Week 3.

ESPN reports the Panthers can’t use Bryce Young for quarterback sneaks because he’s too small.

At 5'10" and 204 pounds, Young “just isn’t big enough to make that work. Plus, he doesn’t have experience at it,” ESPN’s David Newton said. The Panthers have had to bring in Andy Dalton to take the QB sneak opportunities through Week 2. Not being able to use Young on sneaks “could be an issue moving forward” for a struggling Carolina offense, Newton said. Young remains a superflex-only option in the run-first Panthers offense.

Bryce Young (ankle) did not practice Wednesday.
It’s a surprising development for the rookie quarterback. He played on Monday and was on the field for Carolina’s final snap on offense, so there was no indication of an injury when the final whistle blew. He did, however, cede a short-yardage snap to backup quarterback Andy Dalton. Young left the field for Dalton on another snap but the play was eventually nixed by a pre-snap penalty in favor of a punt. If Young can’t suit up for Week 3, Dalton will draw the start against the Seahawks. All Panthers will be easy fades in a road game with a backup quarterback under center.

Bryce Young (ankle) did not practice on Thursday.

Young has now missed two-straight practices to open the week and is at serious of missing the Panthers’ Week 3 matchup against the Seahawks. Young played throughout the duration of the Panthers’ Week 2 loss against the Saints on Monday night, making his ankle injury and the potential severity of it a bit surprising. Assuming Young is unable to go, the Panthers will look to Andy Dalton in a spot start. He’d be going up against a Seahawks defense that’s allowed the third-most passing yards, but the Panthers offense has also struggled to move the ball through the air as well. There are probably better options than Dalton in 1QB leagues, but he could have some 2QB/superflex appeal.

The Athletic’s Joe Person reports Bryce Young (ankle) could miss Week 4.

Young, who hasn’t practiced this week, has already been ruled out for Week 3 against the Seahawks. Person said the Panthers don’t expect Young to miss more than two games, which could include Carolina’s Week 4 matchup against the Vikings. Person said no one knows when Young hurt his ankle in the team’s Week 2 loss to the Saints, but Young apparently played through the injury in the second half. Andy Dalton will be under center for the Panthers until Young recovers.

I expect the Panthers' offensive production to improve slightly with Dalton. If he can hit some downfield throws the ground heavy scheme should work a bit better. No one is scared of Bryce at QB right now.
