QB Caleb Williams, CHI (5 Viewers)

Praised him last night and it was deserved for a couple of those throws. Obviously temper those expectations because it's pre-season AND that first drive was completely scripted. Or at least I expect it was. They had worked on those plays specifically in that order in practice.

Still had the running around play where he's rolling right after getting flushed and throws it back against his body toward the middle of the field. No. Throw that out of bounds. Then had the swing pass to the RB, which was clearly first read on the play, but it wasn't open and he about got the kid killed or could have been a pick 6. Just no.
I recognize memory is much more flawed that people are willing to admit, with that in mind I don't remember it that way at all.

On the first one; he got flushed to his right and put the ball right of the hash in a spot where only his receiver had a shot at it. I thought the biggest problem was the pass was about 6" low from being a completion.

And the screen pass was blown up from the jump, there were defenders all around the RB and in the backfield, there was no second read. He wisely threw the ball in the dirt in the general direction of the RB. No one "almost got killed".

Again, that's my recollection of those two plays. I need to find a video of every Williams pass, not just the highlight reels I have come up with so far.
He had 4 incompletions. Those two, one to Rome and the 4th was a broken play where he tried to hit the RB in the flat/slightly down field. That ball was his only real bad throw of the night. To a pass catching RB, its not a murder ball. To a non- pass-catching one it wasn't great.

Then they get to travel to Detroit for week 2
I think those first couple games will be very telling if where he's at on his NFL trajectory
Is he basically a rookie all over again and we give him a pass for last season and two different head coaches? This year it's HC #3
I gotta see it live during the season, my expectations are we will see growth in spurts but also see some of the things we didn't like last season
Work in progress, would not expect a Jared Goff like metamorphosis in year 2, it's gonna take some time

Glad he attracted better headlines this past weekend
I don't love the narrative that Williams needs a pass for last season. He wasn't terrible, he looked like a rookie. He still completed 63.5% of his passes with a 20/6 TD/INT ratio.

He made bad rookie, off script plays at times but, as Greg Olson pointed out last night he also had the highest % of unblocked defenders in the backfield in the league. He was definitely responsible for a bunch of sacks but he got less help from his OC and OL than most teams in the league.

He looked like a rookie and I think we judge him this poorly because 1) Jayden Daniels looked so amazing by comparison and 2) Williams is easy for some people to dislike for, almost entirely non football reasons.
Agreed would also add people tend to like to see people/teams at the top fail. Caleb had very high expectations as the next big thing, so that in addition to some of the non football stuff that seemed to be mostly blown out of proportion.

Thanks, I was referring to the broken screen pass. My bad.

You ought to check in with Keenan Allen on his thoughts about Williams. Unless of course he’s not a valid source in your opinion.
Keenan Allen has consistently expressed high praise for Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, emphasizing his athleticism, football IQ, and confidence. As of December 2024, Allen stated that Williams' potential is "through the roof" and that his confidence is "through the roof," indicating a strong belief in the rookie quarterback's ability to lead the team. Allen also confirmed his desire to return to the Bears for the 2025 season, citing his belief in Williams and the team's direction as key reasons.

  • Allen praised Williams' athletic ability and playmaking skills, calling him "a hell of an athlete" who can make significant plays with both his feet and arm, and noting that he "looks like he knows the game really well and he’s really good".
  • He highlighted the strong connection and rapport he has developed with Williams, describing their relationship as comfortable and built on mutual respect, with shared activities like playing video games and cards during the offseason.
  • Allen has stated that he is confident in Williams' readiness to play at a high level, noting that Williams has always been the expected starter, unlike previous rookie quarterbacks he's played with.
  • His comments, made both before and after Williams' debut, reflect a strong belief in Williams' potential and a commitment to helping him succeed, which is seen as a significant vote of confidence in the Bears' quarterback situation.

That is clearly evident in a segment of posters on this thread.
I did say I was happy for him this past weekend when I closed my post, hope I'm not being tossed into that segment ye speak of
Oh god, no. I was referring to the "HE PAINTS HIS NAILS!!!1111oneoneone" crowd. As always, I appreciate and value your opinion.

That’s what he was saying when he was a teammate and being supportive. You haven’t seen his recent comments obviously.
You know those were fake comments, right? Did the mention of painted fingernails not give that away?

I picked it up from a NFL information site, but maybe they got fooled as well. The best satire sounds plausible.

Oh, and to IDWT: Just because there’s reference to nail painting by guys doesn’t make it any kind of homophobic. I don’t know this for a fact but am willing to bet that there are enough homosexual guys who are adverse to painting their nails.

They host the Vikings on Monday Night Football - Week 1
Then they get to travel to Detroit for week 2
I think those first couple games will be very telling if where he's at on his NFL trajectory
Is he basically a rookie all over again and we give him a pass for last season and two different head coaches? This year it's HC #3
I gotta see it live during the season, my expectations are we will see growth in spurts but also see some of the things we didn't like last season

Oh lawd, what would the discussion be if Justin Fields had thrown that many passes in rhythm in one preseason game?

Or... one regular season game?

Or....a season?

Yeah: What would the talk be about Justin Fields if he had thrown--in one season--as many on-time passes as Caleb threw in two preseason series?

We'd probably be talking about how Flus still sucks. :ROFLMAO:

Looked like a #1 pick.
Didn't see the game but looking at the box score the #2 QB was just as efficient. Was this an indication of Buffalo's #2 D or did Williams pass the eye test?
What I thought was encouraging was the play calls. I thought the first? TD WR route was a nice way to free of the WR.
It's refreshing to see innovative play calling, isn't it? Also my assumption that this is the vanilla version of the offense is getting me pretty excited.
Its refreshing to see the makings of a potential NFL caliber OL

We didn’t run WR screens every play. Already a step in the right direction!

oh its not just that. lots of people are expecting rookie QB to come in and throw for 4000+ yards in their rookie year.

the reality is it rarely happens.

when you consider that the Bears O line was not actually that good last year, that makes his performance reasonably impressive.

He wasnt THAT bad. As you mentioned.... he looked like a rookie. you know why? because he was a rookie.

if he put up those numbers in his second or third year, Id be considerably more concerned. but as far as rookie seasons go, he wasnt bad at all. The big thing is he didnt throw a lot of INT. He had moments where he looked dangerous, and moments where he looked like he had the potential to be dangerous and wasnt able to deliver. But he will learn from this experience and will be better next year. How much better I cannot say exactly but I do think they will open up the offense a bit more and we will see more of what made him the #1 overall pick.

I also like the fact that the team looked like they made a real good attempt to fix that leaky line. I think that by itself should work out to some better numbers for him as he will have more time to throw. And the fact hes got some experience under his belt at the NFL level will probably mean his decision making will be a little faster too. The combination should result in a better offense. and Im not even taking into account the New offensive system which I suspect will help as well.

There are people out there who are in a panic over this. but not all qb break out in their rookie year. Brady didnt. Elway didnt. in fact Elway looked far worse in his rookie year than Caleb did. and he turned out just fine.

I'm not about to predict an Elway or Brady type career (not yet anyways) but Im suggesting we are passing judgement too soon on this young man. I'm saying... lets wait and see what he does in year 2.

There's fine line between judging too soon vs too late. If you wait to judge then you might end up holding the bag. What about now tho? If you trade him right now you get out for roughly what you paid. In this way, it could be a good thing to judge too soon.

That's the game we're playing, form your opinion of someone's value and then compare with market value and adjust or draft your team accordingly.

That's easier said that done in the NFL. Given that MAYBE 2-3 college QBs from any given year will even get the chance to play at the next level, it's often more important to develop the guys you've got, watch them progress, and not cut bait so soon. In fantasy football, yes, that's the way it works.

Here's the list of names of QBs that show up below Caleb

This is true. Nobody wants to be the Browns watching Baker Mayfield play like he's playing for Tampa Bay or the Jets watchimg Sam Darnold in Minnesota.

Caleb to the moon. So much hate - people just want to be right and say "see I told you he sucked".

Now, Parsons to GB is not great for that division and the QBs. Oof.

I think he's going to be good and have been trying to trade for him in dynasty since November of last year. Offered 2026 1st (likely to be early) and Love. Owner kept pushing for my Burrow share and offered to add in peanuts. As much as I like Caleb I'm not doing that haha. Been debating a 26 and 27 1st, but it would be the absolute ceiling I'd offer and I have a feeling it would turn into a negotiation where he pushes for more (this owners style) and I just don't want to put up with it. Plus my team is very young and even my 2027 pick is likely to be early to mid 1st. Still, the fact it's tempting me says I'm a Caleb believer.

I've taken him once in a redraft, and would have more shares, but it's just a value proposition. Caleb is hard to take 9/10 compared to who is still on the board when I know I can get TLaw 12/13 when the rest of the board is much less appealing.

Love + 1st is fair IMO - I wouldn't pay more and I do like Caleb. I think even at that you are paying for what he could be and I do think he can hit it. Ride Love for now - he should do well too.

I like Caleb but I wouldn't overpay much more thank you already are.

Love and a first may even be a bit of an overpay. Love is a QB i actually expect to have a better year this season. However, Id argue calebs upside may make that deal worth it. but this is literally (in my opinion) the best you'll do for him if you make the deal

if he's performing and the offense is scoring points, winning games, I dont think his teammates will hang up about his manicured hands.

Agreed. But what if he's not performing? Do these things make the situation worse? I suspect they do in an NFL locker room... Even in 2025.

Caleb's propensity to take sacks dates back to his college days. If Ben Johnson can't solve for that, this dude will never live up to #1 overall expectation, pink nails or clear coat or not. Also doesn't help when the QBs drafted after him in that class are kicking ***.
when I played I didnt give a rats *ss how someone dressed or whether they had manicured hands.

I care that they play well and as a QB I care that the ball ends up where its supposed to be. all this other stuff is fluff.

Drafted him in one keeper league last year in a start 1 QB league. Only used him a couple weeks. Have Love also, and Nix on my taxi squad. Don't absolutely need him to hit this year but hopeful he's a clear set and forget starter next year so I can move him or Nix.

In another keeper league, 10 team 2 QB I am rebuilding and took him as my hopeful cornerstone QB for the next 3 years.

Good luck to us all. A lot of history needs to be defied, but they're due right? Hehe

The Bears still suck

If you trade him right now you get out for roughly what you paid. In this way, it could be a good thing to judge too soon.
Selling now won't get you back what you paid for him. In SF leagues people paid a ransom to get that first pick sure thing. Williams would need to throw for 4000+ yds and 35 TD while running for another 500 and 4 or 5 TD's to get back to original "value"

He's worth a 2025 1.03-1.04 right now according to fantasycalc. So he's lost a little value from where he was drafted.

Agreed. If you drafted or just simply own Williams he is a strong hold. Let the tempo and magic of Ben Johnson increase his value. I believe.

Sure but a lot more for what it took to acquire that pick if you didn't already have it.

I’m all in on Caleb, and will eat crow if he doesn’t turn out to be great. If the 2024 draft happened today, I’d still take him #1.

Over Daniels? C'mon.....personality alone favors Daniels by a mile. You'd take mercurial, moody and all the family baggage over the magnanimous, gregarious, fun-loving Daniels? That is asinine. There isn't one GM, coach or owner who would agree with this and I include Chicago here too.

Perhaps. Jayden may end up being the better player long term, and it’s fair to point out that the last can’t miss QB prior to Caleb (TLawrence) is proving to be a miss.

In fairness, things couldn’t have gone better for Daniels last year. I suspect we’ll see some regression. I believe we saw Caleb’s floor last year and we’ll see why many analysts said he was the best prospect since Luck moving forward.

I'm bullish on Williams too and think his future is bright.

But I think Daniels is HIM.

I just think between the ears, Caleb has some major growing and development to do to catch Daniels, Maye and Nix. All four went to horrible teams. Nix and Daniels made the playoffs. Maye got a late start but was impressive. Williams got his coach fired and another season like 2024 and the GM is gone too.

Stated like that, of course you take Daniels. More importantly, after what we saw last season on the field, of course you take Daniels and that was the only point you needed to make.

On the personality front, the reality is we have no real idea who these guys are behind the scenes.

FWIW 1) Caleb seemed like a good dude on Hard Knocks. & 2) trying to engineer his landing spot is probably really appreciated in the locker room.

Gonna go out on a limb and say that all players would like much more say in where they get to play.

Dude......

If you asked two players in 2023 which organization they'd rather play for, Chicago or Washington, how many are picking the latter? That franchise was an abortion since Joe Gibbs left the 2nd time.

I like Caleb Williams quite a bit but his displayed personality underscores many troubling factors. Factor in his over bearing father and it is an easy decision for me to make on who I prefer to lead my franchise.

Think the coach got himself fired.

Did the QB improve after he was fired?
