QB Cam Newton, CAR (1 Viewer)

Arron Rogers ball placement allowed Jones to be a great WR in Green Bay. They were always on the same page when it comes to back shoulder throws, fades and slants. I can't imagine he will be as effective with any other QB.

My guess is the conversation went like this....

Gettleman - Hakeem, I know we have a history from New York and I'd like to have you in Carolina. I am a bit concerned about your work ethic however, so I'm willing to make you a deal. I'll sign you to a one year offer at 2.5 million to give you an opportunity to show that you're willing to put forth the effort to return to your previous level. If you play hard and do the right things, we can talk about a longer deal next year. You're going to have a shot to be the #1 here and if you play well, the big offers will be there from a number of teams, likely including us.

Nicks - The Colts offered me 3.5 million. That's more than what you're offering.

Gettleman - That sounds like a good deal and it's more than we can offer. You should take it if you're just concerned about getting paid the most this year.

Nicks - Sounds good! I'll do that.

Actually from a FF POV I think Cotchery might be a nice fit in CAR, if he's there along with a real WR1.

I still believe in Jones and I think he can be very productive, but there's absolutely no reason the Panthers shouldn't have had him in by now.

Cross Jones off the list

@AdamSchefter: Raiders giving former Packers WR James Jones a three-year deal.

@AdamSchefter: With former Packers WR James Jones now a Raider, it leaves Panthers in a challenging veteran-WR-less spot.

Well i guess there is still britt and holmes. Im not even a panthers fan and im pissed.

Manningham, Crochery and Austin are still out there. Along with Holmes. It's hard to believe this is where we are.

Manningham sign with g-men 1yr
Makes sense for him and the Giants. He's a depth guy anyways so he wouldn't really help the Panthers anyways. There isn't really anybody left for the Panthers to go after unless they hit the trade market.

Glad I was too lazy to drop my Manningham jersey off to Goodwill.

None of this bodes well for Cam. Does Carolina just think WRs are overrated? Because they aren't.
Clearly their master plan is to land a couple more RBs in the draft and just split two or three of them out wide every play.

Seriously: what is going on in that front office? They're a 12-win team with a dominant QB heading into his prime, fer Chrissakes, and they're acting like they just went 2-14 and are clearing the decks.

Cam Newton will undergo ankle surgery on Wednesday and will be sidelined four months.
Newton battled an ankle injury at the end of the regular season and into the playoffs. Team doctor Robert Anderson is a renowned foot and ankle specialist and will perform the operation in Charlotte. Per beat writer Joe Person, the goal of the surgery is to "tighten up the ligaments" in Newton's ankle. Newton should be ready to roll for the start of training camp. With an entirely new receiving corps on tap for Carolina, he can't afford to miss much time.

Cam Newton makes my early bust list

You can add Cam Newton to the list of players I won't draft this summer.

The Panthers announced that Newton would have offseason ankle surgery and be sidelined four months. That puts him on track to be ready for training camp if (and only if) he's on-time in his recovery.

When he does come back, he'll play behind an offensive line that isn't very strong upon first glance. Left tackle Jordan Gross was one of two linemen who retired and have yet to be replaced. Center Ryan Kalil is pretty much the only established quality starter they have left.

But that's good compared to Carolina's receiving corps: Each of their top four receivers from last year are no longer on the team. If the season started today the Panthers would line up with Marvin McNutt and Tavarres King at receiver. I'll admit that King has some minimal appeal but I've seen McNutt and can't see the Panthers reliably leaning on him.

This wouldn't be a problem if the Panthers attacked free agency but they whiffed on Hakeem Nicks, among others. They could consider someone out there like Santonio Holmes or Kenny Britt but it's not like they have a ton of cap room -- they're sitting on just under $8 million as of Tuesday. And those receivers kind of make me ill.

The Saints and Bucs' defenses have improved already, as have opponents in the NFC North and AFC North, each of whom will take on the Panthers in 2014. So will the champion Seahawks and the Eagles, respective division winners.

It could be a long year in Carolina and a longer year for Cam Newton.

Keeping Cam is shaping up to be a tough decision for me. What a terrible offseason for his FF and RL prospects.
I was looking at the WR depth chart for the Panthers and I have never seen such a putrid group this late in Free Agency in a while. :X

King

McNutt

Pilares

Brockel

Bersin

Zordich

Clemons

Pilares has over a hundred yards and Clemons has a TD.

It's not like they've never done anything.

Cam Newton has ankle surgeryBy David Newton | ESPN.com

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton underwent surgery on Wednesday afternoon to repair ligament damage in his left ankle.

The full recovery process is four months, which would take Newton until the start of training camp. However, he could be freed to throw on a limited basis before then.

"Dr. (Robert) Anderson did not find anything unexpected in the procedure and the surgery went well," Carolina head athletic trainer Ryan Vermillion said in a statement.

Newton nicked his ankle in a Week 16 victory against the New Orleans Saints, but played in the regular-season finale at Atlanta and in the NFC divisional playoff loss against San Francisco without noticeable issue.

The team hoped rest would heal the injury, but soreness persisted and it was decided to address it now so Newton would be ready for camp and not miss any games.

Newton will miss much of the offseason workouts and valuable time throwing to a new corps of wide receivers, after the team released Steve Smith and watched three others leave via free agency.

ESPN's Stephania Bell, a board-certified orthopedic clinical specialist, said Newton's effectiveness as a runner shouldn't be impacted by the surgery.

"In fact, regaining full motion and strength are far more important in the early phase than full-speed running," she wrote in her blog Wednesday.

Carolina has two other quarterbacks on its roster -- recently re-signed backup Derek Anderson and Matt Blanchard, an undrafted player who was signed to the practice squad in October.

One thing is clear, Carolina wanted to start over at WR. We will see how long it takes Cam to gel with the new guys, whoever they are, and also recover from surgery. I expect a step back next season from this one.

Cam Newton (ankle surgery) has shed his walking boot.
Newton underwent surgery to strengthen his left ankle ligaments in late March. He's not expected to resume practicing before training camp, but he's progressing right on schedule. Newton's health is not a concern for the 2014 season.

Given the state of the Panthers' offensive line, he may want to leave that boot on for, say, the next 9 months.....

Rotoworld:

Cam Newton (ankle surgery) is throwing on the side during this week's OTAs.

Newton is just over two months removed from a procedure designed to strengthen the ligaments around his left ankle. He's expected to participate more during next month's minicamp. Newton's unique running ability is not threatened at all by this surgery. In fact, his burst and "push-off" could emerge stronger.

Rivera said he may be able to participate in mini-camp.

Rotoworld:

Cam Newton (ankle) did three-, five- and seven-step drops during Tuesday's minicamp practice.

Newton was spotted digging his right ankle hard into the ground and then planting with his surgically repaired left ankle. It confirms that he's nearly healed from the procedure designed to tighten the ligaments in the joint. Newton is going to need plenty of strength in his legs as he operates with a bottom-five offensive line and bottom-five receiving corps.

Yeah they aren't going to let him do much in mini-camp for cautions sake. But he should be ready come training camp. As for the bottom 5 stuff time will tell.

You do realize that he really hasn't had weapons the last 2 years and finished as qb 6 last year and qb5 the year before?

Cam Newton - QB - Panthers
Cam Newton (ankle surgery) has been fully cleared for training camp.
Newton did 7-on-7 work during OTAs, planting with his right foot and looking near 100 percent. He's not expected to be too limited during camp. The procedure was designed to tighten some ligaments in his ankle, alleviating some pain and giving him more power off cuts. Newton, who has played in all 16 games in each of his three NFL seasons, is not an injury risk.

Rotoworld:

FOX's Alex Marvez expects Cam Newton's rushing numbers to decline again this season.

Marvez made the statement after interviewing Cam. During that chat, Newton admitted he's "still kind of reluctant with mobility" as he comes off ankle surgery and has not been scrambling at all in practice. Still, there's a month to go before Week 1 and the surgery was designed to strengthen Newton's ankle. A physically dominant freak, his rushing floor isn't much lower than the career-lows he set last season in attempts (111), yards (585), YPC (5.27) and touchdowns (6).

You saw his rushing floor last year. IMO he is going at a discount now. Three seasons never finished out of the top 5....I'll scoop him up in the 7th/8th all day long

Rotoworld:

Cam Newton - QB - Panthers

Cam Newton described the lingering pain in his ankle as a "thump" when he moves on it incorrectly.

It's entirely possible Newton's surgically repaired ankle will be forgotten once the games start. It's also possible that these are legitimate red flags. "It’s like a thump from your mom when you said something that you weren’t supposed to," described Cam. "She’ll thump you dead in your ear or on your head. It’ll hurt for that little second but it’ll go away after 2-3 minutes. It’s a reminder that, hey, you better check yourself." Newton's ADP -- currently in the late-seventh round -- has fallen enough that we believe he's well worth the perceived risk. Cam drafters may want to secure a QB2 a bit earlier than usual, however.
