QB Carson Wentz, KC (2 Viewers)

Don’t disagree. But he’s been better in the past. I believe the expectation from the colts in acquiring him aligns with my own.
I’m sure they thought that. I’m just trying to think of a case where a veteran QB played that badly for a full season and then turned it around and became a good QB the following year.

Kurt Warners season with the Giants comes to mind but did not check the stats so I’m not sure

NFL is a team sport
Sure but the QB has the greatest impact on the team. We’ve seen plenty of good QBs play well on really bad teams. We’ve also seen bad QBs unable to perform even when placed in ideal situations. I know things were bad around Wentz last year but Wentz made them worse.

Mr. Andrew Luck, please pickup the white courtesy phone in the hotel lobby.

Wouldn't it be more realistic to maybe talk Rivers into another season?

This is starting to sound like a potential lisfranc injury. If it is, he's almost a lock to miss regular season time, maybe a lot of it. Jacob Eason, in my opinion, is highly unlikely to be the starting QB in that case, and they'll have to add somebody. Nick Foles makes sense, given his history with Reich and availability, would the Jags deal Minshew in division? Maybe Mariota?

It was really weird to me that Carson Wentz was viewed as a great addition, and people crapped on Jared Goff, when Goff has been the better player for like 3 years now, pretty much since Wentz hurt his knee.

Eli Manning had an awful year in 2013, and came back and had 2 of the best years of his career in 2014 and 2015. Of course he notably had Odell Beckham added to the team, so that may not be the greatest example.

I don't want Rivers.  I'd rather have Eason.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Carson Wentz's foot injury is "not expected to be season-ending."

Wentz is visiting with a specialist before determining the next steps. The Colts have already ruled him out for the rest of the preseason and are bracing for surgery. Wentz, who has both bone and ligament damage, is very likely looking at an extended absence. Second-year QB Jacob Eason took over the first team offense with Wentz sidelined and could open the season as the Colts' starter.

I'll say trade for Marcus Mariota, as long as we're throwing out wild replacement ideas.

Eta- it's hilarious that this guy is still screwing the eagles, somehow. That conditional 1st is looking pretty iffy.

They really should be on the phone with SF for JimmyG.

Good OL, great receiving weapons, RB depth, couple decent TEs. JimmyG would be a terrific fill-in.

I can’t believe he got hurt this bad on the 3rd day of practice. Couldn’t even make it to preseason. Incredible.

I don't think they could afford him. No way SF is giving him up cheap, and Indy has no 2nd rounder. They'd be nuts to offer a 1st, and SF likely isn't taking a 3.

Seems like an ideal place to send Nick Foles to fill in for a few weeks that Wentz is out.
To be honest, I think Foles is every bit as good as Garoppolo, and is far cheaper to acquire since he's the Bears #3 QB. On top of that, he's already played for Reich.

The smartest play in my opinion would be Mariota. In my opinion, he's a better(or at least more salvageable) QB than Wentz was. Other than 2017, he's always been a decent QB in my opinion. I bet he could be had for a 3rd rounder. There is nobody they can get that is going to be as good as Rivers was.

The more I look at this injury to Wentz, the more it really sounds like a Lisfranc. Fits too with how that Colts have a long history of QB injury dishonesty, from Manning's neck to several of Luck's injuries. Good chance Wentz is on IR in a few days in my opinion.

Yes, the fact they are getting it looked at by Anderson means it’s something serious as they’re own doctors have already looked at it. Seems like it is headed for surgery and IR as you are thinking.

Eason >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Mariota.

And I have no idea who Eason is.

100% disagree.  Hell, I'd argue Mariota>Wentz.

Eason was a 2020 4th rounder, who honestly probably should have gone later than that. He's got great size(6-6, 230) and a good arm, but he is bad at reading defenses and was terrified of being hit. Jake Fromm ran him out of Georgia and to Washington.

If I had to make a comparison to somebody, it might be Mike Glennon or Brock Osweiler. If the Colts end up going with Eason as the starter, I'd feel pretty comfortable just giving the Titans the AFC South. Though, he might make Jonathan Taylor a 300+ carry RB, and that is with Hines+Mack still involved.

I thought they were taking a big risk having him as the backup this season, and they are in real trouble now. Hell, Brian Hoyer would be a better option in my opinion. Hopefully for the Colts(and Eagles) sake, Wentz isn't hurt as bad as it sounds, but it sounds really bad.

No way the Raiders are giving up Mariotta for anything less than a drastic overpay.  Gruden is in win-now and not trading any piece he thinks can contribute.

Also no way they put him on IR before the season starts (edit: unless of course it's a season-ender), he'd be ineligible to return at all.  They have to wait until the day after final cuts to do that, and even then he misses 8 weeks minimum.

Plus Gru got a taste of why they need MM when Carr pulled his groin last year.

Mariotta isn’t great, and he’s arguably not better than Carr, but he’s shown he can operate in that system if he’s needed & I don’t think they trust anyone behind him as a backup.

I very much doubt they’d deal MM away.

An interesting factoid for backup QBs on Colts roster before Hundley arrival… Eason, Elinger, and Morton have no nfl game experience pre-season or otherwise. I wonder if Brisette trade is a possibility since he has Colts game experience.

I thought Eason played some preseason games last year (and he wasn’t terrible) but maybe I’m thinking of someone else.
And trading to get Brissett back is something I don’t want to see.

Some chatter on 95.7 the game about a possible Garapolo to the Colts rumor following Lance showing well at practice.

Noting concrete - probably the Saturday hosts filling air time. But reportedly Rosen has looked good as well, so they could conceivably make JimmyG expendable.

I doubt it happens, but that’s what I heard so I’m relaying it here.

The preseason games were cancelled last year. And Morton was cut prior to season last year. And Elinger is a rookie. So this all adds up to zero nfl snaps for those three preseason or otherwise. I heard on a fantasy podcast that a doctor well known for predicting injury timelines has over/under at week 6 for a Wentz return. That is just enough games to potentially knock Colts out of playoffs if they don’t have a reasonable QB. As others have mentioned, Garappolo is difficult due to cap reasons. So Nick Foles or Jacoby Brissett seemed to make sense for lower cap cost trade targets given they have prior experience playing for Reich.

Should this be taken as good news or no?

@RapSheet

#Colts QB Carson Wentz plans to try to rest and rehab his foot injury over the next few days, source said, rather than have immediate surgery. If all goes well, Week 1 is in play. If it doesn’t improve, the answer may be surgery.

Was just coming to post that it might be the worst news since it drags it out for a little while.

Optimism says the specialist recommended this as the course of action, which is good news.

I struggle to believe the 2nd part is true, given the “if not, then surgery”. It sounds more like Wentz / Eagles we’re told there was a chance to avoid surgery and they’re trying a last resort towards that end.

If I were a betting man I’d put odds on this ending in surgery & that this decision delays the recovery period.
