I saw a couple tweets (I thought it was Barnwell but I am not sure) that said lower salary year 1 was common. Now it may not be to the extent of Watson's structured deal but having a low year 1 base salary is not uncommon.

His contract is unprecedented period.
But with respect to his low salary the first year of his deal as I've said a few times in this thread the Browns did the same thing with Amari's first year pay and the Dolphins did same thing with Tyreek. Both of them are making just over $1m base next year, just like Watson.

I posted early in the trade talks finally happening, that a team who got him was likely to do that (convert it to a $34m bonus and $1m salary) just to be able to fit him in cap-wise. And that Watson would jump at the opportunity to do it for the impact on suspended salary.
So doesn't surprise me at all it happened. Seeing him potentially skirt the penalty doesn't make me happy. But it's a legitimate contract move from the team's standpoint, that unfortunately has that effect.
That said, the thing that bothered me far, far more, was seeing Watson given a contract that blew away the previous amount of guaranteed money by 50%. The salary restructure, necessary but recognize it has bad optics. But throwing literally unprecedent money at him just... it reeks. It really does. I get they had to do it to get him. Based on basically every report, he's lying through his teeth when he says the contract had nothing to do with him picking Cleveland.
But that's the part that I find the most distasteful about the contract. Not the restructure but the feeling he was hugely rewarded as a result of horrible behavior as a person.

Every dumbdumb sports reporter did their best 2-3 days of SJW research online, to try and smash a hardhitting question. All of them threw at least one pitch, but no strikes.
I think the answer of the night was in re: to the counselling question. Again, asked under the guise of tricking an "obviously dumb QB" into admission he needs counselling for his actions. Denied.
I give credit to all 3 of the guys sitting up there. It didn't have to happen. I think under the circumstances, they could have said "we're just not doing one, to be sensitive to the situation". Instead all 3 sat up there and took the stone throws.

advantageous financially, I mean. w the 1M salary. no idea what he'd have to pay out, I just meant in terms of the NFL handing down a 2-4-6 game suspension, it'd be a huge hit next season.
as an aside, Im personally going to be completely avoiding all arguments/debates in this thread about innocence/guilt. We all stand somewhere, and none ofare are going o change their minds about a nuanced situation.
Any debate Ill partake in will be strictly football related. I'll drop news if it comes across my bird app, but won't get into a back and forth. It's worn thin for most of us, I assume.

we're like 1+ week deep and everyone's made their points. no one's budging. we all see what we want/prefer to see. until something actually comes down, the debate is dead, no?

I get why Browns fans are feeling super-defensive right now all over social media. I've been there. I think the Browns had a somewhat likeable image the past few seasons for neutrals, and part of that was due to Baker Mayfield's cute commercials and likable personality. Now, it seems all that goodwill is gone and they will be one of the more disliked teams in the league. But it will eventually pass and be forgotten.

I strongly disagree that it will eventually pass and be forgotten. Some might say that was the case for Big Ben, and it might be true on NFL network, but he's widely regarded as a piece of #### and why a lot of people didn't like the Steelers.
I actually appreciate listening to some of the Cleveland fans in this thread. I haven't hated an NFL team like this in years. Will be a ton of fun to root against them and laugh when they fail.

For me, the moral dilemma comes down to coercion. That is one question I know I'll never be privy to in this situation. The details of every encounter will never be disclosed to the public. In fact, I doubt exact dialogue is likely to be recalled at all. For that reason I don't feel comfortable rendering a judgment or opinion. Truth be told, I doubt the Browns can possibly know all the details, though certainly more than me. The best I can do is opine that "something happened" based on the filing of lawsuits, and even then, especially after this off-season of unlikely occurrences, I have to admit that that isn't 100% likely. My opinion is uninformed and unimportant.

I also got to thinking... What can we expect / ask from him going forward? Model citizen, at least as far as we will witness, right? So, is this about Crime and Punishment? Well, the GJ decided that there wasn't enough to warrant a charge, so no crime, per se. (At least from a legal standpoint) So, we're left with the question of his involvement in something ugly, the "remedy" for unseemly actions, and the question of future nastiness. The first, and probably the last, are done deals. The second is where judgment lies and (our) opinions vary. Personally, I give wide acceptance to CONSENTING adults, but I also realize that I'll never know the degree of same in this case.

“What to expect?” is a fair question. I’m certain that the expectation by the NFL, the Browns, and Watson‘s agent is that he will be a model citizen.
Time will tell if Watson will deliver on that. Unless of course this is all a massive conspiracy against Watson, in which case all of this should work out very well for all parties involved.

I have no idea the level of guilt but I would be surprised at no suspension at all given past suspensions handed down in previous instances. Then again it is the NFL and the one thing that is consistent has been their inconsistencies.
