QB Jared Goff, DET (2 Viewers)

Stafford would of had several playoff wins if he had Brad Holmes bringing in talent. You could probably take all the players drafted when Stafford was a player here and it would not match up to Holmes 2021 or 2023 drafts.

Stafford - 31 4QC and 38 GWD
0 Playoff wins
0 NFCCGs
No kidding? Stafford has ZERO playoff wins. Damn
I believe he was quoting Stafford's 12 year record with the Lions.
Yes, I was.
Ya. I should have clarified that I was kinda shocked that in 12 years with Lions he didn't squeak one playoff win.

3 road WC losses, two were blowouts, didn’t play well in any of them (2 turnovers, 3 turnovers, ineffective in another.) Beloved figure and a great face of the franchise player, but they didn’t know how to build a roster.

Your comment on not knowing how to build a roster triggered the thought of that costing them the one of the greatest RBs and one of the greatest WRs of all time to both retire early. They both had just had enough.

That’s fine, part of the story is what the franchise once was is not who they are today. This franchise treats its players well.

The early-to-mid career Goff is not the same quarterback he is now. He is tougher, smarter, and more resilient.

Obviously, Goff isn't as bad as he looked last night, but it should be evident to everyone he's a game manager. He'll still be a game manager if he happens to help the Lions win a Super Bowl. That said, Goff is a decent QB. At best, he's a stat-compiler due to having the most help in the league at his position.

Can Goff actually bring Detroit a title? Possibly, but not likely. He needs a productive running game or he'll be vulnerable against playoff Ds and top DCs like Spags. In their favor, the NFC hasn't been this weak in a long time. They SHOULD make the Bowl.

I think all Lions fans know Goff has some limitations as do all QBs not named Mahomes, Jackson and Burrow most of the time. Some QBs limitations are physical, most are not developing the mental mindset for the NFL game. Goff did not play good but had a tipped pass INT defender made a great play on first drive, arm hit from behind INT, and a meaningless hail mary. Had one where the DB made a good play and one really bad INT.

Can Goff bring a title? Who knows as that is elusive to 31 teams when all is said and done. All I know is Brad Holmes who right now is probably the best GM in the NFL thinks Goff gives the Lions the best chance to win in this window.
Goff might give the Lions their best chance right now. I’m not sure about the future.

Windows can close quickly so it’s ultimately yet to be determined if Goff is the best long-term solution and if he lives up to the contract because everything else seems to be in place.

Do you have similar concerns about the contracts of Josh Allen? Lamar? Burrow? Herbert?

Not Allen, Lamar, or Burrow. They're among the best of the best.

I don't know man. Goff has as many playoff wins as Allen & Burrow and three more than Lamar. He has a better playoff win% than Allen & Lamar. Been to more conference championship games than all of them. And he has been to as many Super Bowls as all three of them combined.

Those guys seem like stat compilers by comparison to Goff. They're essentially Vinny Testeverde in an easier passing era.

I haven't seen too many people compare Goff to guys like Allen/Lamar/Burrow except for Lions fans.

Goff is at least a tier below those guys. Their teams have a different problem than Detroit. They have to assemble talent around their top QBs...the Lions seem to have the surrounding talent, but need the QB. Getting the QB is the hardest part, but that said, getting surrounding talent isn't easy.

Holmes may or may not be right about Goff. He paid him like a top guy and if he, indeed, is a top QB, Detroit's chances of winning a title are very good. Holmes could be wrong, though. If so, the contract will hurt (which is my original premise of why pay him now when they could've waited, but I digress).

Are these imaginary friends? Because none of the Lions fans on this board have ever said that.
I've seen people refer to Goff as a top QB (plays like one, etc.). A top QB means a top QB (like some of the guys mentioned).

I get why Detroit fans are enamoured with Goff, though. No biggie.

So you’ve never seen anyone compare him to Josh Allen or Joe Burrow or Lamar Jackson?

You completely fabricated that out of whole cloth?

So he's not a top QB? I agree. Anyway, I just explained my reasoning. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to make the connection from 'a top QB' to Burrow and company (non-negotiable). And it's almost always Lions fans (kinda understandable).

BTW, all that still doesn't answer my original premise of why pay him now? I'm assuming Holmes believes he's a top QB. It's the only thing that makes sense. Time will tell...

QBs in the NFL are judged by wins and losses. Playoff wins have the most value.

Goff is underpaid.

Or Allen, Burrow and Lamar are overpaid.

Or both.

What you're doing is setting the premise where if Detroit doesn't win the Super Bowl you will proclaim that you were right about paying Goff.

And even if they do win it you will probably still proclaim you were right because of his supporting cast.

It's an obvious plot and an impossibly high bar. It makes it difficult to take your premise seriously.

In the process, he passed Bobby Layne for second place in franchise history in each respective category.

Holmes did not pay him like a top guy, he paid him what starting QBs on good teams get paid. That is what QBs make now. Prescott is making 10 million more a year as a second tier QB who has never won anything in 9 years. If Lions waited it would have cost more.

The team that should have waited a year was the Cowboys but you don`t have 100 posts in the Prescott thread. In fact you don`t even post about Prescott's contract. Prescott finally tried to run this year and tore his hammy off the bone, and as he is getting older he is heavier and less mobile.

We get it by now after 5 pages in the last year, you don`t like Goff. https://forums.footballguys.com/search/362591/?q=goff&c[users]=Football+Jones&o=relevance

No, I don't believe you get it.

What you're doing is setting the premise where if Detroit doesn't win the Super Bowl you will proclaim.tjat you were right about paying Goff.

And even if they do win it you will probably still proclaim you were right because of his supporting cast.

It's an obvious plot and an impossibly high bar. It makes it difficult to take your premise seriously.
My premise is VERY easy to understand.
As is mine.

BTW, I'm glad everyone agrees Goff isn't a top QB. At least we've made headway. That said, Goff plays like a top QB, he processes really fast, he's cool under pressure, he sets records, and a bunch of other stuff. Right? Got it, lol.

Classic "new guy in town" syndrome. That's not a bad thing, though. We need teams who have never done anything in the modern era to have their turn. It's what gives us new things to talk about. It's good for the NFL.

Goff is a good enough QB to win a SB. And he’s young. Besides Mahomes, Jackson, Allen, Burrow - who can you say that about with certainty? Dak - no. Tua - no. Lawrence - no. Murray - not for me. Carr - no. Herbert - I believe so but not proven. Love - still questions. Stroud - question mark. Daniels - too early but probable. Jones - he’ll no. Cousins - old. Stafford - old. Rodgers - old. Then a stream of journeymen. Smith, Darnold, Most of the rookie saviors have been disasters. Bryce, Caleb. Nix may turn out better than all of them but still a question mark. All that being said - teams can win with Goff. That’s all that matters. He’s not holding any team back. Not perfect - but he’s deserving of getting paid. Not top 4 money but some slot right after that. Certainly ahead of Lawrence

Agreed. Not very many elite QBs. The fact there's only a few high-end QBs means the NFL has a real problem with being too loose with their money when it comes to QBs. I'm sure lots of teams would like a do-over. It's an especially tough lesson to learn.

Goff's detractors will say he's being propped up by surrounding talent. If Holmes is right, they saved a little money, but big downside if he's wrong. The curious thing is they have a good QB prospect waiting in the wings which makes the decision to pay Goff that much more interesting. Could be a big topic of conversation this offseason depending on how the playoffs go.

Jared Goff produced his 10th fourth-quarter comeback and 11th game-winning drive for the Lions.

In the process, he passed Bobby Layne for second place in franchise history in each respective category.

(will never catch Stafford - 31 4QC and 38 GWD.)

them out.

**I'll stick to thread topic now**

Lets nutshell it Football Jones thinks Goff is a mid tier QB that the Lions should have waited until he was a UFA to try and resign. Thats it.I get it.

I might do 100 more posts depending on how this thread develops. You're certainly still invested.

Anyway, Goff's contract is one of the more interesting things that went down this past offseason. Waiting until next offseason may very well have been the smart move, especially with Hooker in tow. Or maybe Holmes made the right call. Like many things NFL right now, the correct answer is yet to be determined. Holmes may or may not have F-d up. He's been good so far so we'll see.

I read and listen to Lions beat writers who some were thinking the Lions should add a decent backup at the trade deadline as Hooker looks as raw as sashimi.

I wonder what Detroits record would be without Goff this year and last year…
Good question.

Detroit will have an interesting decision after the '26 season when Hook is a FA (assuming him or Goff isn't traded). It could be a rather easy decision (going either way).
The unknown is always tough to project, but right now most Lions fans are thrilled with their teams success and not focused on where Goff ranks regarding consensus quarterback rankings.

We know.

Prediction:

Lions don't win the Super Bowl = 100+ posts

Lions win the Super Bowl = Zero posts
LOL. Rubbing it in really wouldn't interest me other than maybe commenting on what went wrong, but if that happens, there'll be a lot of other people commenting on that topic, as well.

I've already said I'd give Goff his props if he managed to win a Super Bowl. I believe my exact quote was "it's possible, but not likely".

I have LaPorta and Gibbs on my FF teams, and Monty on another so I watch the Lions as much as I can. If Goff went down instead of Hutch they would not be a 500 team. Is Goff a great QB? No, Goff is a very good QB..but he is great at what he is doing in Detroit system that's for sure. They are like 29-6 in the last 35 games.

Plus he has the locker room, the team loves him. In the NFL that is huge.

If he doesn't win the Super Bowl FBG is going to need a bigger server farm.

Nah. What would be the point other than a few posts about what went wrong? That said, if I keep getting engaged, then yeah, I could see me posting more about it.
