QB Jayden Daniels, WAS (7 Viewers)

Damn it.

@RapSheet

#Commanders coach Dan Quinn tells reporters that QB Jayden Daniels will not practice today because of the injury to his ribs. Marcus Mariota will talk to reporters and take first-team reps in practice.Appears to be trending toward Mariota getting to the start on Sunday...
Mariota worth plugging in this week? Other choices are Herbert or Mason Rudolph
If Daniels isn't playing you should consider it. Depends on who your other options are. Mariota isn't going to impede this offense, he just won't be as spectacularly good as Daniels. What will impede this offense is the Bears defense. You'll have to figure out (guess at) how much impeding they'll do.

What a 180 this injury has been. On Sunday, he was "all smiles" and "feeling good." Now, there's a high chance he won't play, which is fine because playing against the Bears defense could lead to another, more serious injury.

JD has 10+ more seasons to play. no reason to roll him out there for this one. Let it fully heal. Mariota might not look as good when an opponent is game planning solely for him. Keep him in the pocket and he's far less dangerous as a passer. But Kingsbury should have answers. Judging by his work over the years with other scramblers like Murray, C Williams, Mahomes, Manziel, and JD he won't have any issues finding ways to get Mariota releasing it from comfortable spots. They roll out JD and he hurts those ribs badly, they set this franchise back more than just a few games.

I assume I should plug in my backup Darnold (who plays tonight)? Bummer I can't wait to see if Daniels is out for sure.

The books put out Washington +3 days ago. No way they would do this if Daniels had a chance at playing. Stranger things have happened but I'd be stunned if he was out there Sunday.

Man, seems risky.... but I guess the ribs weren't broken just bruised? Probably just pain/stiffness with throwing motion and breathing. Probably not a ton of risk of further injury, more like he won't be operating at 100%?

Personally I would rather him be out. Feel like there's a good chance now that he starts but doesn't finish the game.

hopefully its just coach-speak and he sits this week. They have a good thing going. Mariota is serviceable. Hand the rock to Robinson and Gibson and run the clock. Jayden is a one of a kind player, he's too valuable to just throw out there right now. They are still a game up in the division. Give him the rest he needs. And least importantly, my fantasy team will live as well....

My fantasy team at 2-5 needs him to play this week!

haven't elevated a QB, so he should play, just depends on how he can handle a hit or two. My problem is Kyler's my other option at 10am...

I have the same issue with Tua. Do I start Tua and have a QB in place, or risk sitting him to roll with JD knowing he's a GTD. I'd then have to drop someone such as Sean Tucker to pick up a Bo Nix last minute.

Sure sounds like he's playing. I can't say I'm a fan of it, given the defense they are facing, and that he was only able to have 1 practice. But 75% Daniels is a lot better than 100% Mariota. I think he has to be treated as a top-10 QB, even in this situation.

I’m going Wilson over him. I can’t risk another game where he plays and gets injured and I get barely any points out of the position.

Going Herbert over him. Hoping he comes out ok but can’t take the chance that one big hit puts him on the bench and I get another near zero from him.

I don't worry about reinjury risk. If he starts, he'll finish. I worry more about him not starting. Or struggling if he does.

Jayden Daniels watch.

No decision yet on if the rookie QB starts today (4:25 kickoff). Pre-game check matters. That said, there is optimism with his status, per source.

Would be wild to me if Daniels doesn't have a full practice all week and plays. Expect the unexpected.

That Washington didn't elevate Sam Hartman is another positive sign. Three QBs are already on the roster.

I wrote this on Daniels:

WAS - What To Do With QB Jayden Daniels?

October 27, 2024, 11:49 ET

The big question this morning is Washington QB Jayden Daniels.

Unless you have a comparable backup, I'm starting Daniels.

Here's the detail:

Washington has a 4:25 PM ET kickoff so we likely won’t have official word until about 3:00 PM today. If Daniels is your guy, it’s likely your backup QB has a 1 PM kickoff today. So you probably have to make a decision this morning.

The talk from yesterday through this morning has been increasingly optimistic that Daniels will play today.

Las Vegas feels the same optimism. The Commanders have gone from a 3 point underdog at home to a 1-point favorite against the Bears, and their implied total has gone from 20.0 to 24.25 from Friday.

So clearly the oddsmakers are leaning toward Daniels going and being effective.

There’s also the element of narrative. The NFL is a business but it’s notable the game today is in the late slot with a large audience. Even more important, the quarterback on the other team is fellow star rookie Caleb Williams, a player Daniels is likely to be linked to for years.

Daniels is a competitor and clearly he wants to be out there. Much of the reporting around the injury has been that it will be a “pain tolerance” issue for Daniels.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter just reiterated again this morning that signs continue to point to him being able to play.

So what to do?

I personally think Daniels will play. I don’t have any special insight or information. That’s my pure guess just from reading and sifting through the information we have.

If you have a comparable backup to Daniels, the safe move is go with the player sure to play. If Daniels is significantly better than your backup option, I feel good enough to move him into the starting lineup and risking a Game Time decision.
