QB Justin Fields, NYJ (2 Viewers)

Hope he’s ok. Just don’t want him to be Pickens’ QB. I am not a Steeler fan, so not really sure if Russ is better for the team or not.

Dude can run, dude can't throw or read defenses...I think we'd all agree that he is a solid fantasy qb, not so much on the real football end.
No, I do not agree with this at all, thanks. Not remotely. He’s thrown some incredible passes this year. Some on the run. He’s displayed touch on short throws and accuracy on deep ones.

Pickens has dropped more than a few of them.

i think we can all agree that you haven’t been watching him play.
You must not have watched the Raider game, he missed wide open receivers and he had a INT at the goal line saved because a dumb DL hit him late. The INT had long been thrown and the roughing the passer call saved that and later led to a rushing TD for him. He was also saved by more stupid defensive flags that kept the drives alive that probably don't happen against teams not named the Raiders :wall:
That doesn’t mean I agree that he’s not a good RL QB.

I think Fields is doing an admirable job in a difficult situation.

I also believe Wilson is going to get sacked 4+ times against the Jets, and likely see the bench agains after this start.
I've said it before but I think it is convenient that Wilson is suddenly healthy before the Jets game. I do believe he was promised the starter role when he was signed/traded so now Tomlin is making good on that promise. But this is not an easy situation for Wilson. If they win then that is great for the team and Wilson keeps the job, for now.

If they lose and Wilson doesn't play well they can go back to Fields for an easier match-up next week.

Convenient timing all around for this scenario. Saves Fields from having to play vs the Jets.
NFL coaches don't do this.
Yeah, coaches want to win. Especially at 4-2.

It’s a fun theory through.
Yes, they do, in January/February. So why are they benching him if he gives them the best chance to win?
I believe he’s agreeing with me that Tomlin isn’t playing some macho head game where he’s sending Wilson to the wolves this week against the Jets to save Fiekds for an easier matchup the following week.

It’s so stupid that I hate myself for even typing all that out.
Tomlin does not give a **** about about fantasy football, which most people on this site do care about. the Steelers cannot keep winning if teams do not respect the pass game
They’re 4-2 in real football.

You’re welcome to believe whatever you like.
I like what I see...you don't?

Who has better odds to be the starter in Pitt next year, Fields or Wilson?

Russ has exceeded my expectations that were admittedly low. He makes the Steelers look like they have an NFL offense. It’s actually entertaining to watch again.

I’ll be greedy and say sign them both. Russ to a 3 year deal that allows the Steelers to get out after 2 years. But Russ starts next year if he keeps this up, you would have to.

Resign Fields too but I think he wants to start and has to go somewhere. But I can hope he stays.

Mixed bag.

The TD pass that was called back, and the deep ball to the sideline to Pickens were both great throws.

The other deep ball was way underthrown & took a fantastic catch by a receiver who had to come back through the DB - that had int written all over it. And the fumble was careless - the sack before that was also devoid of pocket presence. Just no clock, shoulda scrambled. Old Russ would have scrambled.

But I’m sure he did enough to keep the gig. Half his deep balls still look like 3 flies up, and against a better defense than the Giants the regression fairies will take their lb of flesh.

Justin Fields ain't seeing the field again unless Russ crashed and burns. Doesn't matter if the downfield throws are perfect... just the fact that he THROWS them changes the way the defense has to play and it opens up the running lanes. Fields should take this time to learn the short game and put some air under his passes. He'll get his chance again, just not in 2024 (or maybe 2025).

This guy was added for "a lot" of FAAB in a few of my dynasty leagues.
Also is free to get when FCFS opens at 9 AM in a few too.
Quite the range

Let it go, man. It's over.
Redraft - for now and that is fine. Move on but be ready if something happens to Russ. Fields will go back to someone who can put up 30 fantasy points any given day.
Dynasty - no. He will get another shot, probably 2.
Who are the teams likely looking for a QB in 2025? Let's talk about the options:

Carolina
NY Giants
Tennessee
NY Jets
Vegas
Cleveland
Rams?
Colts?

You can probably eliminate 3-4 of them as they'll draft their guy in the top 10. Get him on the Rams if Stafford retires or the Colts you might have something from a fantasy perspective, but the things that plague him continue to, and it's hard to see him solidifying a job long term.

I think PIT wants to keep Fields if they can.

Lots of draft picks get second and third opportunities. Darnold, Mayfield, Geno Smith, Malik Willis to name a few. Yes these guys have/had warts but Fields will get another shot or 2. If you own him in dynasty just hold for now and be patient. When he gets his shot and you need a QB then you can start him. If you don't like Fields then sell once he looks to be the starter again.

Anyone else think Fields may hang it up and do something else? Not sure how much cash he's saved, but he may think it isn't worth it any longer.

I'm just curious as to why you think he will hang it up.
Because he keeps getting shot down as a starter. You know, if you can't get what you want, do something else. Unless he is satisfied as a backup and drawing a paycheck. Who knows.

Honestly, I don't think he has Charlie Batch syndrome. A once promising starter in the league who was happy being a backup cashing an easy check. With Fields recent benching he has expressed his commitment to improving and working hard, so it seems unlikely he would quit football at this point.

Steeler's beat the New Yuk teams. Sure Russell has looked good not great. Let's see what happens as the Steeler's get into the meat of their schedule.

And that is putting it mildly. They have Commanders, Ravens, Browns, Bengals, Browns, Eagles, Ravens, Chiefs, Bengals coming up. That is simply brutal.

Why do you leave zero room for improvement for a 25year old?

If the Stillers stick with dangeruss for ROS, I'd fully expect Fields to sign a FA contract elsewhere this coming offseason. Plenty of teams starving for a QB who will recruit him hard and pay him way more money. Very little chance IMO that they would be able to keep both QBs this offseason. Just look at some of the trash starting at QB around the league. Fields is imperfect, but he's also young and enticing compared to too many names to name out here.

I don’t know that I ever said that. Unfortunately for him he’s running out of opportunities.

I just posted a list of QB needy teams. Where do you think he can go that will be able to unlock his potential?

Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, and Geno Smith have all had career resurgences elsewhere, but for Justin you only get so many chances.

He’ll get to choose his own path now, which could be really beneficial for him. I do think he has the right attitude about it.

Raiders? Not with Getsy there. Right?

What kind of contract do you think he’ll get?

Mayfield and Darnold both had to sign one year prove it deals in a competition scenario.

The season isn’t over yet, but people are already speculating about Justin Fields' future and the notion that he might not get another opportunity. Some posters are even suggesting that he might quit. Remember, Fields beat the Raiders, and Russell Wilson beat both New York teams none of which were particularly impressive victories. To date, Justin has only played for Chicago and Pittsburgh. Meanwhile, players like Geno Smith, Baker Mayfield, and Sam Darnold have cycled through four different teams each. Darnold has lost two games in a row, and the season is far from over.

In all honesty, Justin Fields has shown signs of improvement. Russell Wilson is nearing 36, so he's not a long-term solution. If he’s the short-term answer, the goal had better be a Super Bowl win. Starting with a playoff game.

I think his best fit is to stay in PIT, take what he can get and keep learning their system and grow. No pressure to play and he can eventually take over from Russ. Russ won't be there forever. PIT has the coaches and the culture that can help Fields.

If he goes to the wrong team/fit it might as well be over for him like you say. Take his time and stay in PIT. Long term that could be the best spot for him.

Sample size is also a small concern for Russ’ anointment.

NYG D has looked a little better over the last few weeks, but they’re still not what I would call an “elite” NFL defense.

And the Jets before them were a struggling defense who couldn’t stop the run & had a ton of injuries.

In the Jets game, Russ threw up several “3 flies up” floaters that could have easily been interceptions. In the Giants game he had a couple of passes that could have easily been picked as well had the DB been paying attention to the ball being underthrown.

The Steelers schedule: WAS, BAL, CLE, CIN, CLE, PHI, BAL, KC, CIN

All better defenses, with better pass rush, and better secondaries than NYG & NYJ, in my opinion.

I could see Fields getting another shot this year if Russ falters badly in 1-2 of those games.

Again, credit due to Russ - he’s looked pretty good, and has made some good plays. I’m just thinking the jury is still out.

Not sure there’s a better job in this world than carrying a clipboard for 17 weeks for 8-10 million

Interesting. I would not expect him to sign there as a backup and don't think it makes a lot of sense for him. He had his opportunity there. They've moved on.

As I have shares of Fields I hope this is true but the past season didn’t speak to this. Plenty of teams could have traded for him for peanuts last year and only the Steelers bit. I’m not sure there’s a huge market out there for him.

Do you not think his time with the Steelers changed opinions? I definitely do. I think someone did this upthread, but here's my go at teams with shakey enough QB situations to give Fields some serious consideration this offseason, in divisional order:

- Dolphins
- Jets
- Browns
- Colts
- Titans
- Raiders
- Giants
- Saints
- Panthers
- Seahawks
- Rams

That's a long list and it only takes two to tango over any given free agent player. Unless Fields plays again this season and sucks or gets hurt, I predict he'll be one of the early FA signings, and to a pretty decent-sized one- or two-year prove it deal. Thinking half the going rate for a decent starter, say $20-25 MM per and calibrate somewhat from that baseline. Zero chance Pittsburgh competes with that to bring him back as a backup, when they'll need to pay Russ the full decent-starter rate, assuming he maintains that hold.

Fair, but I do think his six games this year for Pitt opened some previously dubious eyes.

It ended up being nothing. As they converted on the next play.

But how funny was it that Fields was put in to ice the game on a running play and he slid/gave himself up a yard short from the sticks?

Maybe Tomlin does know what he’s doing with this QB situation.

Guy can't even slide right.

Apparently the New York football Jets are focused on Fields - because if there’s one team that can develop a young QB, it’s… the Jets?
:oldunsure:

No. This guy tried to breathe through his eyelids or something when the pressure got intense. Forget it. Forget it before it happened.
FOX Sports’ Jordan Schultz reports the Jets are the team “most interested” in free agent Justin Fields.
“They love his athleticism, leadership traits, ability to move the pocket and maybe most importantly, believe his best football is ahead of him,” Schultz reported Friday evening, For the Steelers’ part, Schultz reports the sides are maintaining an “open dialogue.” It would appear Fields is drawing some legitimate starting interest, though he could still end up in a Sam Darnold-type situation where he’s signed only for a rookie to be drafted the following month. With his market already beginning to come into focus, Fields could be one of the first players to sign upon the beginning of Monday’s “legal tampering” period.

Fields to the Jets would be an excellent move by NY. Improving young QB with both upside and experience. Especially given its a weak draft class.
There’s no way on god’s green earth in the YOOL 2025 that the Jets do anything but ruin that young man even more than he’s already been ruined.

They have a spotless, sparkling track record of ruining young QBs and Fields will be no exception.

I can think of no worse landing spot for Fields, and the only thing we can collectively be certain of is watching a disaster unfold.

Past performance is no guarantee of future results.

*unless it’s the Jets.

• Geno Smith - bust, until he went to Seattle.
• Darnold - bust, until he went to Carolina, then MIN
• Wilson - kid looked legit in college - showed a few flashes before hurting his knee. I’m convinced the Jets ruined him, too.

ARod came pre-ruined, so no judgement there, but Fields needs someone who can be a QB whisperer, not a QB garbage disposal like the Jets.

I hope your team figures it out one day - I don’t see this as a path to figuring it out.

I don't either. I think the guy who comes in and does it is going to have to have the talent and unflappability of somebody like David Ortiz for the Red Sox in the aughts. Back then, the Red Sox were picked on like the Jets were and it took a guy like David and a superstar crew to overcome the Yankees and their spending ways. But that's who the Jets are gonna need, and they'll know it when they see it.

It is not Justin Fields, IMO.
