I'm going to go out on a limb and say, I think.....Brady may have been better than Mac Jones.I don't think Mac will be a great fantasy asset this year, but the last time NE did not have an OC was 2010, when they did not have a single receiver with 850 receiving yards. Yet they went 14-2, scored 518 points, and Brady threw 37 TD.
Are the 2022 receiving options (Bourne, Parker, Meyers, Agholor, Thornton, Henry, Smith, White) worse than the guys they had in 2010 (Welker post-ACL surgery, Deion Branch, Brandon Tate, rookies Gronk and Hernandez, Woodhead)? Certainly, Jones (at 24) isn't Brady (who was 33). I don't think it would be crazy if Jones put up middle of the road QB2 numbers (he was QB19 last year). I don't think the NE defense will be as good, meaning NE stands a decent chance of having to pass more in 2022.
In 2010, the TE's combined for 18 TD's (exactly half of Brady's 36, not 37). They also got 3 TD's from some guy named Randy Moss.I don't think Mac will be a great fantasy asset this year, but the last time NE did not have an OC was 2010, when they did not have a single receiver with 850 receiving yards. Yet they went 14-2, scored 518 points, and Brady threw 37 TD.

LOL. I never said Jones was going to turn into Brady. But looking at the beginning of Brady's and Jones' careers.I'm going to go out on a limb and say, I think.....Brady may have been better than Mac Jones.
Actually this started because someone commented on the weakness of the Pats pass catchers, and then you showed how well 33 year old Tom Brady did when the Pats had subpar weapons in the passing game in the past to somehow imply that therefore Mac Jones would be ok this season.LOL. I never said Jones was going to turn into Brady. But looking at the beginning of Brady's and Jones' careers.
Brady first year as a starter (Year 2 with NE):
264-461-63.9-2843-18-12 (86.5 rating)
Brady second year as a starter (Year 3 with NE):
373-601-62.1-3764-28-14 (85.7 rating)
Jones first year as a starter (Year 1 with NE):
352-521-67.6-3801-22-13 (92.5 rating)
Brady saw a 30% increase in passing attempts from Year 1 to Year 2 as a starter. As I mentioned before, if Jones gets the same increase in passing attempts in Year 2 as a starter as TB12 did (and Jones produced at the same level as he did last year), his numbers would be in the 4900/30 TD range. Last year, that's pretty similar to what Derek Carr produced (4804/23) with a few extra passing TD. Carr ranked QB12 last year, which is why I suggested Mac Jones with more passing attempts could approach low end QB1 numbers.
That's all I said. Will Jones see as big an increase in passing attempts as Brady did? Probably not. But Jones should still see a decent increase in attempts for all the reasons I explained already. The 2002 Patriots look to be similar to the 2022 Patriots. The 02 team struggled on defense, ranking 17th in points allowed. NE had to throw more to stay in games, ended up 9-7, and had 9 games where they allowed 24+ points. They had to pass to stay in games . . . which is what could happen this year with Jones and the current squad.
None of that has anything to do with Brady going on to be a top QB several years in the future (ie, past his second year as a starter). It took Brady 5 seasons as a starter to break the 4,000-yard passing barrier. He's had 13 such seasons overall. I don't think it should ruffle any feathers to suggest that Mac Jones could hit 4,000 yards sooner than Brady did (and that doesn't mean Jones would be considered better than Brady if he did).
Let me articulate things better so we can leave out comparisons to Brady (or anyone else). There are always some QB that will miss time each season (injuries, suspensions, COVID, etc.). Jones could see a sizeable jump in passing attempts this year, not because he is so great or so developed, but because the NE defense could be very mediocre. Maybe that could get him into the Top 10 in passing attempts this year . . . not because he is such a great QB, but out of necessity.Actually this started because someone commented on the weakness of the Pats pass catchers, and then you showed how well 33 year old Tom Brady did when the Pats had subpar weapons in the passing game in the past to somehow imply that therefore Mac Jones would be ok this season.
All the information in this new post, while interesting to consider, doesn't really address that original point either.
Jones reaching 4,000 yards earlier in his career than Brady ever did wouldn't mean all that much either as the game has changed a lot even over that short of a time period.
I don't see Jones anywhere close to being a Top 12 QB in 2022. That's not a knock against a second year QB - it's just that QB is deeper than ever this season, and if the other second year starters like Wilson, Fields, Lawrence and/or Lance steps up he may not even be a Top 24 QB on a ppg basis. Obviously Jones could take a big leap as well though.
Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said he's seen "dramatic" improvement in Mac Jones this offseason.
Belichick said Jones is "starting from a much, much higher point this year." This is in line with everything we've heard from New England coaches, players, and beat writers over the past few months. Heading into his sophomore season, Jones has slimmed down and has worked on his downfield throwing, which was lacking in 2021. Perhaps Jones' improvements will lead to a more balanced New England offense in 2022. Last year, the Patriots had the sixth lowest pass rate over expected and ranked as one of the NFL's most conservative teams in the red zone. Jones, who finished his rookie year with the league's eighth highest completion rate over expected, should be a solid pick in superflex formats this summer.

MAC JONES QB, NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS
The Athletic's Chad Graff writes "the point of concern is nearing" for the Patriots offense after it has struggled badly throughout training camp.
"The running game struggled," Graff writes. "The receivers didn’t get open. The incompletions mounted." And the quarterbacks have been under constant pressure. With longtime OC Josh McDaniels gone, coach Bill Belichick has handed offensive coaching duties to ex-DC Matt Patricia and former special teams coach Joe Judge. Patricia is coaching the offensive line and calling the plays while Judge is handling Mac Jones and the quarterbacks. Just an utter nightmare. It's a big concern for Jones' development. This offense is completely devoid of playmakers, and the coaching sounds even worse.

The Athletic's Chad Graff believes "there's reason to believe [Mac Jones] isn't fully prepared for Year 2."
Jones and the entire New England offense has been a disaster throughout the preseason. It's hardly a shock considering training camp reports of a dysfunctional offense coached by defensive specialist Matt Patricia and former special teams coach Joe Judge. Jones this preseason completed 13 of his 21 attempts for 132 yards (6.3 YPA), no touchdowns, and an ugly interception last week against the Raiders. "There’s still plenty of time for Jones to turn things around and deliver a great season, but it was far from the preseason he and the team were hoping for," Graff said. Jones' struggles and the ineptitude of the Patriots offense and coaches could sink the fantasy prospects of every New England player in 2022.

- MAC JONES QB, NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS
The Athletic's Chad Graff believes the Patriots could abandon their new offensive scheme should they struggle early in the regular season.
New England's post-Josh McDaniels offense -- coached by the curious tandem of Joe Judge and Matt Patricia -- has been borderline disastrous since the start of training camp. A simplified offensive approach has resulted in immense struggles with both the passing and rushing attacks. "It has gone so poorly that there are questions about whether the Patriots might scrap this new scheme if it doesn’t find success early in the season," Graff said. The new Pats offense could include more run-pass options for Jones, who excelled with the team's infrequent use of RPOs in 2021. Whether the team sticks with its new offensive system might hinge on whether they can improve on outsize zone rushes -- plays that produced nothing for the team in three preseason games.

Game has been over for a bit, did he actually miss time?Jones back injury vs. MIA.
No. Went for X-rays after the last NE drive / end of the game.Game has been over for a bit, did he actually miss time?Jones back injury vs. MIA.
Mac Jones completed 21-of-30 passes for 213 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in the Patriots' 20-7, Week 1 loss to the Dolphins.
The big news after the game was the Patriots' trainers escorting Jones to the X-rays room for some unknown injury. He played the entire game. Jones' early interception was an end-zone shot to DeVante Parker than Xavien Howard batted into the air to the safety. The lone scoring drive Jones engineered was a 15-play, 92-yarder that ended in a short Jones score to Ty Montgomery. It appeared as though Matt Patricia was calling the offensive plays for New England in Week 1. It clearly didn't go well. Jones also lost a fumble that was returned for a Miami touchdown in this one. The Patriots go to Pittsburgh in Week 2. Jones is well off the fantasy radar, even if he is healthy.

Things will potentially open up some when Thornton gets back in a few weeks. He was drawing double coverage and was a deep threat. The question will be how much they play him. It's early, but Mac looks similar to last year. Accurate, quick decisions, but not much deep separation by his WRs. The pass to Parker in the EZ was perfect, should've been called PI, but no separation. He had help in the run game early, then Wilkins and Seiler made some stuff plays. Hopefully he's OK.
Mac Jones (illness) did not practice Thursday.
Concern early in the week was for Jones' back after the second-year quarterback underwent X-rays following the Patriots' Week 1 loss to Miami. Now being sidelined with an illness, the question becomes whether or not Jones will be well enough to play in Week 2 against the Steelers. Brian Hoyer would likely draw the start if Jones is unable to go.

Mac Jones (illness) practiced Friday.
Jones practiced fully on Wednesday after picking up a back injury in Week 1 against the Dolphins. He missed Thursday's practice with an illness. With a full Friday sessions, Jones should be good to go for Week 2 against a Steelers defense that terrorized Joe Burrow last week. Jones, who completed 21-of-30 passes for 213 yards, one touchdown, and one interception against Miami, is only playable in superflex formats going forward.

Mac Jones completed 21-of-35 attempts for 252 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in the Patriots' 17-14, Week 2 win over the Steelers.
Jones had an up-and-down day. His interception was a misread where he thought he had one-on-one coverage deep but didn't see Minkah Fitzpatrick coming over to make the interception. He also had a near interception that was a very poor short throw, but the Steeler defender dropped it. Jones had some nice moments as well, including scrambling on a 3rd-and-2 to keep a late drive alive and hitting Nelson Agholor for a 44-yard TD. He has a chance for more passing volume in Week 3 when the Patriots take on the pass-funnel Ravens.

Mac Jones completed 22-of-32 passes for 321 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions in the Patriots' Week 3 loss to the Ravens, adding five carries for 31 yards and a touchdown.
Adding insult to injury. Jones' final play of the game was an interception to Ravens cornerback Marcus Peters. Despite throwing three interceptions on the afternoon, Jones averaged a solid 10.0 YPA, connecting with DeVante Parker for several big plays on the afternoon. Jones would run in a three-yard touchdown in the second quarter for his only touchdown of the day, but the story of Jones' day will be the injury he suffered in the fourth quarter. Jones was still receiving treatment during the postgame interviews and is expected to speak with the media on Monday. Unsurprisingly, head coach Bill Belichick did not offer an update on Jones after the game. If Jones is unable to go in Week 4 against the Packers, Brian Hoyer would likely draw the start.

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said, "I'm not going to speculate wildly," when asked about Mac Jones (ankle) being placed on injured reserve.
This quote comes from Belichick's 7:30 AM videoconference after he was asked about whether or not Jones would be placed on injured reserve. Belichick noted that there's "nothing definitive" on Jones' injury at this point and that the team will wait on more information before making a decision. We'll probably know more about Jones' status as the day progresses. Should Jones miss any time, veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer will likely draw the start in Jones' absence.

Is Hoyer the backup? If so, yes.God- this offense is going to suck isn't it?
Given that no one on the Patriots was DRAFTED as a fantasy starter at any position in a 12-team league . . .God- this offense is going to suck isn't it?
I don't think Coach BB sees it quite the same way.6-8 weeks easy.
High Ankle Sprains are really tough and take a while to heal properly. And if he needs surgery? 8 weeks for sure.
When you see severe high ankle sprains......he will have to be completely off the ankle for 4 weeks easily....like zero weight bearing on it. His season is most likely over for the most part.
Stinks for you Pat’s fans. He is a good solid young QB. Let him heal up the proper way.....the team is not going anywhere this season to begin with. That could be a chronic condition if you rush back.
LOL of course not. But the reality of a severe high ankle sprain is what it is and you can seriously endanger the rest of his career. They are going nowhere this season. **** him down for two months minimum.I don't think Coach BB sees it quite the same way.6-8 weeks easy.

NFL Network's Mike Giardi reports Mac Jones (ankle) is "still operating as if he has a chance" to start Sunday's game against the Packers.
Don't shoot the messenger. Per Giardi, Jones is "in the facility and participating in game planning." The second-year quarterback has told "multiple teammates to not count him out of this weekend's game." Needless to say, we aren't really buying it after Jones had to be carried down the stairs into the locker room in Week 3, but we would move heaven and earth to make sure Brian Hoyer never saw the field again, too. Jones' Thursday practice status will be updated a little later. We are firmly expecting another DNP.

What in the hell?
There really isn’t much difference between Jones and Hoyer, and they are implementing the same game plan either way. The only smokescreen would be if they rolled out Zappe instead, who plays an entirely different style than those two do.What in the hell?
Bill thinks he's smokescreening the Packers and making them waste time prepping for both QBs.

If NE felt Jones would only miss 3 games or less, they would not put him on IR. If they felt he would miss 4 weeks or more, they would have put him on IR. No one from NE said he suffered a severe high ankle sprain. That was the media trying to dig up a diagnosis from unnamed sources. I am not saying Jones isn't hurt, and I am not suggesting BB hasn't messed with the injury report over the years. But apparently, they have info that we don't. It doesn't really help or hurt NE all that much to just leave Jones on the active roster and deactivate him on game day (it takes a spot away from someone else . . . but that's probably a deep depth piece or a special teamer).People with "severe high ankle sprains" don't play the next week. This reeks of shenanigans by BB.
Either that or it was a misdiagnosis - which seems odd, since the day after he got hurt, there was talk of Jones going on the IR.
I vividly recall Deion Branch, who tore his ACL and had reconstructive knee surgery, being listed as "questionable" for months. It was due to that, in part, that the NFL changed the rules for team reporting of injuries, and it taught me to never, ever trust Bill Belichick when it comes to injury reporting.
ETA: Branch was a roster clogger on my bench for like 6 weeks.![]()
Well, sure - I 100% would not expect him to say "he's hurting bad, and hey, D-Coordinators shouldn't bother preparing for him if they're on our schedule for the next 4-6 weeks".Q: How is Mac Jones doing? Belichick: "Fine...he's in the training room. But there are a lot of guys in the training room." Says the decision on if Mac will play is up to the medical staff, like with any player.
