QB Malik Willis, GB (1 Viewer)

@TomPelissero
The #Packers have not reached out and are not expected to pursue any veteran quarterbacks, including Ryan Tannehill, per sources.

The team expects Jordan Love back on the sooner end of the initial 3-6 week timeline and are focused on preparing Malik Willis and Sean Clifford

@DMRussini
While there is no deal right now, the Green Bay Packers have reached out to free agent quarterback Ryan Tannehill, sources tell
@theathletic
.

The former Titans quarterback told me in July, for him to sign “it would have to be right situation.”

@MySportsUpdate
The #Packers will start Malik Willis on Sunday vs. the Colts — assuming Jordan Love isn’t cleared, per HC Matt LaFleur. Sean Clifford will be the backup.

It's all about comfort and his nerves.
Night n day difference in play and you can oddly tell by watching.

If it were basketball you'd call a timeout mid play when he looks nervous. Now ya just gotta grit your teeth and hope it's not too bad.

When he's comfy- huge HUGE arm and OMG speed.

The Colts showed a good pass rush Sunday, but had trouble stopping the run. They should pound Jacobs until he passes out from fatigue.

I missed that they play the Colts. That's so interesting. Both QBs are shaky but wow talents. Richardson is supposedly better I know but what an interesting live comparison

This guy absolutely stinks to high heaven.

Sorry Packers faithful…..get Tanny in and quick.

Willis is not a competent NFL QB and if I am wrong I will eat crow…..but I saw enough.

Utter turd.

Can’t wait until the Colts get ahold of him. Like I said earlier, the Packers should run, run, and run some more. I remember a Colts at Dolphins game in 1975, won by the Colts 33-17, where the Colts threw a total of 4 times after Bert Jones got injured early in the game and was replaced by Marty Domres. The Colts only completed 6 passes that day. Jones 4/10/26 and Domres 2/4/40 for a total of 66 yards. The Colts ran it down their throats 43 times, with 39 of them coming from Lydell Mitchell, Rosevelt Leaks, and Don McCauley. The Colts rushed for 43/180/4 that day and Miami couldn’t stop them. The Packers should have a similar game plan. If they don’t, it could get ugly for the Packers. Against the Texans this week the Colts had no answer for their running game.

Richardson threw nine completions and completed 47% of his passes.
Colts fans are way overstating success for him.

Excellent historical post.

I expect both teams to run all day and maybe even run on third and long. Taylor and Jacobs are going to be tired.

I'm a fan of Malik the person. He hasn't yet proven to be an NFL level QB. I'm not shining on him.

The Packers seem to always have problems with the Colts. I just looked it up and see the Colts have won 4 of the last 5 games and 7 of the last 10 games going back to 1985. I was at the Indy Dome one year in the late 90's when the Colts were 0-10 going into the game and the Packers were coming off a superbowl win and would return again that season, looked unbeatable. Sure enough the Colts won their first game of the season that day to go to 1-10 on a last second field goal. Paul Justin looked like a Hall of Famer and Favre had his standard game with multiple td's and multiple picks. I think I had the worst seats in the Dome, with my back literally up against a concrete wall in the highest possible row.

Good post. I hated the Hoosier Dome. I love their stadium now.

Some reporters setting him up to say something stupid and he's all class in replies.

Work hard everyday, that's what you can control.

Been learning the new offense since I got here.

Wouldn't put a percent on how much of playbook he knows. He learns what the plan is for that week, memorizes and executes.

Was going over every play in his head during last game.

Has back n forth w coaches trying to make sure he sees what they see and getting on same page.
Lafleur mentioned this approach by him and said it helps speed things up.

Lafleur it's not about throwing deep or utilizing speed it's about running our offense.

Lafleur- When any player gets injured there are adjustments.

Lafleur (maybe third time he's said it) said one of the things they liked about him was how well trained he was. They've worked with a lot of the same people and they all spoke highly of Malik.

Couldn't hear question but I guess it was "what about execution" and Lafleur said his job is to put Willis in situations where he can succeed.
I think a repeat of the question
I coach the Packers and I'm not sure I've ever been asked so much about another team's player and how they do things. He's a GBP and we'll take it from there.

WR quotes I saw or heard were very vanilla next man up type

Anyone think this guy could be a good start ?
My week 2 opponent in one league has Jordan Love & nobody else. The Jayden Daniels owner put out that he was wiling to part him. I gave up a lot to get him, (James Cook, Trevor Lawrence & next year's 7th rd pick for Daniels & his 4th rd pick). Now, this owner is a wheeler n' dealer & he didn't even want Lawrence. So he's likely to move him as well, my opponent, the most likely choice. :)

Barring a trade, the QB available to my opponent that I would add over Willis is Aaron Rodgers. If you're in a similar situation & your opponent is stacked, than yeah, I would roll with Willis over guys like Carr, Fields & Darnold. Yesterday someone said they traded for Christian Watson, who I think is going to be targeted deep a number of times. One of them could be off a pitch to Jacobs who then laterals it back to Willis.

Given Willis' arm strength, I could see setting him short any number of times with quick looks & pump fakes, then hitch it back some & let it go! If the Colts can get away with loading up to stop Jacobs & predict Willis' 1st read right & disguise their looks, yeah, he'll throw 4 picks. Apart from quick hitters, timing & placement ... I mean, are those things going to be there anyway? Fifteen of his passes have to be off run action, move him around, an emphasis on WRs working back to their QB. Could bomb, but I agree with LaFleur, it's up to him to put his QB in favorable situations.

Nope. He has looked absolutely dreadful in the past.

That said, I'd expect Lafleur to put together a solid game plan where he just manages the game.

GB, at home, should be able to run the ball. Indy was trounced by Mixon last week (although they do have triple threats in Nico, Diggs, and Dell). I could also see them using J. Reed quite a bit. Indy likes to play fast, Lafluer will slow this game down as much as possible.

Don't see a lot of upside in Malik in a GB win, and if they start trailing and he has to throw, Malik's floor is through the floor.

I think there is absolutely upside for Willis himself having FF points. It’s a good coach, good offense and a QB who will scam a ton of points with his legs.

The floor is they can’t even move the ball and he gets benched though. Also I fear it’s a big problem for GB pass catchers no matter what Willis does with his legs.

Christian Watson is firmly on my bench until Love comes back. Until I'm proven wrong, I think this offense is a FF wasteland with Willis at QB

I see people actually picking him up. At the moment I don't get it. He could prove me wrong however.
Super desperate I guess? Two QB league? I'm not sure how he has any value in a 1 QB league.
I see some picking him up in 1qb leagues.
I did it because I think the ceiling is high, but I don't think it's likely to be helpful. Unfortunately, this is maybe the best possible matchup this week and I don't think anyone can justify putting him in their lineup yet. Even as a believer, he will probably score 25 on my bench and then not know what to do next week either. By the time I trust him, Love will be back.

Why is the ceiling high? I'm unsure, but open minded.

One of the most QB friendly offenses/staffs in the league IMO and he’s going to get 60 rushing yards just being him. I don’t see why he can’t have 200 yards passing, 70 rushing, 2 total TDs.

I see it in some leagues. Some teams have three QBs and I see the slim pickings for QBs in those.
Generally IDK why y'all would even have Malik.

Backup FF QBs are usually a waste of time. Either they get injured or someone else does which creates a better option on the WW and ..oh I've long thought backup QBs were a bad habit of people in FF.

If it's slim pickings, fine, totally understand. If you start two, totally understand. If it's a traditional league, you need to stop wasting a roster spot on a backup QB. It's just wasteful.

ETA 63 QBs start in a given year. Someone can work out the odds but I'm not even sure it's good odds your backup will be available when you need him to be

Willis has not been good, and doesn't even know the offense yet. I can see the game plan being very simple. Short screens, read options, and a lot of run plays in general. Probably occasionally chuck a ball deep to keep the defense honest lol

The more I think of it the more I think Lafleur has to show Malik he believes in him and let him roll. It doesn't matter if they lose if Malik can learn to calm down.
Calm Malik is a talent
Frantic Malik is brutally bad.

I don't see that he has a choice. He traded for him.

Bench, berate, hurt feelings...why'd you add him?
I think just gotta let him learn to relax because maybe then you've got a gem.
I've read enough about slow starts and Pats and Bengals lately to know people are overstating one game. It may be brutal to watch in spots but if he calms down and becomes a player...gotta risk it

I've seen QBs who hang on to the ball way too long in this league, and then there's Malik, who is a trend setter when it comes to the art of being indecisive with the ball in hand.

Best bet is just line him up and run.

Perhaps, but if GB doesn't run it 40 times I can see Willis getting sacked a lot.

I see it because there wasn't necessarily a lot of standout week 1 waiver wire pick ups. So if you missed on some of the Likely types and have an open spot why not pick him up and see what happens? A running QB with a strong arm can be very fantasy friendly. If he flames out then drop him for the next lotto ticket next week. I don't mind the gamble because there really is no risk here.

I think at the very least rostering him is solid strategy! Above, a Watson owner says he's benching him but Willis has excellent mobility to buy time to launch missiles downfield. Watson is an excellent combination of length & speed. More of a long strider, very linear with the requisite catch radius. Often wrong, but I have him seeing 8 to 10 targets. Listening to Willis, I can see that his mindset is part of what they liked.

I suppose Indy will try to trigger assignment breakdowns up front, hot reads & expose a lack of cohesion. If the Packers know what to expect, look out!

Willis is an interception waiting to happen. Love looked frazzled and average at best last week, behind that Oline.

This is it for me. I like him with his running yards better than say rodgers and his 200 yards and 1td

"I first met Willis at rookie camp in Nashville when he was with the Titans in 2022. I stepped in front of our camera crew and stuck my hand out to introduce myself to the then-rookie. After a quick introduction, he approached the crew of four and asked each their names. When he walked away, we all looked at each other and commented on the kind gesture — this wasn’t a normal occurrence for our veteran crew. Willis answered all the questions and came off appreciative of this opportunity to play football at the highest level.
He came across as slightly innocent that day, but on the field and in meeting rooms I’m told he’s intelligent, hard-working, curious, and self-aware. There is a belief that Willis will be more comfortable running LaFleur’s offense than what he was doing this summer under first-year Titans coach Brian Callahan.

Willis’ instincts (and success) are based around his mobility. Though at times, as one Titans coach said, “the game looked really fast for him.” That may be the biggest issue for the Packers, getting Willis through his progressions with pressures coming from everywhere. The Colts are preparing to defend a run-heavy game plan led by new Packers RB Josh Jacobs, after they were gashed by Houston’s ground game in Week 1.

This will be a big test for the Packers, who opted not to sign a veteran quarterback in hopes that Love returns soon and Willis can get them through the next couple weeks."

I was so cursey happy for this guy watching that game ball video.
I saw it, saw all these Titans and other NFL guys commenting, watched the video and 😪
Good for him!

Idk how the Packers love him so fast, that was nice and then of course he's a champ saying team effort and thanks to others and....

Guy has been through a lot and that was a really nice scene.
Either the video or just noticing so many players happy for him, now y'all see what I was saying- he's a good good guy.

Idk so much about 14 passes feeling like they didn't pass and I haven't watched the game yet but he deserves a day and good for him

Packers are playing with house freaking money winning a game like this at home. God tier management and coaching. Colts knew what was coming and still got obliterated. Not a good sign for this colts team
