QB Malik Willis, GB (1 Viewer)

TennesseeTitans.com’s Jim Wyatt believes Malik Willis “isn’t guaranteed” a roster spot.

Wyatt did note that Willis has looked better than Will Levis this offseason. He believes Willis ultimately makes the 53-man roster, though that isn’t a foregone conclusion. The former third-rounder was far from ready for the NFL as a rookie. He made three starts in place of an injured Ryan Tannehill and never topped 100 passing yards in a game. Willis also threw three interceptions with no touchdowns. With their playoff hopes on the line, the Titans gave Josh Dobbs the start in Week 18. Willis still has time to develop into a quality backup or even a starter, but the Levis draft pick indicates the Titans don’t see him as a long-term answer in Tennessee.

Malik was working out with Titans WRs (and Jordan Taamu)

Another video shows him with a QB coach nitpicking touch passes. Coach is barking out (idk) and Malik either throws a bullet or soft and leading pass depending what he said.

Same coach seems to be discussing almost throwing it in the dirt and the WR comes back and dives for it.

Kid is still putting the work in...

Now it's said that this kid is gonna work with a private QB coach during his down time before camp.

He's textbook "how to improve" and I hope it pans out for him.
In the least, Levis has a great example of how the second year off-season "free time" should go. Willis doesn't need to be the end result we covet but a work ethic example will do just fine.
If Levis is with private QB coaches next February....maybe just maybe the Titans figured out a process of how to develop QBs.
I’ll be thrilled if Willis turns into a good backup. That’s not a bad return for a third round pick.
Then if Levis shows just enough this year for Vrabel to be willing to start him next year, the rebuild can be on track. If they don’t need a QB, while Harrison may be gone by the time they pick, this draft has some quality WR depth like Nabers and Egbuka who will almost be guaranteed to be available.

Last two days Vrabel has praised Willis' off-season.
Glaring improvement.
"Almost" when asked if he was most improved.

Night n day different per Tannehill who did a "whew" noise and followed with 'he looks good"

Re keeping three quarterbacks which was questionable at one time Vrabel said ya can never have enough good quarterbacks.

4 for 4 with a leading touch pass over the middle to Phillips and a deep "look at my arm" beautiful pass to Roberson. Reporters saying he didn't have that last year. All four showed the right touch and placement and definitely impressive improvement. They hadn't necessarily seen it yet with Vrabel cutting down media access more each year so some of that was their first time this year.

It's still in shorts

Contact should bring out the obvious tougher plays but also his running ability and Levis' too.

2nd and third string defense was sharp today. Willis didn't throw it a few times, threw it in the dirt others, had a nice throw to Roberson and a nice run. That's it.
Someone (couldn't hear) on D said "you're not giving us a chance today" and he's been coached (by coach McCoy mac-a-voy) that those days are a test of patience.

He explained how he relays info to McVoy not the Titans.

Vrabel wouldn't say it was a good day, he barely threw it but it wasn't a bad day and there are going to be times like that. He's glad Willis recognized it

Willis with an INT today on a bad bad throw Weaver easily picked off.
He responded with a beautiful deep ball to Moore for 70-80 yard gain and a few plays later he had another nice throw.

That's the response they wanted.
Spears dropped a gimme and Willis spoke to him after. That's the leadership he didn't show last year.

Still good strides for him.

Vrabel saying the D took a break after first team reps and put some things in to catch the offense off guard- INT and a sack. Willis got everyone together and came back.

So this is the next step for his development and NOT where Levis is at at all.

Seeing more n more structure to developing a QB every couple days. London is having an impact and clearly a good hire.

It's abnormal in a good way. Very obvious, no one needs to read into anything, coaching up mistakes and training is not letting the young guys get too down on themselves or repeat bad habits. Very impressed with London.

Heckuva day today.

Willis struggled for a possession with the short game on one possession even hit Dillard's helmet.

Levis started red hot with those three TDs in red zone 7 on 7

11 on 11s

Willis settled down nicely then Levis simply cooled down to regular play.

They subbed the young QBs in one play after another and neither did much as the D stepped up.

RedZone again 11 on 11

Willis with three TDs then next time out a TD on first play so sorta four in a row.(two pass)

One designed run where the D read it and he faked and turned on the speed to beat two defenders. One where he scrambled, no one was open, so he ran it in.

Levis with another TD

Willis with a bullet to Roberson.

It seems that Racey is still struggling and each QB had to deal w that.

Posting same also in Levis thread

It reads like it was a heckuva competition today.

Did a very good job dealing with pressure as the DL destroyed the OL all day.
Made a great throw deep off back foot that Roberson pulled in.
Kept a play alive, TE Mack kept working and they turned a busted play into a 40 yard gain.
Had a couple good runs and once stopped.

None of this seemed possible last year so definitely progress.

In a closed practice today he made some throw that was great and Vrabel made it a point to bring it up.
London said he's doing great and stacking days and that's what they're really working on with the young QBs- day after day doing same things well not regressing. He's all over it.

London said it's a culture he's building with the staff and young players but also veterans. If they can't stack good days are they not applying something are they being given too much to learn? Said it's very important tactic to off-season work that Arthur appreciated and Titans wanted to instill since day one, maybe his interview. I know this is a Willis thread but this will be something to chew on with all offensive players- are they doing well at all things or doing just this n that well and still being spoon fed.

London mentioned his off-season work doing everything that's been asked of him and it's paying off.

I don't think I've ever noticed "great" as an adjective for anything Malik does in two years so that's new.

On pods they're talking of him still patting the ball showing he's still got some nerves. Little late on some reads and while he's firing it and completing a throw it's a much easier play if he recognized it earlier.
He's running a bunch for Kelly, year two, or more comfortable. He knows when now and it's been stressing the defense. Defense was winning big, lot of sacks, his runs worked so well they had Tannehill running and exposed something the D needs to work on.

Still not there as a leader. Far improved but doesn't have the command the others do. After Levis did well and took second team reps, he was loud n commanding and played great and they were all over him "that's how it's done" manner

4 for 9 yesterday in pouring rain.
No QB runs allowed
Had a beautiful throw to Burks and a Phillips drop.
Same results as other QBs but he looked comfy and possible "mudder" dopey conversations followed

Had a beautiful throw to Roberson, had a wobbly bad throw to Whyle.
Responded to end zone drop in red zone and defense winning the day with one designed run for a TD then avoided sack and ran another for a TD.
Sounds like he and Levis did ok with defense winning the day- don't do anything stupid type thinking.
All in all unexciting day

Tapping football habit has been creeping back and evident today. Reporters highly critical of it being amateurish, coaches don't seem to care. Radio discussion end result if WRs see it and come back and get a completion then it worked fine. Shows thinking. Reporters not noticing anyone open either. Amateurish but probably fine.

Willis took a delay of game penalty in two minutes drill.
Barking at out of position players but can't take a delay of game there.
Reporters all over that negatively, asked Vrabel two questions about it and he was annoyed at the first one. He said they'll look at tape and obviously want him to snap it.

I'm guessing this isn't a Malik prob but instead a couple players unprepared. It's practice and the QB clearly objected to how guys were lining up.

As he needs to develop as a leader, this probably helps him in a "should have listened to me" way. He could be dead wrong too and bonehead move here but it doesn't usually work that way when a QB is telling guys they're not lined up right. QB always wins.

@Bri Did you move and or change teams? (Thought I remember you being a DC guy)

Also, appreciate the updates.
I grew up a Pats fan in NY NJ area. USA today editor asked me to pick a few teams I knew the least about and Titans were one of them. He assigned me to cover them and....many years passed since

So I was totally wrong about it all. Sorry man. Could’ve sworn we conversed lot in the skins thread over the years. Maybe it’s a similar screen name or something. I also don’t see any avatar for you which is odd.

Vrabel asked of Malik's improvement again, he said there's a presence about him. You know when he's in the building. Ya know when he's there. He's fully engaged

Willis supposedly starting week one of preseason. (Tannehill hasn't played preseason in a few years)
Expecting Vrabel to confirm later this afternoon.

People are starting to count there's only this many days left in camp.

Levis (third string) INT then Tannehill INT and then Willis becomes the settle it down guy. That's new.
He had a pretty bomb to Moore then a nice pass to Whyle.
It reads like Willis' day today.

Missed the game, will watch

HC fill-in said it was expected with the progress and mistakes. Malik would come to the sideline and say I should have done this or done that.

Vrabel and Titans staff clearly got through to the young QBs. Very matter of fact speaking and owning mistakes and complimenting others when they do well. I rrrreally like to see that. Egos are difficult to deal with sometimes and I thoroughly appreciate young players with their heads on straight.

Willis far better statistically than Levis but more opportunity.

I don't know that not having tape on the D is a disadvantage when the D doesn't have tape on you. Seems even.

By all accounts Willis was far better than last year and want to see next week.

The backup lines were atrocious allowing seven sacks and shockingly high number of pressures. It's really a shame to have to evaluate the young QBs under extreme duress and not during a typical game scenario

I thought he looked decent.
Yeah, took some sacks but seems more prepared than Levis.
Why? Are the Titans bad at developing QBs in the sense it takes long?
I like the progress of year two for Malik but we're not hearing of Levis like some guy they traded up for
I think it’s a case of Malik in his 2nd season vs a rookie. It’s a big adjustment. Malik didn’t look bad.

I think it has more to do with Willis and Levis both being fringe NFL starter quality prospects to begin with.

Clifford and Stennett and whatshisname for Cleveland looked good. They weren't rated as high as Levis.
Admittedly I don't understand why Clifford wasn't if Levis couldn't beat him out but...

DTR in Cleveland is a fun player. I really wanted him to the Lions. I thought he was a better pro prospect than Willis or Levis. He’s just undersized. Problem with Stetson Bennett is he’s so old already. I’m not sure he has much more room to grow.

(Stennett? Oof I needed coffee then thanks for seeing thru that)

Here's the pressure rates (percents)
Bennett 49
Levis 42
Willis 37
Clifford 30

Bennett and Clifford were sooo much more comfortable and poised looking and I'm repeating just because those numbers weren't what I expected either

Tim Kelly saying he played fast, they wanted him to play his speed and he did.
Improved decision making, saw some things need to work on and...yeah he played fast

Watching I liked him like a new toy.
He's out Randall or Lamar or Vick or somesuch.

I see the patting the ball and the antsy feet but that's what mobile QBs do. They wanna run every down, coach says stay in pocket and wait til last second, so they start to get fidgety. It looked typical. His throwing motion was generally like everyone does so that's way better than last year. He wung it on one pass but it was completed so who cares.

That first drive and that QB run with just a little fake the defender fell for. That's the only time I thought this is a future quarterback. I really strongly felt a novelty gimmicky feel watching him.

I will add one thing. If the line is atrocious, as it has been many days in camp, he might have a better shot at making plays than Tannehill. I hate this though, so sick of bad lines. Can Ryan be in shotgun every third down? How do you play the better QB if he has to run for his life every drop back? I've got some pathetic well get creative somehow thoughts. They sorely need to trade for a couple linemen.

Malik started red hot then hit a cold spell throwing an INt and few bad throws. Staff was all over him and he was able to calm down and make a nice touch pass.

His time per pass was 1.5 seconds faster than last year in pre week one.

Kelly blamed four sacks on the backup QBs taking too long

NFL Network’s Gregg Rosenthal reports Titans QB Malik Willis is likely to win the backup role over rookie Will Levis.
While this shouldn’t be considered overly shocking after Levis fell down the draft board in late April, both quarterbacks appeared to be in a legitimate camp battle for the backup role this summer. The biggest fallout out of Titans camp this offseason is the assumption that starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill is in little jeopardy of losing the starting job any time soon. Tannehill has remained a steal in early fantasy drafts the entire offseason.

Vikings reporters impressed w Malik.
Flores sending D to stop the run and he keeps lofting it to WRs deep.
Expect more honest D after a break.

The Titans O Line has been getting some shade from analysts...perhaps they are wrong.

Couple beauties, couple INTs- one atrocious.
Settled down
Moved the team well enough.
Bad snap play, Vikes in there, he picked it up and took off for a huge gain.
Got an air fist bump from Kelly for throwing one away and spiking another.

Sounds very much like learning- progress, regress back to progress

With Levis' issue? Injury? He may play three quarters on Saturday.
Titans starters expected to play a quarter but very much up in the air after Burks injury and caution

Seems like he has a big headstart on winning the QB2 job?

He still has a leg up on Levis.
Not sure what was to happen next week. Maybe Levis was to be the 2 with the Pats (I forget who next joint practice is with, think it's them) and maybe play more in this game? The injury is poor timing for Levis.
He had a couple days early in camp where he got time with the twos after playing so well and he hasn't gotten back.

The Titans are very patient now. There's zero displeasure. He's coming along. I just think it's probably been a possibility of a learning year since they drafted him.

If he plays most of the game, I expect him to be the top DFS player.
I expect some highlights and some dunderhead mistakes.
"Year two" is hardly year two for him experience wise. He's got tons to learn still.

I think he's gonna stir up the usual fantasy debate of a mobile QB versus pocket QB when people pick WDIS this week. I think that line guarantees he has to run for his life a few times and is often under pressure.

Harrison or Roberson are probably deep recipients while Whyle is probably top "receiver."

Play DFS at your own risk but...pretty confident he's the man this week

Done watching
He's so fast.
I still question decision making and WRs getting open and the line but I come back to his decision making.
When he's on or the run game is on, they fly up the field fast. Nothing like plodding offense we've seen for years.

I don't know on this guy.
He has some elite traits that few have had. He scrambled and stopped to look around. He stopped! Then he either threw or ran. So few are so athletic they can pull that off.
One run was OMG fast.
Another run was pretty ordinary with one move but probably very good for the QB position.
That cannon of an arm.

He throws a way way way prettier ball now. I saw him use proper technique and not do so but geesh it's always a perfect spiral.

He really reminds me of a young Vick. The presence and freakishness.

The INTs are stupid. What are you even thinking? Bad bad.
A few times he ran into trouble not away from it.
The OLBs look positioned to stop him, a little wider than normal, and the OL ate them up. There were some huge holes; some I thought he should have run through and was "are they run blocking or pass blocking" and I'm not sure he ran the play.

The way he messes up and they get it back and Chestnut run for 30 or he does and then a pass for 25. It's like while I'm shaking off my unhappiness he's rolled them down the field so fast.
Does that make up for it?

Vick got better but I always banked on him making a mistake and figure I was right more than wrong. I remember defenses sitting back to either stop his run or feast on his mistake.
I think Malik's gotta fall in love with the short dink n dunk game or else he's going to be the same (lesser til or if he proves it).

There's going to be a lot of times that mistakes can't happen and chances can't be taken and he just needs to move up the field. I don't have any confidence he can do that.

I wanna see plodding Henry offense with him suddenly bursting for a run or hitting a deep ball then back to plodding. Can that work? Where he's like the spark?

I do not know on this kid. There's so much there and so much not there yet. He's such a contradiction.

His skillset is tantalizing from a fantasy perspective. If he became a polished passer to go along with the athleticism that's top tier fantasy QB upside. The fact that they drafted another QB a year after him, spending even more draft capital, muddies the dynasty/keeper waters a bit though.

Few articles into reading everyone and they're saying his decision making regressed last night and hasn't been like that in months.

He seemed uncertain last week at times so I'm not sure I roll with that thinking

He's a top ten rusher in preseason right now. An early Justin Fields stat line with woeful passing and 91 yards rushing.

I watched this again.

That's not the same offense as week one and I also switched to see and it's so different. Many of the WR routes are no cut routes. I gotta wonder why they did that.

Vrabel said he did what we needed him to do and we got the win pretty convincingly like everyone is dumb for being critical of Malik.

They ran for 300 ish yards. Vrabel agreed w host that it was a big step up for the line and they needed to be tested.

When he was asked about Malik's time to throw being so high, he replied back with how do you use that stat when they're running around and how they have an analytics department for that and it wasn't one of their concerns at all.

He gave nothing, as he does. But I guess that he was pleased is something.

Of course I invite anyone to watch it again, flip to week one, and back. It's not the same offense at all. I just can't put my finger on what they were doing
