QB Marcus Mariota, WAS (1 Viewer)

According to Ben Volin of the Boston Globe, the Titans' starting quarterback job "looks surprisingly wide open."

Mariota has reportedly done little to assert himself in camp this summer and is quickly losing ground to former Dolphins starter Ryan Tannehill, who completed 7-of-11 throws for 84 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's preseason loss to New England. Volin also cited a recent ESPN report that suggested Mariota is "no lock" to start while noting that some of the team's coaches prefer Tannehill. Even if Mariota is able to hold off Tannehill for the starting job, Volin said he figures to be on a "short leash." Heading into the final year of his rookie contract, the former Heisman Trophy winner could be nearing the end of his Titans tenure.

It's weird how massachusetts reporters show up and make up stories while no one in Tennessee thinks this is true not even Tannehill

yeah this is kind of dumb. Guy from out of state comes in and makes wild suggestions based off what hes seen in  a handful of practices

There hasn't been an update here in a while-

Titans snap counts are wayyyy up. Two games in and Smith's offense definitely shows a better rhythm, some urgency, and NOT the slow plodding style.

His love for Delanie is still strong and ya gotta remember that since Delanie has fallen in FF drafts. (Little concerned Walker has to help while Lewan is out)

His footwork was off the first preseason game and many noticed. Looked like rust to me. Fine in second game. Cosell did call it very concerning that a QB in year five would have footwork issues BUT he also said how alot is blown off week 1 of preseason.

When under pressure, he moves a few steps to the left or right and this was something he wasn't allowed from prior OCs. He had to step backward but his comfort is in sideways steps. Concern of his he brought to Smith day one.  I think this matters with a mobile QB. It might be over my head some, planting the feet the right way, but you can't miss that he looks much more comfy moving sideways than moving backward.

He's not throwing soft passes. no lobs to run under, no soft placement by sideline. Everything has some oomph to them.

Loves Humphries. At times Mariota to Humphries and Brady to Edelman look about the same. QB seems too focused on one guy, yet he's getting open quick so who cares. Snap N throws, snap and throw after two steps...it's quick to Humphries.

Unsure how Humphries and Walker mesh in as they both play over the middle AND in the slot. People keep forgetting Walker gets snaps in the slot.

Smith has them taking deep shots and Mariota throws a good deep ball and is capable of throwing it deep on the run. Davis and Brown have struggled to get open deep regularly, but Taylor has and lit up the Pats one day. If those two could figure it out, their size would make this difficult to stop.

Titans stunk on two opening drives that were scripted long before- by Vrabel who said he will concede to Smith. Vrabel sent them out an unexpected third time and they marched right up the field the third drive.

PLENTY of action along the sidelines. This is definitely not the same offense we've hated. They use the whole field side to side and short/long

Lewis allowed 12-15 sacks last year, depending where you look. Smith doesn't like the dump off pass and has said several times that there are other ways to get rid of the ball and better short passes to get rid of it quickly. Vrabel discussed this too and there's a definite change here that you can see in preseason from all the QBs. The RB has to pick up the blitzing defender- no question, no reading the D, it's automatic. Consequently, they're running more screens with big WRs and linemen running to that side. They also brought back a college-esque run and pitch by Mariota to the RB.

Davis, Tajae, (and now Brown) have gotten long looks and taken too long to get open. There is still this issue where you(the fan) can swear the OC wants the ball to one guy but he's not getting open. The comforting thing (and I can't overstate this) is Smith is oh so clearly making a change the next play. You can see Davis can't get past someone on a straight line and the next play he's cutting across or curling back.

Pats were annoyed with his throwaways in practice. Mariota has never been a QB to throw the ball away on purpose. This is new.

Smith is the FedEx billionaire's kid and was gifted a position with the Redskins after college and NFL camps. He is clearly intelligent, well-read, well-prepared and always adjusting. He may be a young inexperienced OC, but I am impressed for a change. Forget his daddy. A guy that goes two TE, three wide, four wide, two wide with H-back...he is thinking and working it as best he can. When they catch a rhythm, the announcers are pointing out that he had the perfect counter move ready like going deep and throwing a quick underneath pass. There's something intelligent to this OC. He will probably make mistakes and maybe even a disaster of a game, but he seems so much more impressive than Whis, Robiske, and Mularkey.

Run heavy offense- when Smith talks, yep they plan to run a lot but it's like I was just saying- he says how it will open up other things. He doesn't speak often but when he does it is always point-counter point.

Marcus Mariota's job security: I don't put much stock into the concept that Ryan Tannehill could start for the Titans in Week 1, if only because no local Tennessee reporters have mentioned this is remotely possible, and Titans management has declared there is no quarterback competition. Even the comments by ESPN's Dianna Russini last week that helped start a firestorm around this topic cited "a tone in Tennessee right now that this coaching staff just wants a quarterback to go out there and be the best quarterback there," rather than sourced reporting.

That doesn't mean Mariota's job is ensured that far past Week 1, and this month probably hasn't helped. I found it interesting that Paul Kuharsky, who has covered every day of Mariota's career as a beat writer, said this week he's "closer to done with Marcus than I've ever been" because of an uninspiring offseason. It's not that Tannehill is consistently out-shining Mariota in practice. It's that there isn't an obvious separation between the two players. This isn't a huge surprise, and it's worth wondering if the Titans will one day view Mariota, the second overall pick in 2015, like the Dolphins came to view Tannehill before trading him away this year: as a homegrown quarterback who couldn't push the organization beyond spinning its wheels.

Marcus Mariota failed to complete any of his three pass attempts in the Titans' third preseason game.

It was ugly, and it certainly won't quiet down the talks of this quarterback battle being "wide open." Tannehill has simply outplayed Tannehill this preseason, so the only thing keeping Mariota as the starter is his familiarity with the team. For Mariota to make it through the entire season as the Titans' starting quarterback, he'll need Corey Davis and his offensive line to step up their games. Mariota hasn't elevated his teammates through four NFL seasons, and we can't project that happening in Year Five.

The Browns are an awful matchup for the Titans. I fully expect a ton of Derrick Henry if they can. The Titans have three linemen in new positions, Lewan suspended, and they have to face a super DL. The Browns WRs are awesome deep and the Titans were stout on Byard's side and 30th on Vaccaro's side so there's a real hole there. It could be a passing duel and Mariota has to step up and match Baker. I think he's a fun DFS lottery ticket, don't start him in FF, and wait one week and holy wow do I hope he stays upright and makes it through.

Arthur Smith is becoming the talk of the NFL as much as one can be without ever calling a game. His offense, of course, has to produce now.

I love everything I hear about the offense and in the videos

Still though, this is on Marcus. I'll forgive a slow start with a new offense and no Lewan, but he has to make a career for himself this year. I think he can and I think he will. For FF, I've taken him last and like 18th round. Other times he's gone earlier and I miss out. I have tons of nerves for FF about him. However, every year some QBs get hurt early in FF and you're scrambling for a QB replacement. I think Mariota is the guy. From week 5 on, I think he starts to shine

I've been wrong on him A TON and I understand apprehension to believe me on this but...he's available late and cheap in trades and let's not go pretending you're trading Big Ben or Aaron for him. Look for a cheap trade or WW add soon. I think it's worth the (minimal) risk. If not, so what, we play the WW game all year anyway

oof.

eta - if he runs A LOT, maybe.  That arm sure as heck isn't getting him there.

beer me.

I have a lot more hope for him as a NFL QB than a FF QB at this point.  I'll continue to think he can win a Super Bowl, if he stays healthy.  But that's a really big IF.

"Rex Ryan on @Midday180: #Titans should let Mariota run. Teams will line up for him if TEN doesn't sign him. He's better than anyone I ever had at QB."

If you treat Marcus like the last pick I stated above or the 15th+ round pick you have....that is entirely different context than taking a stud QB

have always liked the kid. Injuries and 197 offenses have crushed him and affected his confidence. Hopefully having a back-up push him will make him get more aggressive.

Marcus Mariota completed 19-of-28 passes for 154 yards and one touchdown while adding 32 rushing yards on five carries in the Titans' Week 2, 19-17, loss to the Colts.

The Titans didn't have a 26+ yard play, and their dink-and-dunk attack was forgettable against this Colts' zone defense. This offense is very boring, largely because Mariota takes too many sacks and has hit-and-miss accuracy. For fantasy purposes, Mariota needs to do more with his legs to become a weekly streamer in good matchups. Mariota shouldn't be started next week in most leagues against the Jaguars, who did a great job limiting the Texans in Week 2.

Oh the good old days of arguing about who was going have the better career between Marcus and Jameis. Who would have thought we were arguing about who was going to be 31st vs 32nd?

Marcus Mariota (quad) was listed as a DNP for Titans' practice Monday.

The Titans didn't actually practice Monday, but they're still required to submit an estimated report. The injury certainly isn't ideal, particularly on a short week, although it doesn't seem to be serious considering Mariota didn't miss a snap during the Titans' Week 2 loss to the Colts. Regardless, Mariota holds little fantasy value in this run-first offense that has asked him to throw just 24 and 28 times in Weeks 1 and 2, respectively. Ryan Tannehill will get the start under center if Mariota is ultimately unable to suit up.

104.5 The Zone's Paul Kuharsky reports Marcus Mariota's quad injury is "not serious."

In other words, Mariota will be fine for Thursday night's tilt with the Jaguars despite being listed as "DNP" for Monday's estimated practice. Mariota is a bottom-barrel, last-resort fantasy option in the deepest of leagues.

Marcus Mariota (quad) is practicing in full for Week 3 against the Jaguars.

Mariota's "injury" was never considered serious. Headed on the road for a short-week matchup with a decent defense, Mariota is a barely-there QB2 for Week 3.

Mariota always torches the Jaguars and will do it again on Thursday
He has averaged 185 (184.9) yards passing and 1 TD per game in his 8 games against JAX.

Granted, this may well what be Mariota "torching" someone looks like, relatively speaking.

-22/35/230 and 30 yds rush, pretty meh

-20/29 268/3Tds and 112 rush/TD so 4 TDs vs Jags

-18/22/270/2Tds

-Last year 12/18/100 yds, terrible game and he has a couple other duds but they were in the last week of the season and I just don't weigh those games as much, last week of the season many starters are gone and teams are sometimes winding it down.

He has had a mixed bag vs Jax but with the Jags having so much internal problems you might think Mariota has a better than average chance to hit some of these numbers he has hit before. Mariota is not a great option most weeks but he has a great running game and weapons around him, he can score TDs with fewer attempts than other QBs.

For those sustaining a major injury at QB, this is a guy you have to explore.

I do like the Jags at home this week though if I were a betting man.

Marcus Mariota completed 23-of-40 passes for 304 yards in the Titans' 20-7, Week 3 loss to the Jaguars, adding six rushes for 34 yards.

Throw out the box score. Anyone watching the game saw a bench-worthy performance. Showing truly zero play-making ability, Mariota was passing up chances and big plays and botching easy ones in equal measure. A horrendous offensive line performance — nine sacks — didn't help, but Mariota made things easy and predictable for the defense. He looked like a player who has lost all confidence, and he looked like a rookie on the Titans' final drive, pointlessly milking clock and doing a terrible job getting the offense lined up and ready to go. The fifth-year pro seems shellshocked. The 1-2 Titans have 10 days to decide if they want to go to Ryan Tannehill for Week 4 in Atlanta.
