QB Marcus Mariota, WAS (1 Viewer)

(Rotoworld)Marcus Mariota has reportedly played "mistake-free football" through the first two days of Titans camp.

Analysis: Dating back to the spring, we've yet to see an explicitly negative practice report on Mariota since the Titans drafted him. This latest report comes via the Titans' website, where new team writer Jim Wyatt states he's been impressed with Mariota's "poise, decision making, and accuracy." The true test for quarterbacks comes in live settings versus pass rush, but by every account Mariota is off to an overwhelmingly positive start.

fumble today on handoff to Sankey (deemed both their fault, but Sankey of course gets the blame)

8000 great passes mentioned, few mention a good amount of "off" throws

He ran when he wasn't supposed to and I guess he'd have been "decked" in a game if he did that so it got some attention

Threw the ball away on purpose and it was comical how many fans weren't used to a QB doing that-thanks Locker and VY

Placement is fantastic

Deep throws-either they are showing off the fantastic arms of their QBs or they plan to go deep a lot this year

I think him leading his throws to Wright is a gigantic deal for FFers to notice. I want to see it in a game, but if Wright doesn't have to stop and catch it you gotta give his projections a considerable uptick

The Bucs and Titans are pretty low on the ESPN totem pole. It will be a nice change of pace for their fans. That being said I rarely put ESPN on anymore for anything other than baseball and MNF.

Marcus Mariota gives Titans brief scare after colliding with scout at practice:

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/13373727/marcus-mariota-gives-tennessee-titans-brief-scare-colliding-scout-practice

Excerpt:

The No. 2 overall draft pick out of Oregon finished the practice completing 11 of 15 passes in team and seven-on-seven drills combined. He is the only one of four Titans quarterbacks who has yet to be intercepted even once through four practices of training camp.

But seeing Mariota go down worried not only fans but the Titans. This franchise started three different quarterbacks last season because of injuries in a 2-14 season.

"Marc, I mean he's a tough guy," tight end Delanie Walker said. "When I [saw] it, I was shocked at first. But, again, like I said, he's a tough guy. I wasn't too worried about it. He [jumped] right up and went to the huddle. He was smiling, so that's a good sign."

Remember how everyone had 10k issues with him behind center and staying in the pocket and the whole spread versus pro style offense thing? Mariota has been so exceptional, it's as if people forgot all that.

Big kudos to this kid

To be able to practice and practice on your own even and do so well you make people forget a problem...that's a pretty special work ethic

I'm sure he's put work in and I'm sure he's gotten better, but people forget a lot of things this time of year until the real games start.

Said LeBeau to Jim Wyatt of the Titans' website: “Our package is extensive, and from that standpoint we are showing him everything. I don’t think he is going to go into a game and say, “Jeez, I’ve never seen that before, or something like it.'"
LeBeau not taking it easy on Mariota.

I wonder about these puff pieces sometimes.....- is the defense that crappy?

- is Mariota playing it too safe?

- is the coaching staff being too "kid gloves" with him?

- or is he really looking that good?
**** LeBeau said recently that they were giving him a ton of different looks on defense so he wouldn't be surprised by anything in the regular season. Their defense is terrible though, so who knows. I'm not going to go overboard, but not throwing a pick yet is pretty impressive imo.

He only threw like 14 ints in college or somesuch.

Their LBers are very good and sorely underrated. Casey is a stud. Hill is great or soso depending on the day but most of all a 4-3 DT playing NT. Blackson has been a surprise and if he can continue to do well, they have a nice front seven. The pressure has been there and they're getting to him because most of the RBs are getting blasted for poor blitz pickups.

The secondary last year was pitiful and Michael Griffin had 20000 tackles as the last line of defense. He lost his freedom last year and had to be back deep just in case or double because of weak CB play etc. When he can truly play safety, he is a top player. Age wise he might not still be. It's a real shame for his career to be spent in Ed Reed and Polamalu's conference and IMO amazing he made the pro bowl twice. Twice he, not one of them, made it. Anywho...there's concern about his age and losing a step. Searcy had some good days and some where he didn't. They signed a Browns backup S (started a handful of games) and in just a day or two he's got people talking. They should be fine at Safety

CBs were terrible last year. I called them the closest fans as they ran right with the WR but didn't do a darn thing like swat at the ball, hit the WR or try to tackle them for a couple seconds. Cox is a nice addition and he's got some bulk to him which is oddly nice to see. Still McCourty is considered the #1 and I am desperately anxious for him to hit his potential because he's stunk. Blihdi is called bleeding for a reason, also totally not hitting his potential.

They added two UDFA CBs and both are getting some love from TC.

A friend of mine said "how good are your starters if two UDFAs can make this much noise" and that's kind of hung with me.

Recently both got time with the 1s on different days and did well. Coty Sensabaugh can play S and CB and is like their Vincent Fuller from years ago. Handy but not the best at either.

I'm fearful the CBs stink besides Cox. It was effortless last year to complete a pass.

Lebeau has a say, a big say here so we'll see. He wasn't pleased and they improved the next day. There's definitely something in the works.

As far as Mariota, yeah could be the weak CBs and a bit of a gift there. I am firm in stating no team could cover all of Turzilli, DGB, and Hunter. Huge fast guys while the league has mostly small CBs. Wright has many NFL Ds play zone and not try to match his quickness at all, giving him the short pass then hitting him. BUT this is the NFL even if you say Calvin is uncoverable, someone's got to and he can't be allowed 300 yards and 50 catches in one game. They aren't Calvin.

They could totally trade a WR for a CB if only...

The game is so much faster and remember all the talk of spread versus NFL O? Huddle versus Shotgun? Kurt Warner said something like "Rookie's from the spread don't know what they'll do wrong, til they do it." So there's that and Lebeau and Horton throwing the kitchen sink at him. I think most QBs would have thrown an INT by now and it's very good for a rook.

He hasn't always rocked in the two minute drill or when Whisenhunt puts them in 3rd and long. This is where he has to grow and do it fast. That's make or break situations for QBs and teams even.

Mett is doing very well, even a day he was clearly better. He is not competition but for pride, so that's good for Mariota.

I'm amazed that people are surprised that a guy with a career touchdown to interception ratio of 105 to 14 isn't throwing interceptions.

I'm not amazed at all that you put stock into training camp stats.

we'll see how he does vs. non vanilla D's

Even Andrew Luck and Peyton Manning took time to adjust at this level.
Absolutely but the kid is a quick learner, he's showed us that. The INTs have always been a skill or his efficiency. Everything is a step here.

He's not only got all the preseason games and then NFL games to learn, but he's gotta beat top DCs that drool at the thought of rookie QBs. He's gotta get up from a JJ Watt hit and if Clowney actually plays well maybe him too. There's a long way to go but his ability to learn and adapt is excellent thus far.

Maybe more important or right along side the INTs is his terrific ball placement. The number of QBs in the NFL that can regularly lead a WR with the ball is way too low nowadays. As such, this is a significant attribute to his game as is the running.

The best thing is the D is getting grumpy about the no INTs. So while I was meh to the whole thing, now I'm loving it. "Just training camp" becomes something a little more serious or challenging when all the defenders think their pride is getting stepped on. I'd like him to hold on another week. The D does need to raise their game-significantly, and it's gotta be more challenging for him.

The last practice McBride, Sankey, Cobb, Hunter, and DGB got blown up by big hits. I am not the injury pity guy so I love reading that there is some spirited play.

Cobb got it going after a clothesline by Bleeding. Hunter actually held onto the ball.

I'm afraid once they get an INT the intensity goes down and we hear how they don't want guys to get hurt and blah blah blah. I like it when they practice all out and NO I don't think most NFL teams do. Their D was bad, Lebeau's there to correct mistakes as is Horton(two gems) so make the mistakes. You can't intercept a rookie? Ha you stink. A rookie WR burned you deep. You stink. Let it get at their pride...this is everything they need.

The camp battles on defense aren't even really for starters, a couple. It's backup battles to make the roster and be first man up. They need this.

Winston-Mariota? Who is better. DGB or Evans? Who is more of a beast? Learn now because it starts week one and there will be a Tampa CB all too anxious to intercept the TEN rook too.

probably to 1 and 2. Doubt #3 but don't know for sure.

The guy is essentially the opposite of Jay Cutler. If anything, Titans fans will wish he took more chances with his arm.

OK, really bad start but lets see how he does now after the opening jitters.

He didn't play from behind very much in college but had to come back in the National Championship game and he didn't give up but fought back and now he's connected on three completions in a row.

Don't judge too soon based on the fugly start. Lets see what the kid does.

He's playing against the 2's right? Looked like a deer in headlights against the 1st string defense. It's to soon to judge though obviously.
