QB Michael Penix Jr., ATL (1 Viewer)

How long before Penix is starting in Atlanta?
:oldunsure:

-Cousins was lined up in the shotgun a lot because he's not fully healed, he can't move
TJ Watt and the Steelers decided they could tee off
They tried to protect Cousins and it didn't help their offense.

Penix should be starting if Cousins isn't 100% but then how do you go back to Cousins if Penix looks good.

PHI, KC and NO is going to be ugly, really ugly for them. Then TB and that might not be easy either. Maybe they throw Cousins to the wolves and go to Penix after week 5.

TBH their first 10 games look rough.

I can't believe the Cousins Achilles talk wasn't more of an issue coming out of camp.
There's no way Cousins looked that bad yesterday and looked great in camp.

Yet I don't recall a single report questioning his achilles recovery.

I have Penix in my SF Dynasty. They should start him week 2.
Honestly, as much as I like Penix and am rooting for him the longer he sits the better. Long term success is the aim here and I think the longer he sits the better for his development.
I think this is excellent for his long term outlook - to sit and learn all this time especially from a pro like Cousins is huge. I doubt cousins makes it healthy through next season so he'll get his chances

If they don't win a playoff game this year I find it unlikely Cousins will be the starting QB to begin the season, healthy or not. Penix looks the part and he won't be getting any younger. Cousins will also be 37.

When 2026 rolls around, ATL fans are gonna appreciate that Penix draft pick. I'd rather have him than any of the QBs in the 2025 draft.

The Michael Penix pick is looking better each week.
I mean, maybe. Penix could also suck, and we could be asking why they didn't take Bo Nix. Or JJ McCarthy.

That's sorta the thing for me, is I think Cousins has played benchable football, and if he isn't benched that gives me concern about Penix, because he wasn't a project, and should be ready to go.

Ultimately, I see no reason to stick with Cousins, take away the 2 Tampa games, and he's having a horrific season.

The same people would have been questioning the pick because of Kirk Cousins.
Whatever Penix ultimately becomes, taking a QB last spring looks better and better.
Those people maybe should have been slamming the Falcons for signing Cousins, which looks like a mistake

NFL on ESPN
"You're throwing away a season where not only you have a chance to win the division, but you could potentially go farther if you see something with the young quarterback."

@minakimes thinks the Falcons should play Michael Penix Jr. this season 👀

Bryce Lewis
ESPN’s Mina Kimes & Dan Orlovsky discuss Kirk Cousins and the #Falcons offensive struggles 👀:

Mina: “Watching Kirk, I felt like his physical limitations are holding this offense back. It just doesn’t look right. They drafted Michael Penix Jr. at No. 8 overall. I criticized the decision and I will criticize it even more if they don’t give Penix a shot this season if this continues.”

Dan: "On the Penix front, I think it's at least a conversation in Atlanta right now. As for the offense, let me be very clear: you can't run the offense you want to run (play-action) in the pistol. It doesn't work. Make a decision, Zac."

Falcons' Kirk Cousins not in danger of being benched for rookie QB Michael Penix Jr. despite recent skid

Excerpt:

The No. 8 overall selection in the 2024 draft has sat behind Cousins all season and barely seen the field, even in the preseason. Penix has made two appearances in blowout losses, completing three of five passes for 38 yards in 20 total snaps. Each of the southpaw's completions went for first downs.
Penix, 24, offers Atlanta something Cousins currently does not: a downfield threat. The veteran is throwing 43% of his passes this season between 0 and 9 yards, per Next Gen Stats, the highest percentage of his career.
But the Falcons aren't ready for a big move to the big arm, at least it appears until next season when Penix will have a year under his belt and Cousins, then 37, will be in his last season of guaranteed salary in Atlanta.
"Michael Penix has really impressed," Rapoport reported. "[The Falcons] drafted him to be the quarterback of the future. That is just not now, and they do not believe this should be a discussion."

Someone will want to trade for Cousins, given the dearth of AB talent in the league
How much of his salary would the falcons cover? I’m sure a team would trade for him if the money was right but $40M, $57.5M x2 is more than he’s worth imo.

As a Falcon fan...I've been off the bandwagon for quite some time. I thought they moved on from Matt Ryan WAY too late and always felt they held him in higher regard than the rest of the league. And the Arthur Smith era was a dumpster fire pretty much from the get-go. In short, I don't think the Falcons have been honest with themselves as a franchise as to who they are actually are. 78-101 since appearing in the 2012 NFCCG.

When they signed Cousins, I thought 'more of the same'. He takes a franchise that has been a bottom feeder franchise aside from 1 aberration of a season to 'high-mid'. On a year to year basis and then when that year pops up...lets get back into the QB game. Fact is they aren't winning a SB IMO with Cousins.

Yes, Penix likely sits until 2026...but if he winds up starting that first year at the age of 26, then we're talking at least a decade of being a franchise QB if he turns into that. And most people very much like the player.

I'll put this back up here from April post-drafting of Penix. As far as trading for Cousins...the Falcons got a 3rd for Matt Ryan 3 years ago. Maybe they can replenish the 3rd they traded for Matt Judon's 3.5 sacks.

Until they remove that Rich McKay's wart from Arthur Blank's arse...this franchise will underwhelm.

Seriously, how do they not start Penix by now?
seems like vs the last place Giants would be the perfect opportunity to roll him out. Cousins has been beyond painful lately and is hurting the offense. Isn't this why they drafted Penix...so as not to be in another situation where they don't have an option at QB?

I'm just picturing the NYG DBs getting hands on all these passes and flipping them to the ATL receivers as to not accidently win the game.

I doubt it happens. It should, but I don't see a division title contender benching their starter for a rookie, even if the rookie is likely better.

The time to do it, was before the Raiders game. You get Penix 1st 2 starts against the Raiders and Giants, who are competing for the #1 pick.

I will say in Cousins defense, I don't put the Vikings loss on him at all. On the other hand, the Chargers loss was entirely on him.

I get that Cousins is almost done, if not done already. And I love the concept of the Penix draft pick ... Cousins being old, slow, and oft injured.

But does Penix give them a better chance to make the playoffs? There's no reason to tank for the #10 pick instead of the #15. So playoffs still has to be the goal. And Penix could be great, or he could be terrible. We have no idea. The coaches should. They see him in practice every day. Cousins is also streaky. He has 3-4 games in a row each season where he looks terrible. He can just as easily snap back into being a serviceable veteran to end the season.

I think you gotta roll w Cousins until the playoffs are completely out of reach. Then get Penix a game to see what happens.

WAS has to play PHI, ATL, and DAL. They could easily go 0-3 in those games. Meanwhile ATL gets CAR, WAS, and NYG. Three winnable games.

Any games ATL has won over the last 5-6 weeks have been IN SPITE OF Cousins (play)... not because of him. If the Raiders had a somewhat decent QB (and desire to win), they would have killed ATL last night.

It's weird, but apparently the only defense he can still play NFL QB against is Tampa Bay.

How much have you watched Atlanta recently?

ETA: That might have sounded snarky which wasn’t intended. From what I’ve seen, cousins isn’t helping the team.

I do understand team brass not wanting to throw Penix to the wolves in a playoff chas, but Cousins continuing to play surely has to be a business decision given his paycheck - much like Watson continuing to play until he got hurt.
