QB Michael Penix Jr., ATL (1 Viewer)

"I think they play to win, this isn't to see if they have their QB of the future. With just three games left in the season, the Falcons (7-7) playoff probability is 31%, according to NFL.com. ..."
I want to say it was a little more than a week ago Raheem Morris was cited as saying he didn't want to be "that guy" that started a rookie QB before he was ready. Assuming he meant what he said, do they have to play Penix this week? There's a lot tipping the Giants motive these days. Like last week, Cousins couldn't get them past New York? Perhaps faulty but I think Michael Penix is ready & he has said as much.

To me, decisive to nearly every outcome is which team is more often in the right play on both sides of the ball. It's huge! Coaches concerned with their young QB do him no favor subjecting him to tendency & discernible sets.

More recently:
"... Falcons offensive coordinator Zac Robinson said the team had a walk-through Wednesday with about 72 offensive snaps and that Penix threw the ball on every one of them. ..."
Pre-draft scouting reports:
"His ball-handling skills behind the line of scrimmage are underrated when it comes to hiding the ball on play-action fakes & fooling the defense into flowing the wrong way."
"Possesses enormous hands to control the football. Sees pressure creeping up pre-snap and gets himself protected."
A week 16 projection:
"Keep an eye on any increase in play-action fakes, specifically bootlegs. Conceivably, this offense will unlock a new element they have lacked all year."
According to NFL Draft Tracker Penix has 10.5in hands, which means he can fully grip & wave the ball all around, influencing defenders & opening up the backside of a play. A skill he's clearly aware of & has previously utilized.

Those three things, that he can just flick 50-yd frozen ropes, effectively sell misdirection in the backfield & read what he's seeing on the pre-snap! Those are attributes we should see utilized. I think the only reason Penix doesn't put up a 30-burger is because the Giants struggle offensively.

Just finished breaking down Penix Jr Film (will be on my YouTube later)

He has it. Decision-making, timing, accuracy, anticipation, velocity, layered throws, manipulating defenders with his eyes, standing and delivering in the face of pressure, and COMMAND

The Falcons got one

Penix can throw a deep ball into the paws of a puppy, he's going to have great numbers that will make the nerds break the spreadsheets out that still can't calculate the odds of getting a date on Friday night.

He looked pretty shaky to me until the final drive - that was impressive.

I know he wasnt considered a scrambling QB but he didnt move much at all - concerning?

I wasn't very impressed by what I saw. For being heralded as the most accurate QB in the class, I thought he missed a ton of open throws. Of course he's a rookie and was on SNF so I am not saying he's doomed, but I expected a better outing.

I’m not QB expert, but I watch plenty of football. His throws seem very flat.

I’m not even sure what I’m trying to say. Just watching last night everything seemed to look awaken coming out of his hand. Maybe it’s because I’m not used to watching a lefty as of late.

Why would it be concerning? He's not a runner, he never has been. He ran for 8 yards his final season at Washington. He ran for 92 the year before. He threw for over 9,500 yards those two seasons combined. What he does have is excellent pocket presence and so far that's been evident in the NFL. He took 0 sacks against the Giants in his first career start, and 2 in his second against Washington. These teams are no slouches when it comes to getting to the quarterback. New York is 9th in the league in sacks while Washington is 12th.

I was impressed with what I saw last night in a game against a very good team. Sure he missed some throws, but for the most part, they seemed like timing issues that should be cleaned up with practice and experience. He showed me a high level of confidence, an extremely live arm and poise that is rare for a rookie in his second start, which was also a must win game. Sure they lost, but that was as much on the defense as it was on him. Atlanta played great on defense in the first half, but didn't adapt to the changes Washington made at halftime.

I see a bright future for this kid. He certainly was not intimidated by the moment last night. Give him time to grow, he'll be fine.

He throws lasers. Arm strength like he has is rare. His deep balls looked fine other than the fact he overthrew the receivers on several occasions, but I see this being cleaned up with more experience and reps with his guys.

When I compare his tape to Justin Fields who throws a very flat ball, I see someone in Penix with much more accuracy and the ability to vary both the speed and trajectory of his throws as needed. (ETA The missed connections to Pitts down the right sideline late and a WR deep down the left earlier were good examples of this. He dropped the throws in a bucket and just missed on both. TBH, Pitts probably should have come down with the one to him)

For the most part, he seemed to hit his spots last night, just not his receivers if that makes sense. I can only think of one throw that was a wildly inaccurate and really had nothing to do with timing. It was a mid-level out to London I believe. The ball got away from him and the receiver had no chance getting to it. I say it was simply inaccurate because he threw the ball when the receiver was already breaking open and he had a clear line of site. He wasn't throwing the receiver open or before their broke like other misses in the game. The pocket was messy on that play, maybe that played a part with his footwork.

I don't want to sit here and pretend like he was a world beater last night, he wasn't, but I also can't forget that it was his second start in the NFL and there seemed to be a lot to get excited about.

I watched until the beginning on the 4th. I wasn’t crazy about the play calling. I wanted to see more bootlegs.
He ran a 4.46 at his pro day.

Penix looks good to me. He spins the ball real nice. Looks comfy in the pocket. He's not really fleet of foot though.

I've said it in other threads ... this will go down as the best QB draft class ever. Daniels and Nix already look excellent. Penix has unseated Kirk Cousins. Maye seems good although his team is not. He makes some impressive throws. Williams needs to improve, but his OL and coaching are so bad we don't have a good read on him yet. He has the tools for sure. McCarthy is a wait and see. That could easily be 5 or 6 franchise QBs in one draft.

Gonna need a lot of rings to beat the 2000 QB class.

The first time you see a close-up shot of hm with a football in his hands you’ll flip. It’s like any one of us with a softball in our hand.

Another heartbreaking OT loss for the rook where he didn’t get to touch the ball.

312 yards with 2 tds and another rushing in his third career start, not too shabby. Arrow is definitely pointing up, and I’m excited to see how he looks next season with a whole off-season as the guy.

then draft better defensive players, theres 2 sides to the field

Yeah, Penix has never been good at evaluating defensive players in the draft. I blame his hand size.
