QB Michael Penix Jr., ATL (2 Viewers)

Can’t believe they actually did it.

But for anyone that’s watched a Falcons game in the last month, they have to know this is the right decision. Kirk seems like an outstanding dude and he was once a good QB, but it’s just not there anymore. I don’t know if it’s completely gone or he’s still feeling the effects of the injury, but it’s been really bad.

Let’s see what the rook has got. Personally, I think he’s going to be pretty dang good out of the gate.

Didn’t expect it, but probably the right move. Maybe get some confidence at home against the Giants
I did expect it, but now have to resist the urge to start him over Purdy.
Tough call - it’s tempting but as mentioned above, I think they run the stuffing out of the ball in a plus matchup.
Agreed. How is the Giants run defense vs their pass defense?
Not really sure but if the Giants can’t move the ball, the defense will be on the field a lot.

Seriously, how do they not start Penix by now?
I doubt it happens. It should, but I don't see a division title contender benching their starter for a rookie, even if the rookie is likely better.

The time to do it, was before the Raiders game. You get Penix 1st 2 starts against the Raiders and Giants, who are competing for the #1 pick.

I will say in Cousins defense, I don't put the Vikings loss on him at all. On the other hand, the Chargers loss was entirely on him.

How bout now?

Penix is going to shine, can't wait.

I'm surprised they pulled the trigger. Its about time, it might be too late to salvage this season is the only issue.

Yep, but I think the players are really gonna rally behind Penix and this move. The game in Washington is gonna be tough, but at least he gets a perfect warmup at home vs the Giants (whose pass D is actually pretty good at #8, but still). Then they come home and will trounce Carolina.

He's had all season to soak it in and I bet he delivers in a big way. I don't even like Atlanta but I can't wait for this.

Man, who here has the stones and/or desperation to start Big Penix from wire to fire in your league semifinal this weekend?

I'm actually contemplating the idea over Purdy and ARich. Unlikely I do it, but definitely a significant greater than zero chance.

I’m tempted over Tua and arich.

I think Purdy will be a lot better this week, especially in better weather. I think he's a top-10 QB.

I'd be pretty wary of starting Penix this week. While he should offer more mobility and a bigger arm, I could still see the Falcons being VERY run heavy.

My mind is totally blown by the financial irresponsibility of Terry Fontenot. I really want to know what he was thinking when he was at the combined.

Possibly me. In a superflex with massively deep benches. Have Goff and Cousins. Stashed Penix a while ago. I’ve put in bids for both DTR and Wentz. Will have to see how that goes after tonight and then make a decision.

Wonder what this does to the WRs. Personally, I’m wondering about Mooney, who was great with Cousins for periods, but laid an egg last week. Injuries might have to necessitate me starting him. Now I look at my dynasty roster that was on bye last week I have, alongside others, Kupp/Mooney/Amari/Waddle as options 😂 combined score of zero !!

I’m considering Penix over Purdy (and Stroud), but I can definitely see Atlanta leaning heavily on the run and not asking Penix to do too much in his first game. Especially given the opponent.

Then again, Atlanta may want to show everyone why they drafted Penix and made the switch. Obviously, Penix wants to prove they made the right call as well.

Purdy is definitely the safer, and probably the “right” call, but the gambler in me really wants to roll the dice on Penix.

About time. Cousins has always been massively overrated, look at Darnold resurrecting his career with Jefferson. Big question is can they find a sucker to take Cousins contract next year that he agrees to since he has a no trade clause.

I would think the Falcon's would have to eat a SIGNIFICANT amount of the contract for anyone to even consider taking him on considering how he's played this year.

I wouldn’t get expectations too high fantasy wise in his first game, especially at home against the lowly Giants. The playoffs are undoubtedly first and foremost on team brass’ mind, and have to think they’re looking to control the time of possession running the ball and limiting turnovers. The latter part about turnovers is assuredly one of the primary reasons for making the QB switch.

I am totally surprised by this. They are still in the playoff hunt with bad teams to play (WAS hasn't beaten a team with a winning record yet). Plus Cousins had a revenge game coming up against WAS. They only do this if 1) cousins is hurt, 2) they are done with cousins. Which is gonna be an expensive contract to eat, or 3) they want to see if Penix is QB of future. Could be all 3.

They just barely beat a really bad team by the skin of their teeth that was on its third QB of the season and without their best defensive player on MNF because Cousins is completely inept at this point. Like, they could’ve easily lost that game in the final minutes.

I actually told my friend after that game that it’s going to be really strange seeing Cousins benched coming off of a win.

but they nearly lost to the Raiders who are a bad team. I think they were trying to wait on putting Penix in there as long as possible but Cousins has been sooo bad he's forced their hand. They had the luxury of almost not passing at all the 2nd half because the Raiders were so bad and they still nearly lost the game.

The Falcons are stupid. Guys coming off achilles injuries don't get fully back to 100% until the year after they return. Cousins will be 10x better next year for whomever he plays for, dumb to alienate him like this.

Tell that to the rest of that locker room after that Monday night game.

SF's #1 QB in the draft finally gets his shot...

Now, I concede I didn't expect Daniels to be what he has been... But Penix can be just as good, imo.

LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

10 times better I truely doubt it. Atlanta was stupid but Cousins is not without blame in the contract situation. He has been cashing cheques that his arm can't cash for years.

The media should be giving Kwesi his flower for drawing the line in the sand and saying no we won't give you a long term. Rick Spielman would be locking up Sam Darnold right now. I so glad he is no longer running this team.

Kwesi has seemingly done this back to back with both Cook and Cousins. Seems like he’s making some good business decisions and using his crew to truly evaluate talent and what it’s worth to the team.

But if you are Cousin why accept a trade under this kind of scenario? Why accept a trade anywhere unless the acquiring team is going to adjust your contract and add in more guarantees? I can't see it myself, feel like this will be like the Russell Wilson situation where some team gets Cousins next year for the league minimum because of the offsets in his contract. Which if works out like this means Atlanta would have paid him $90M for this one season.

Russ Wilson is a good comp for where this is going. Cousins probably not gonna find a PIT type coaching situation though.

Cousins is right at $330M made in the course of his career given his guarantees from ATL. That is some seriously incredible dough for 1 playoff win. Second most money made to date by an NFL player. Though that will change as some of these QBs get paid annual salaries ... ie Mahomes, Allen, etc, etc

he’s no spring chicken…arm was never very strong to begin with and now you can really see the decline

Hard to say with QBs. I know it’s a worse injury than an ACL tear. With an ACL you do usually see better play in year two, unless they tear everything (see Javante Williams). As for a torn Achilles, some RBs never make it back, but the QB position isn’t as demanding on the Achilles as it is for a RB, but I could be wrong. Cousins wasn’t mobile to begin with, so I’m not so sure the impact is as great as it would be on someone like Lamar Jackson.

I posted a study (I think in the NY Jets thread) where they looked at all the achilles injuries in the NFL. The study found (paraphrase): 1.) the injury reduced the playing careers of the players; 2.) reduced the amount of games they played per season post injury; and 3) players didn't return to pre-injury form until their second year after their surgery.

I'd say based on this: Rodgers, Cousins and Greenlaw could/should be back to pre-injury form sometime next season.

Some never do. I would venture to guess most never return to pre injury form. I’m speaking RBs and WRs, not QBs.

Here's the study (from 2019): https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articl...rall RTP rate was, play >1 season after injury.

CONCLUSION:
We found that 61.3% of NFL players were able to successfully RTP at a mean 11.90 months following a primary AT tear. Unlike other major injuries, draft round and position type were not significantly associated with likelihood of returning after an AT tear. Players who did RTP played in more games the season immediately preceding injury as compared with players who did not RTP, indicating that preinjury performance is an important predictive factor for RTP. Players who returned displayed a significant decrease in the number of games played in the return season when compared with seasons preceding injury. However, when we examined >1 season following return, AT tears appeared to not affect ability, as there was no significant difference in pre- and postinjury number of games played or started. Our findings suggest that players may return to preinjury performance levels if given the opportunity.

Tough call but I'm starting Penix over Justin Herbert in superflex. I have Jayden Daniels at the other QB spot. Herbert hasn't scored more than 20 points for me since week 11, and he's banged up and playing against DEN. Herbert is still the safe, conservative play but I need Penix's upside if I'm going to advance to the title game. It's a gamble but I suspect that Penix's floor is roughly equal to Herbert's ceiling this week. Time to roll the dice and go for the win.

Seems like it’s been awhile since the fantasy community has been this excited to see one single player make his debut. Has a lot of short-term and long-term fantasy implications for not just Penix, but also the entire Falcons’ offense.

It's the shiny new toy syndrome...compounded 10x by being late in the season when FF options are scarce and desperation is high

According to CBS Sportsline’s “optimal lineup,” Penix should be in at QB over Purdy and Stroud.

In my opinion, Penix boasts the best pure-arm talent of all of the rookie signal callers. However, I will not be surprised if the Falcons ease Penix into their game plan and lean heavily upon the running game this week. I am excited to see how Penix looks, but I think tempering our expectations in his first NFL start will be wise. I would need to be in a dire situation to consider starting Penix this week in a must-win fantasy game.

I think they play to win, this isnt to see if they have their QB of the future .

With just three games left in the season, the Falcons (7-7) playoff probability is 31%, according to NFL.com. A win in Week 16 against the New York Giants (2-12) would raise the chance to 38%.

Yes, ease the Penix in.

I’m getting Biggus Dikkus flashbacks
