QB Russell Wilson, NYG (4 Viewers)

I can't imagine paying someone that much money just to go away. Wow.

So, he can basically be picked up for the veteran minimum, right? Denver is on the hook to pay him like $39M this year. Anything he signs for gets taken out of that money.
Yep.

And really, 2 mill for Russell Wilson is a no brainer, but....I don't think the Broncos/Sean Payton are complete idiots.

And they are willing to eat 85 mill over two years to get rid of him? Like, how freaking toxic is this guy?

I wouldn't assume it shows he is toxic. His contract structure was really bad for Denver, at least Denver with Sean Payton.

IMO it appeared from day 1 that Payton didn't want Wilson, and I don't think he really did everything he could to create an offense that maximized Wilson's performance.

Wilson's contract was terrible for Denver. If he was on the roster on 3/17/24, his $37M 2025 salary became guaranteed, which would have resulted in a $55M 2025 cap hit.

it's $85 M cap hit, don't believe they're eating the money after this year, but someone can correct me if have that wrong,

I don't think Payton's an idiot but think he wanted to move on from Russ the minute he took the job.

They aren't "paying to get rid of him." The 85mm cap hit is sunk cost.

Compounding an already bad contract by keeping him and paying cash for 2025 when he clearly isn't the answer is what would really be dumb

No. 39 mill of that 85 mill is not sunk cost. That's this years money.

They are saving the salary next year, but if they cut him next year, it's 50 mill in dead cap. They are cutting him this year, and eating 85 mill. So they could start Russell Wilson this year, and then cut him next year, and eat 50 mill in 25/26.

They are paying him to leave.

Perhaps Wilson, Golden Tate and Marshawn Lynch can start a podcast. I wonder who would come out alive? My money would be on Lynch.

No. They aren't.

There is no new money out the door. Therefore they aren't paying him anything more than he already was owed from past decisions

That is the definition of "sunk cost."

A sunk cost is money that has already been spent and cannot be recovered.

There is going to be a lot more to this story. I have a feeling this is dirty with Payton and Wilson. Payton is no angel for sure. And Wilson is Wilson.

Denver Let's Ride!!!! Ride out of town with a bag of money. Maybe, there will be a documentary on how all this went down.

Well, I guess we’ll see if he actually signs a non- monetary deal. Would it be shocking if he still demands a $50M/per deal that goes beyond what Denver is responsible for? Not for me.

I certainly could see his ego needing a starting job guarantee and multi-year deal. Will he have a market though?

I think his point is they’re paying him the $39M regardless but by releasing him they’re paying it to NOT be on their team.

Yes, it’s a sunk cost, but they’re also paying him to go away. In essence.

Is that complete info on the decision, or would sunk costs increase if they waited an additional year?

He's correct, tho, that the 85 mill is what is guaranteed, and by cutting him, you don't increase that money. Even if the 24 money is NEW money, it's already guaranteed, so a sunk cost.

My thing is, they took on 85 mill in dead cap. If they KEPT him, then cut him next year, he'd have a dead cap of 50 mill. 35 mill less!!

The team is saving the cash next year, 37 mill, but instead of 85 mill over this year and next, and no idea who your QB is, they could roll with him this year, cut him next year, and spread 50 mill over 25/26.

It saves the team 37 mill, eventually, but man, it really feels like they punted and entire year.

@Just Win Baby had a nice post on it above. If he was on the roster when the new league year begins this year his contract ALSO guaranteed for 2025.

Is that GM still there? What a dope.

Completely agree with this. As a Broncos fan I would have preferred keeping him as a quality bridge QB. The way the new ownership is spending cash the extra 37 mil seems like a pittance

They would have to guarantee next year's salary. If they keep Russell, his 37 mill next year is guaranteed. They are basically cutting him to tear the band-off sooner rather than later.

The Broncos would rather eat 85 million now in cap space, than keep Russell for a year, and eat 50 mill next year.

This is how I understand it as well and think it’s the best decision. Draft a QB at 12 if you feel good about the guy or draft BPA and let this year be horrible and reap the rewards of a top 3 pick.

Well, I was thinking on the paying him not to play, which seems like a stance that presupposes the economics are no different whether he’s cut or not. That does not seem accurate if they gained avoiding 2025 guarantees.

The economics are definitely different.

They gonna pay him to play for someone else, this year or next. This way, it saves the owner 37 mill in cash next year, so clearly the Broncos ownership doesn't think my plan to keep him for a year, and pay him 37 mill more is a good idea. :D

Largest dead cap in NFL history: $85 mill--Russell Wilson
2 and 3 combined: $80.8 mill--Ryan and Rodgers.

Maybe not literally, but Russell certainly raped the Broncos.

He can't reasonably demand what the market will not pay. He may be unappealing to many, but he doesn't appear to be stupid. Nor are his agents.

Marshawn Lynch called him a bad teammate. I wonder what his Broncos teammates think of him?

Some of his teammates were quoted in the media after he was benched as supporting him and opposing his benching. Off the top of my head, I think Jeudy and Bolles were among his defenders.

That's because Payton is a narcissist **** who wants to win with everyone thinking he is the reason why. Between the buffoonery of Hackett and the fraud that is Payton, they have made it impossible for me to remain a Broncos fan for the forseeable future.

IMO, that makes the person that hired Payton an idiot. You don’t hire a guy who is supposed to be an offensive genius if he’s not even going to try to make his $200M QB workout.

Watson is worse. They are paying him a lot more, and its FULLY guaranteed, if he becomes a worse QB than I am, they still have to pay him like he's an all-pro.

Also, frankly speaking, I would rather have Russell Wilson than Deshaun Watson if money was irrelevant. Wilson played a lot better in 2023 than Watson has at any time in the last 3 years.

I think Russ could take a smaller deal just to stick it to Payton.

There are not even close to 32 QBs (at worst he's like QB20) better than Wilson. Especially with him not costing any draft capital, I'd be shocked if he wasn't starting week 1 for someone. I think he's in a very similar boat to Derek Carr a year ago.

I think Russ could take a smaller deal just to stick it to Payton.
I thought the prevailing belief was Russel’s issues year 1 was his arrogance and putting himself on different level from teammates with his executive office and even his own personal staff? I don’t really understand a team leader with that mindset. It would definitely not be ‘brand’ for Russ to give a discount, or consider anything but his own self interest monetizing his career.

Even worse, they gave up the chance to draft Will Levis (or Sam LaPorta) for him. (Actual pick Bryan Bresee)

The Broncos’ dead cap hits for releasing Wilson will vary based on which approach they take with his $22 million 2024 option bonus:
- Route 1: designate him as a post-June 1st cut before March 17th (without exercising his option bonus) which would leave dead cap hits of $53M in 2024 and $32M in 2025
- Route 2: exercise the 2024 option bonus early (can be done any time before it is due on March 17th) and then designate him as a post-June 1st cut before March 17th which would leave dead cap hits of $35.4M in 2024 and $49.6M in 2025
