QB Trey Lance, LAC (3 Viewers)

Stats that Matter from the First 4 Days of Training Camp

Excerpt:

2. Trey Lance has completed 5 of 11 deep passes with 3 drops.

The 49ers will run the ball more than they throw it, but when they throw it they will take shots down the field. And so far in camp, Lance has completed 5 of 11 throws that have traveled at least 20 yards downfield -- 45 percent, which is good. Then factor in the three perfect deep passes he threw that were dropped, and you see that his downfield accuracy has been outstanding so far, even though his accuracy to other parts of the field has been inconsistent.

3. Lance has completed just 4 of 17 passes when targeting Charvarius Ward or Emmanuel Moseley.

Ward has given up 3 catches on 9 targets, and Mosley has given up just 1 catch on 8 targets. They are dominating the 49ers wide receivers. The only one who holds his own against these two is Brandon Aiyuk. We'll see how Deebo Samuel fares against them when he starts practicing.

While Trey Lance was accurate today, don’t forget about his legs.

During a 2-minute drill, Lance had a 30-yard rush, zone-read keeper, 8-yard rush, and a 5-yard rush to start the drive.

Dual-threat quarterback.

Trey Lance finished the day 14/17 passing in my book.

Had a spike that I didn’t count, as well as an incompletion after a sack that I didn’t count.

Great bounce-back after Sunday’s performance.

Context coming at 1:45 on my livestream!

Hes got a better arm than LJ, as far as strength.
Youll hear none of the criticisms that LJ has received, for not being able to work outside the numbers.
He can probably throw it farther than LJ, too.
But LJ has touch with the throws between the numbers, that Lance doesn’t possess, yet.

Based strictly on arm strength and the ability to work the entire field,
Lance has an easy edge on LJ.
But touch and timing will be a thing that Lance will continue to need to improve on.
Not to mention, LJs pocket mechanics/skills/quiet feet give him a consistently better platform
to deliver the ball accurately.
Thats another thing that Lance is behind LJ on. Pocket command/keeping his feet right/platform adjustments.

So yeah, the arm is great on Lance, Not Josh Allen great, but really good.
Id say top 10-15 percentile.
compared to LJ, which I would say is comparable to Watson.

Lance is fun to watch, and we are all excited to see how he develops.
If he can make those 1% incremental improvements,
every game, every year (he’s only 22), given time he can be a top 6 RL
nfl qb.
Hes already a qb1 in fantasy, imo.

I’m a little confused by the conversation here — dynasty, the guy will be huge. But redraft for 2022? I see the 9ers using their RB’s a kajillion times a game without anything resembling consistency from Lance.
Yeah - I've never seen so much hype for a totally unproven player like I'm seeing with Lance. It's been 2 years since he's played consistently and that was against Division II college players.
I have Murray in my dynasty league and I'm hoping to grab him as my 2nd qb. I completely understand your point but I think he's a swing for fence type of pick and as long as he's not your starter why not? Lol

I’m talking for redraft this year - dynasty is obviously a different story.

I've been getting an awful lot of Lance in redraft in case he lights it up but it has been very easy to pair him with a more steady, slightly later QB like Brady, Cousins, Rodgers, Carr. Hasn't been too hard to build those. It is easier to get one of those types and pair with Fields because Lance ADP >>>> Fields but the Lance builds I've done haven't felt like I was reaching much. And I like the results (prior to September).

I was literally explaining to my son the huge risk the 49ers took in trading to draft Lance and how nervous it makes me as a fan....and as I was talking he uncorked the bomb TD and I went into a dopamine euphoria unexperienced for several years.

Spurs fan when they drafted Duncan. Felt the same way back in the day.

But if you take away that one long pass…
I just said above I don’t get the hype for redraft - but maybe I’m starting to get it.
He’s just so explosive. I can’t wait to see him with the starters.
Yep. Going to be a fun season as a 49er fan and a Lance owner in muliple dynasty leagues

Smart young man and takes his film study seriously. Great system to suceed in. Plus, he has soooooooooooooooooo many weapons. Deebo, Aiyuk, Kittle are obvious, but Danny Gray and Ray Ray McCloud give them the true deep speed they haven't had in a while. Really like Gray, the 3rd rounder from SMU. 4.35 speed plus he's not a small guy at 6'2" and 200 pounds. Plus Jennings gives him another big target on 3rd down and green zone.

Still think he's the consummate late-round QB this year. In 12 team leagues that start 1 QB, just wait and take this guy with up the 5 auction dollars...

Clean Pocket, WR had a big separation and is that WR and that DB covering him, are they going to be starting on Sundays?

Let's Curb the Enthusiasm just a smidge here. I'm glad he is showing promise but I don't see a lot on that long TD play, much of it was done by the WR, it wasn't a 50-yd Bomb in the end zone.

Be excited Niners, be ex-cit-ed but don't be offended if a few of us just take it a little slower around the turns in preseason no less.

Cheers!

The fact it was a perfectly thrown bomb with a tight spiral is what was exciting. One of my concerns last year was his deep throws wobbled a bit. Everything about the play was perfectly exectuted, so yeah, it was exciting. I seriously doubt anyone is offended if you're "taking it a little slower"

I think he could wind up not being a great QB, and be a fantasy monster.

Kyle Shanahan, with a kid who can move like this? It's a pretty high ceiling.
I think he will be both. Obviously has the raw talent, but also has the dedication and football IQ. Not saying he will be Mahomes, BUT he just reminds me of Mahomes going into his 2nd year. Plus, the system is a perfect fit for him. Surrounded with talent and an innovative coach.

Not to be argumentative, but he was behind on the throw. WR had to wait for it.

100 percent wrong. Perfect throw. Dropped it right into Gray in stride.

If you nit pick that throw, you can nit pick any throw

Saw someone else say this as well. I don’t really see it. Looks like he looped it perfectly and dropped it right into the receiver to me. 🤷🏽‍♂️

Very rare for a receiver to catch a bomb running at absolute top speed, so this is just nit picking

Some people just have to find fault. Excellent play all around by both Gray and Lance.

A couple legitimate issues with the play: 1) Gray torched his defender but Lance appears to have locked into him at the snap based on the read. That probably won't happen when the games are for real. 2) That pass looks like it came out of Lance's hand as a wobbler 3) Gray absolutely had to slow down, it hit him in stride because the WR made a good adjustment and he had absolutely torched the DB.

Would love to see a wider view of that play.

It's rare that a WR doesn't have to make some kind of adjustment on a deep pass like that, but ideally the pass will lead the WR so he has to speed up to get under it, not slow down and wait for it.

Again, this is really nit picking an excellent play

It was a nice play that I watched a dozen times before posting. The shadows may have made the pass look like a wobbler, but the ball is only on screen for less than a second so I don't think either of us can know for certain. Which is why I said that I would like to see a wider angle of the play.

And Gray did have to slow down.

Definitely the first read, but on shots like that, it's pretty common. Regarding wobbliness, tough to say, but here's the footage

Yeah, that's the same clip. And I agree about the read, it was the right call.

That fact that it didn't wobble was what got me most excited about the play as a 49er fan. He had a simalar play in preseason last year on a bomb to Sherfield, but that was a true wobbler. Even if it wasn't a perfect spiral, it was damn good, which is big improvement.

His motion looks much smoother this year. Looking forward to a fun season.

FTR I am very high on Lance this year and long term.

The pass may not have been a wobbler but each time I watch that video I think it does wobble.

Okay who in here has access to the All-22?

Okay who in here has access to the All-22?

JT O'Sullivan - The QB School. Good content, imo.

Trey Lance Preseason Week 1 - Every Pass Play

TD pass analysis starts at 9:37. Multiple angles.
Thanks for this. Great angles. @efactor that pass looks a whole lot better, IMO, from that end zone angle. It looks like a nice high arcing touch pass. Definitely nitpicking to say it should have lead the WR more, even if there was the opportunity to do so.

got a really big offer I might have to take. it would mean breaking up my Jefferson Cousins stack and swapping Cousins for Lance (and other pieces involved).
