49ers’ DeMeco Ryans on Trey Lance: “He’s putting the ball on the money every time he throws it”

https://www.49erswebzone.com/articles/158661-49ers-demeco-ryans-lance-putting-money-every-throws/

Defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans is the latest member of the San Francisco 49ers to send praise in the direction of quarterback Trey Lance, telling reporters on Wednesday that Lance has been hitting the mark with his accuracy and has consistently improved throughout offseason workouts.

Lance reportedly connected on two deep passes of over 40 yards on Ryans' defense Wednesday, which was the second day of the 49ers' three-day mandatory minicamp. Ryans spoke with reporters after practice, saying Lance has been a handful for his defense in recent practice sessions.

"Defending him has been tough," Ryans said. "He's putting the ball on the money every time he throws it. The accuracy is there. The deep ball is there. To show whatever he wants, he can zip it in there and make a lot of plays. So I'm excited for Trey and what he can do. He's setting himself up to have a really good season for us."

Ryans also said Lance has done an "outstanding job" throughout the offseason and has grown as a result of the Organized Team Activities the 49ers went through during the third phase of their offseason workout program.

"Trey has gotten better and better and better each day," Ryans said. "Again, another guy who's benefited from having these OTA practices. Trey has done an exceptional job and I know we're proud of where he is right now."

I'm not surprised.  In 2019 he threw 28 TDs and ZERO ints.
True, although unfortunately he won’t be playing Southwest Wyoming A&T going forward.

I kid of course, but he still needs to prove it consistently at this level. And I say this as an avid owner of him in my keeper league.

I'm kind of amused at the weak stabs at him this off-season.  Yes, some of greatness is not deserved,  but some of this bull**** isn't either.  I personally think he will be looked at in the same light as Mahomes this time next year.  Go ahead and blast me for that, I don't care.

and then there’s Malik Willis who almost led the NCAA in interceptions at Liberty.

Hope you’re right - and I agree the media seems to be conjuring up a lot of nonsense

Trey Lance in the four practices the media attended this offseason:

50-67 completions (74.6%)
6 TD passes
2 interceptions

Transcripts: What Kyle Shanahan and Trey Lance said as 49ers begin minicamp

Excerpt:

What's important from the quarterback when you're repping red zone and what did you see from QB Trey Lance there today?

"They had a good day today. It's always tough down there, especially when we just did seven-on-seven. When you don't have the threat of a run, it's very tight in that area, so you want very aggressive precision passing without ever turning it over. Because you already got three points and from the whole group, I thought today was our best day offensively down there."

With Trey, I know there's been much made of his motion, but how much work was done on keeping his head stable? Was that a focus for you guys this offseason, just eliminating head movement?

"I guess, I look where their eyes are going, moving coverages. When you're just throwing a football on air, there's lots of things to get out of that, which guys work on. Mainly quarterbacks work on that stuff away from their coach. That's little things, but when they're with us, it's about playing the game. It's about how to get the ball out on time, how to not take a sack, how to move coverages, where to look with your eyes, things like that. But those are things real detailed quarterbacks never stop doing. You watch guys like [Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB] Tom Brady and I feel like he tweaks his throwing motion for the last 20 years every year. And that's why he finds a way to get it stronger at 40 than he had at 30. The good ones are obsessed with that and that's something that really never stops."

With Trey over the last month, just in terms of confidence and command of the huddle, how have you seen him grow and what changes have you seen from him?

"I think just having these OTA practices has been really good, because it's about getting reps and going out there. And I feel like for the first couple days, Trey, along with everybody else, they were just trying to win the day, which to me, doesn't help you that much. You really have to hone in on getting better. The defense you're going against, they know the offense and you can't try to just go for the big plays. You have to play with your fundamentals and prove with every rep you have, because you don't get many reps of play in this game and you get them fully in the preseason and that's about it, before it really counts. And I think Trey's been deliberate in everything he's done. I think especially last week heading into today you can see really see him stacking days and getting better each practice."

The Athletic's Ted Nguyen reports a 49ers coach knocked down talk of Trey Lance struggling with "arm fatigue."

“I’ve never heard anything about that a day in my life," the Niners coach told Nguyen. Sports media personality Colin Cowherd and NFL reporter Mike Silver said during a recent podcast that the 49ers were trying to "rebuild" Lance's throwing motion because of fatigue issues. "He gets arm fatigue. It's not an easy throw. He needs days off, and they're worried about his accuracy," Cowherd said. Silver said there was some concern about Lance's arm health with in the Niners organization. It seems like a non-story, and likely won't be a factor in Kyle Shanahan choosing a starting quarterback for the 2022 season. Lance should be considered the favorite, though Jimmy Garoppolo -- a longtime Shanny favorite -- looms large as training camp approaches.

Imagine being a professional athlete and having arm fatigue after throwing a ball less than one hundred times a day.

Guess once he realized they weren't going to trade Jimmy, Shanny finally confirmed what we all knew.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Jimmy released soon to give him a chance to compete for a starting gig somewhere else while training camps are just getting started.

The right thing to do, and the relationship seems to be solid. Only downside is if they believe that SEA is in play, then they may hold back. Hope not.

Good point about Seattle. I'd like to think they'd take their chances and not screw over Jimmy that way, but often business is business.

It would be foolish to waste a second year of Lance's rookie contract on the bench, even more so since the investment of three number one picks was made.

The only way Lance does not start is if he's significantly behind where he was last year, which is unlikely.

For fantasy purposes, I'm taking him as QB #11 if I'm in a 10 team league, QB #13 if I'm in a 12 team league- and so on.

The ceiling is incredibly high and he's an easy target at the tail end of drafts/auctions.
He’s a top 6 QB for me now, only behind Allen, Herbert, Mahomes, Kyler, and Lamar.

Be bold and take him. He’s a league winner and with the ease which you can invest moderate capital to find a solid insurance policy in most formats makes him an easy choice.

I don't really understand this.  He's your 11th ranked QB or 13th ranked QB depending on how big the league is? 20 team league you have him at QB21?

Prior to being named the starter, I would have taken him as the first backup, depending upon the size of the league. Now that he has the job, that is a moot point.

I have great respect for Shanahan so I’m excited to see what this offense looks like with Lance at the helm.  I really have no clue on the guy other than reports,  but if he’s the real deal…I’ll be tuning into SF games cause they’ll be fun to watch.

I do wonder if Shanahan laments what could have been with RGIII.

His ceiling outcome is a top 3 finish and I expect him, this year, to be QB #6.
Seems incredibly arbitrary to me but all good. I’ll absolutely take a flyer on him, but I have no clue how to properly rank/project him. He can run, and has a strong arm. That’s all we really know.

I don't know about redraft, but I'd seriously love to acquire this dude in dynasty. He's going to be a stud, I think.

QB12 or so feels like a floor for him, if he's a major downgrade as a passer from Jimmy G. If he can be on that level or better, top-6 is certainly doable.

Every season since 2017 a 2nd year QB has broken out for a top-5 season, and he's easily this season's best candidate.

I’m quite happy to pair him with Tom12 in SF. (Now if Watson, tannehill or mills do anything I’ll be alright.)

I guess I get that logic, but in that range I’d just be sure to get Lance for upside and then pair him with one of about 8 veterans in the 13-20 range. Ideally Carr. (But he might also have risen lately)

This is the way.

This is the way.
Agree completely.

my point is I’m willing to take him above ADP and pair him with a veteran later on.

The discount is still available but will evaporate within the next few weeks.

He’s my QB 6 overall and am willing to go over market to land him. He has legitimate top 3 upside.

I did baseline projections for him, which are inherently somewhat arbitrary.

He’s an all world athlete with the best play caller in the league, a strong supporting cast, and cheat code level running skills. If he hits a ceiling outcome, he’s a league winner. Think Lamar two years ago- he’s that caliber of talent.

If he busts, a decent backup can be obtained for a low cost.

There is literally zero risk. If he busts, a replacement is easy to find and the draft capital to draft Trey is not significant.

I’m a little confused by the conversation here — dynasty, the guy will be huge. But redraft for 2022? I see the 9ers using their RB’s a kajillion times a game without anything resembling consistency  from Lance.

Yeah - I've never seen so much hype for a totally unproven player like I'm seeing with Lance. It's been 2 years since he's played consistently and that was against Division II college players.

I have him in dynasty, and I’m very excited about it. I will likely not be drafting him in re-draft this year except as a second quarterback.

That said, there is a little bit of reason for excitement in redraft in that he should be Konami-code rushing quarterback… Plus, his receivers are all YAC monsters.

I love his upside as a value play/late draft pick. He could well sneak into the top 15, and you can probably get him as the 24th -> QB off the board.

But yes - cautious optimism for Dynasty & redraft alike. He’s far from proven.
