QB Trey Lance, LAC (1 Viewer)

My point is Lance might not be able to play dead. Without Jimmy G, their playoff hopes would be up in smoke.

If Lance sucks, they're going to have to find someone else. At the very least, Jimmy could be a bridge. He's a FA after this season so maybe they can sign him to a more team-friendly deal.

It's too early for the 9ers to cut bait on Garoppolo, IMO.
You said there wasn't a reason to clear money off the books right now.  There are a couple of compelling reasons.

There’s not a good enough reason, period, but I said they should be in no hurry to clear their books right now.

Their QB play is a huge factor for them & Lance is a guy who could blow up their season (in a bad way).

Kittle on the fence between Lance and Jimmy G which isn't great because JG just isn't that good
Come on dude, you sound like some of these “beat reporters” drawing imaginary lines in these stories to disparage Trey for clicks. No offense, but there’s already enough of that happening.

It’s well-documented that Kittle and Jimmy are good friends, and that Jimmy is a pretty good dude and teammate. What do you expect Kittle to say there? “Well, I like Jimmy and all and he’s my buddy, but he stinks at football. We gotta get Trey in here ASAP.”

I don't know why your back is up about this but the easy answer is 'Trey is ready, can hardly wait to get out there with him and get to the superbowl."  You know, tow the company line.  It's not going to help Lance if he gets out there and stinks and has JG breathing down his neck...especially with comments that say they may be better with JG.

Who has said this aside from beat reporters on the other side of the country with “sources”? Because that’s not what Kittle said in that article.

He said "I don't know" who he would rather have and they both have strengths...did you not read it?  Lance is the starter - as I said earlier having an "i don't know" from a key player when Lance plays poorly and everyone starts calling for JG isn't setting the kid up for success.  You have to go all in on a guy like this. Watching his back every time he makes a mistake is going to be killer for him.

If the 49ers haven't fully decided on Lance yet, why should Kittle? He's just being politically correct in supporting his old buddy while still saying Lance has immense upside if they give the kid the keys this year.

I think you are looking at this wrong. If it’s even a toss up between the guy who has thrown less than 400 passes since high school, and the 30 year old who has been to the super bowl and who is best buddies with the interviewee, that’s a pretty good sign for the Niners.

I dont think he's on the fence, I think he's just saying what he thinks, based on the fact that that the 49ers haven't actually named Trey the starter yet. Until they name a starter, Kittle is saying he's good with whoever the QB is, which is exactly what he should say.

Kittle:

"I’m glad I’m not the head coach of the 49ers. That’s all on Coach Shanahan."

"Football is a competitive sport. If there’s not competition, if you’re not fighting for your starting job every single day, then you’re not going to get any better. It was nice to see those two push each other all year. I think Trey learned a lot from Jimmy. If Trey is the starter and if there’s growing pains, hey, so be it. I think we have good enough players around him to help him succeed."

"We’re all here just trying to get better and whether that’s Jimmy G, whether it’s Trey Lance, whether it’s Nate Sudfeld, or our Mr. Irrelevant, Brock Purdy. Whoever is slinging that rock hopefully will just throw it to me more than anybody else.”

As a Raiders fan in 9ers land, it’s fun to hear this topic go back and forth every single day on sports radio.

No need, I'm not caught up in the offseason business were SF wants to get something for Jimmy G before they part with him.
I do think they’ll start the season with Lance, but the leash may not be long if Jimmy is kept around and the team struggles out of the gate.

Jimmy will be gone soon.  Traded or cut. It's Lance's team for better or worse.

Of the opinion he will do at least as well as Jimmy did and probably better.  Defenses didn't have to guard the sidelines or deep middle.  Now they do.  Will be fun to see them use the whole field.

My guess/opinion is the 49ers don't want to signal they're starting Lance and lose Jimmy G trade leverage. He'd be worth less if teams know he isn't their 2022 starter.

Bing. O. Even though most sound-minded people already know who’s going to be out there Week 1. I guess they don’t want to fully tip their hand just yet.

I think this is exactly what I'm getting at.  You can't have the stars say they don't know who is better with a kid that's barely played any football.  If JG is on the team this year and  Lance starts - let's face it the kid will have some tremendous stinkers this year no matter where his career goes - he can't have JG breathing down his neck. That's going to kill his confidence to have everyone calling for JG

If they’re willing to trade him, the other team already knows he’s not the 2022 starter.

I think everyone knows that Lance is going to start. You don't trade that much of a haul in top picks and have a guy sit two years into a 4-year (5 if extended) rookie contract. Plus, Jimmy won't even be able to throw until August.

The key is how much leash they're going to give Lance if he struggles out of the gate, given that it is a team with genuine Super Bowl aspirations.

Yep.  At this point, 49ers know a 3rd or 4th rounder is the absolute most they may get.  The "2 2nds" that was their reported asking price was a pipe dream.  Don't blame Lynch for starting out high, but hope he didn't actually turn down an offer of a 2nd for him.

Agreed - I could see a 3rd or 4th for him, although they're also probably going to have to eat some of Jimmy's contract to make it work.

As a fan, I'm looking forward to watching Lance.  Love Jimmy and all, but not exactly the most exciting guy to watch, unless you are a masochist, waiting for the pick that turns the game in the wrong direction.  Because it will come.

The fact that they made a super bowl and an NFC championship game with Jimmy in the past 3 years is testament to how good the roster is top to bottom.  I know a lot of fans think they should have an all-pro at every position, but they are strong across the board.  If Lance hits, look out....................

I wish writers would stop with this fake narrative, let's just see what happens.

Arguing that he is or isn't ready is all speculation and a waste of time IMO.

Bettors seem to believe in Trey Lance

https://www.49erswebzone.com/articles/158335-bettors-seem-believe-trey-lance/

The narrative surrounding Trey Lance and his readiness to take over as the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers has been primarily negative thus far in the offseason, especially from the national media. Doubts abound about the second-year quarterback, but that hasn't seemed to deter bettors at Caesar's Sportsbook in Las Vegas.

According to Max Meyer, an editorial content writer for Caesar's Sportsbook, more money has come in on Trey Lance to win NFL MVP than Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes combined.

All of this money has driven his odds from +20000 (200 to 1) all the way down to +6000 (60 to 1).

According to DraftKings Sportsbook, as of May 11, Lance actually had the 19th best odds to win the award, tied with teammate Deebo Samuel at +5000.

While the national media may not be very high on Lance and his prospects as the starting quarterback for the 2022 49ers, the betting public seems to have quite a bit of faith in Lance and what he will be able to produce and accomplish in Kyle Shanahan's offense.

It will be very interesting to monitor not only the narrative surrounding Trey Lance as OTAs, mandatory minicamp, and training camp play out over the summer, but what the betting markets look like as well.

Most teams are willing to trade anyone if the price is right or they can upgrade the position at a value they like. Jimmy G's trade value takes another hit the moment the 49ers announce Lance as their '22 starter hence all the smoke and mirror headlines.

Everyone in here knows that the ‘Niners are staring Trey Lance but the rest of the NFL GMs will be fooled into believing that Jimmy G is the starter? ok - we’ll agree to disagree on that.

It would be foolish to waste a second year of Lance's rookie contract on the bench, even more so since the investment of three number one picks was made.

The only way Lance does not start is if he's significantly behind where he was last year, which is unlikely.

For fantasy purposes, I'm taking him as QB #11 if I'm in a 10 team league, QB #13 if I'm in a 12 team league- and so on.

The ceiling is incredibly high and he's an easy target at the tail end of drafts/auctions.

This kid gets it. Seems to have a good head on his shoulders,  and he's already more personable than Jimmy, who always seemed kinda...I don't know, not real comfortable at the podium talking to the media. It seems like it comes natural to Trey.

I can't wait for the season to start.
That was a good interview. Looks poised up there.

Trey Lance told reporters that he dealt with a right index finger injury throughout the 2021 season.

Lance suffered the injury during the preseason, and it affected his ability to throw the ball. After taking a few weeks off from throwing after the season, Lance said his finger is healthy again, "I’m in a great spot, health-wise, and throwing the ball well, and feeling really good." Despite still having Jimmy Garoppolo on the roster, the 49ers are expected to move forward with Lance as their 2022 starter. Lance flashed borderline elite rushing ability at the position; if he can improve as a passer he could have a very productive fantasy season.

Same thing the Eagles went through last year, and then the anti Hurts guys really got some ammo when we signed Minshew. Same sentiment too. "Who cares, we know he is going to be the starter" just media fodder really.

Expecting big things from Lance this year, with that said.
