QB Trey Lance, LAC (2 Viewers)

Just to name a few:

Steve McNair - Alcorn St.

Kurt Warner - Northern Iowa

Ben Roethlisberger - Miami of Ohio

Rich Gannon - Delaware

Ken O'Brien - UC Davis

Phil Simms - Morehead St.

Doug Williams Grambling

Terry Bradshaw - Louisiana Tech

Johnny Unitas - Louisville (nobody then)

Tony Romo - Eastern Illinois

Daunte Culpepper - UCF

Chad Pennington - Marshall

Ryan Fitzpatrick - Harvard
Don't forget David Kreig from the powerhouse Milton College.

Yeah, a lot of former NFL QBs could be on this list.  I tried to name some decent ones.
I hope you are not making light of Kreig. He played for 18 years, 13 years as a starter, threw for a high of 32 TDs in a season, played in 3 pro bowls, had six 3000 yard seasons topping out at 3671 yards. His career spanned from 1981 to 1998, a time when 3,000 yard seasons were more the exception than the rule. David Kreig is the NFL's most unheralded "decent QB" of all time.

199 ints .....meh....I thought Jim Zorn was more fun to watch as far as Seahawk QBs.  I'll give Krieg credit for longevity.

This part is rather dumb:

San Francisco knows today — they know right now — if Trey Lance is gonna be great. Physically, emotionally, intellectually, can he handle it? They know it right now. … Folks, he's been there for 150-plus practices, played in six games, two starts, been in the film room now for a year."

We don’t know if Trevor Lawrence is going to be great, if Justin fields is going to be great, etc.

Oh, it’s from Cowherd?

not even worth me clicking the link, then.

btw, @Faust appreciate all you do my man.
Oh yeah, this was by no means aimed at @Faust, who I never assume endorses the content posted. I try not to shoot the messenger. :)

and yeah - Cowherd is regurgitating the Montana comments from…was it 3 months ago? At least 2. Anyway, yeah - Cowherd.

Trey Lance is going to be a fantasy stud from jump. He's got a ways to go as a pure thrower but as JohnnyU pointed out and I'd agree he's a better passer then Lamar, a massive threat as a runner and he's got what I believe to be a coach who will know how to use him.

He’s definitely in the right place to succeed. Which is probably the most important thing for the vast majority of players.

I’m with you. Not to mention, look at the offense he’s going to be at the helm of. Great offensive line, solid run game, and a trio of talented pass catchers.

He doesn’t even have to be extraordinary to be a Top 5 QB in this offense, just good.

Looking at the 12 rushes per game Shanny gave him should pique curiosity in any FF owner. I’m tempted to offer up some picks for him while there’s still some ambiguity.

Sounds like the 49ers arent happy with the offers so far so trying some PR to raise the stakes.  Very low chance of Jimmy staying IMO.

ESPN's Adam Schefter suggested the 49ers might keep Jimmy Garoppolo this offseason.

Schefter said Kyle Shanahan and the Niners could stick with Garoppolo in 2022 in large part because the QB is popular with teammates and Trey Lance still has a ways to go in his development as an NFL passer. Lance, Schefter said, "was probably further behind than people realized, Trey Lance is greener than people realize, Trey Lance is going to need more work than people realize, and they have a roster that can win now." Schefter added the team is "happy" with Lance's development. Garoppolo, a $26.9 million cap hit in 2022, is signed for one more year with San Francisco. Shanahan's unwavering commitment to Garoppolo in the team's 2021 postseason run suggests he could be amenable to letting Lance, 21, sit for another season before taking over the offense. The Niners' minds could change quickly, however, if a team offers major draft capital in exchange for Jimmy G.

-Is that how you read the tea leaves? I see it more as an indictment that Lance is not going to be ready.

-Steve McNair largely rode the bench for 2 seasons while Chris Chandler or Chandelier depending on how you recall that guy but McNair sat and it served him well. I know Jimmy G costs a lot of $$$ for the Niners if they kept in '22 but if they want to return and make a deep run, they might need both QBs.

-McNair started 2 games as a rookie and 4 more his 2nd season behind Chandler.

I like the idea you have of creating a bigger market, what do you think Jimmy G is worth in a trade? Do you think the Phins would bring him in to help Tua learn a little more and make Tua earn his starting spot? I feel like there are minimal 4-5 teams that would be happy to work a trade as long as it isn't multiple 1st round picks which would be hard to imagine but the Niners might have a high asking price until they get closer to the Draft.

Whatever the Niners think they need to make Lance work in '22, whatever that is, impact defensive players to set up the offense and bail them out or better weapons, OL is pretty good but maybe they could add a sweet piece to the line and improve that running game even further.  But something could happen on Draft Day and they can use Jimmy G to leverage whatever final pieces they feel they need for '22.

Cheers Bobby 😉

Not that you asked me but that's how I see it.

A few reasons but biggest one is Jimmy's exit interview with media after the season.  He said nothing about like "hope I can come back" but instead just  matter of fact was saying he hoped to get traded to a good team. He also during that interview  he just spoke with Lynch a few days about finding the right destination.  I was actually a little surprised at the time the was that open and felt it did take a little leverage away from SF.

So that's the main reason but some other small reasons that add up but this is biggest reason I think this is posturing other then what Jimmy basically confirmed and that would be how would sitting out another year for Lance when he's barely played the last two years really help him develop? This is a guy who has attempted  only 101 passes since 2019, 502 passes TOTAL during his entire High School, college and pro career. Think about that, 16 QB's in the NFL attempted more passes just last season then Lance has attempted since he was in junior high.  Which should be of course set an expectation that he'd be raw at this time but how does sitting for chunk of another season help that? I just don't think practice reps are going to take away he'll be raw whenever his time is up so no sense in putting off the inevitable.

Just my opinion - Agree with Menobrown

The days of developing a QB for more than 1 yr like McNair, Pennington and Rodgers are over.  The low rookie contract gives a team a certain window to win while not paying so much for a QB.  Jimmy G's cap hit is $25M+ - so not only do we have a rookie QB who a team traded multiple 1st rd picks but a chance to open cap space and sign much of their core that are up for new deals.

Based on his history and performance I personally think Jimmy G should command a Wentz like deal - but Wentz failing and his injury history/product of system concern probably have the offers coming in much lower - probably mid round pick.  As we get closer to the draft teams will have to decide what to do with a weaker than usual QB class.  SF releasing PR on how they love Jimmy G/concerns abput Lance strengthens their position.  Im sure they already had a chat with Lance saying not to read any of the offseason fodder....and Jimmy G is already made it clear he's going.  So I read this as posturing.

Could he come back - possible - but only if they cant get at least something decent for him - as it gets closer to the draft I think they'll get a package they like and make the move - they are not only desperate for cap space but picks as well.  Makes too much sense to deal him and I view this as smoke to try to leverage better offers.

Speaking Wednesday on Good Morning Football, John Lynch said Trey Lance is "everything we thought he was when we traded a lot to go get him, and more,"

Apparently, the 49ers thought Lance was a backup quarterback when they spent three first-round picks on him in the 2021 draft, with the team showing zero interest in starting him as a rookie. Lynch described Lance's development as "tremendous" and said the quarterback "would get his chance." With Jimmy Garoppolo having recently undergone shoulder surgery, his trade value is somewhat up in the air. Lynch described Garoppolo's situation as "active" and "fluid" with a lot of teams having interest. The 49ers appeared to be flirting with non-Lance options at quarterback in 2022, but wasting two seasons of Lance's rookie deal would be a fireable offense, given the draft capital spent to acquire him. For better or worse, the 49ers appear to be moving towards handing the reigns to Trey Lance in his second season.

NBC Sports' Matt Maiocco said he's not sure "anybody knows" if Trey Lance is ready to start for the 49ers in 2022.

Maiocco said the team believes Lance will be ready when he's called on as the starter, whether that's this year or next year. 49ers general manager John Lynch said this month that Lance is "everything we thought he was when we traded a lot to go get him, and more," countering reports that Kyle Shanahan remains wary of trading Jimmy Garoppolo and rolling with Lance as the Niners' starter in 2022. The quarterback market has narrowed considerably over the past week, leaving the 49ers without many trading partners for Garoppolo. "A lot has changed" since the start of the NFL new year, Maiocco said, including Jimmy G undergoing shoulder surgery. In February, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Lance "was probably further behind than people realized, Trey Lance is greener than people realize, Trey Lance is going to need more work than people realize, and they have a roster that can win now." There's been no indication the 49ers are ready to commit to Lance.
