QB Tua Tagovailoa, MIA (1 Viewer)

I want to see more of Tua. 4 of his top 5 WRs are out, so it's Waddle and a bunch of guys who might not make the team. But the TEs, Gesicki & Company will play, as will the oline starters. The RB situation will be clarified, or not. Can Ahmed be 1b, or just a change of pace guy?  I expect to see some of Pitts in this game, versus a lot of starters on Miami's defense, including Howard who play a few series.

Tua Tagovailoa completed 16-of-27 passes for 202 yards, one touchdown and an interception in the Dolphins' 17-16, Week 1 win over the Patriots.

It was not an overly impressive day from the hyped second-year starter, but that was the expectation going in against an elite defense without Will Fuller. Tagovailoa's interception was the kind of decision he simply can't be making as a sophomore, however, as he was getting pounded for a sack and blindly heaved the ball near the sideline. It resulted in a critical fourth quarter turnover. Thankfully for Tagovailoa, the Patriots responded with an even-costlier giveaway. Tagovailoa took only two sacks, but he was running for his life behind the Dolphins' makeshift offensive line. That is certainly going to remain a concern going forward. With Fuller returning, Tagovailoa has another tough Week 2 test in the Bills before things soften up with the Raiders.

Tua Tagovailoa was carted from Week 2 against Buffalo with a rib injury and is questionable to return.

Tua had to be helped off the field after taking a fourth-down sack. The Dolphins brought the cart out for Tua, who was in clear discomfort and looked to be favoring his left/sidethrowing shoulder . Tua was under heavy pressures to open the game, with Buffalo getting four QB hits on in the first quarter. Jacoby Brissett replaced Tua and will likely finish the game at quarterback for the Dolphins.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa suffered bruised ribs in Sunday's game against Buffalo.

It's good news after Tua needed to be carted off following a first quarter sack. Tua will undergo an MRI on Monday to determine the severity. The Dolphins may have avoided a more serious injury, but this is still something that could cost Tua some time. Jacoby Brissett replaced Tua and would be in line to start Week 3 if Tua is sidelined.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports testing on Tua Tagovailoa's rib injury didn't reveal any "major issues."

Tagovailoa required a cart after suffering a painful rib injury early in Miami's Week 2 decimation at the hands of the Bills. Though it appears he avoided a long-term injury, he'll likely miss considerable practice time this week ahead of the Dolphins' Week 3 matchup against Vegas. Jacoby Brissett -- disastrous Sunday in Tua's place -- would get the nod against the Raiders if Tagovailoa is sidelined. Every fantasy relevant Miami player would be downgraded and the Raiders surprisingly good defense would become a must-start option in Week 3. Even if Tua starts, the Vegas defense is a solid play.

Tua's Offensive Line rankings on another site...

Michael Dieter ranks 23rd out of starting Centers.

Bog RG and LG rank in the bottom 1/3 or worse

LT Eichenberg ranks 48 out of 72 starting Tackles.

Jesse Davis is about 54th right now.

Slow n steady RB that really cannot excelerate through the hole and burst into the 2nd level when there are decent run blocks in front of him.

Rookie WR, starter that isn't starting in Will Fuller. There's a lot in this soup but Tua is not good enough to overcome all these things. At Alabama he played with real NFL talent all around him. Right now he has an average at best supporting cast on offense and it simply isn't enough.

At one point, I advocated for Miami to select Fields with 1.06.  To have 2 QBs on rookie contracts. He's non perfect, but he's making many good plays each game I've seen.

Dolphins coach Brian Flores called Tua Tagovailoa (bruised ribs) day-to-day ahead of the team's Week 3 game against the Raiders.

Tagoaviloa will have a shot at suiting up in Week 3 after testing revealed no major issues earlier today. He will likely sit out most of the Dolphins' practices this week which isn't great for a quarterback who has little experience throwing to his current crop of starting receivers. Still, a banged-up Tua would be a better option than Jacoby Brissett, who turned 40 passes into 169 yards and an interception in relief of Tagovailoa last week. Dolphins fantasy options would get buried in the rankings if Tua's injury keeps him out of their Week 3 matchup with Vegas.

Watson to Miami is in the future.
Just wish I knew how he was going to come out of all this. If he just gets a couple game slap on the wrist I'd give 3 first for him.  Known commodity. I think in the end Lawrence is going to be the only star out of this last draft.

@Faust, some in Miami think Brissett is a better option than Tua. Parker dropped a long pass in the endzone, Grant fumbled at the 5, and there were other costly drops. They failed on 3 4th down plays and passed up 2 FG attempts. He's also a more effective runner than Tua. A few fans even wanna see 3rd stringer Reid Sinnett, who had a strong pre-season. They're pouring it on in Miami.

But top of the list is to bench LT Jackson.

Penei Sewell currently ranks 9th in the NFL out of 72 starting Tackles, just 2 weeks but he has risen to the top pretty fast.

Feels like since Austin Jackson has gotten here and even right before his draft selection, it's been a never ending list of excuses and people trying to defend him.

Something I suspected, and now several on the Herald web-site and social media are saying: Tua gets some blame on the sacks for not adjusting the protection or play when Buffalo showed blitz. Tua is being thrown under the bus, perhaps rightly so. Grier too.

I remember when men used to put on a flak jacket and take some Oxy. Real lack of standards, your generation.
Not that there were any signs in college that he might be injury-prone. Anyway, it looks like NFL Network might've gotten it wrong, while many Dolphans think it's a ruse to protect Tua. Could've had Herbert. Could've had Fields.

>>Chao said Tagovailoa would be at risk of a punctured lung if he returns too soon from the injury.

NFL Network had consistently and incorrectly reported all week that Tagovailoa had only bruised ribs, not fractured ribs.<<

the window is not that long. call Caserio and give him every pick he wants.

this team could take a big jump with the right QB running the offense.

Dolphin Digest writer throwing Tua under the bus. His verdict on Tua in the NFL is based on him being injury prone, but I think it's also lack of ability to evade pressure and put fear in defenses with deep passes on those blitzes. The bad oline and ocoordinators aren't doing him any favors. Unless you're an elite runner, size matters. Drew Brees was the exception.

It’s time to ask: Is Tua Tagovailoa really the future of the Miami Dolphins
Look, I’m as big a tua backer as you will find around here, but when looking at other qbs drafted around him now (2 years running ) tua is missing something.  You can call it the oline, but if kyler was back there would we think that? Watson? Fields? Mac Jones even?
Tua has all the accuracy in the world but he seems slow in his reads and doesn’t really try and escape the pocket when running lanes open up. Dolphin fans are used to gunslingers. That’s the bar we set. I think we are going qb shopping this off-season if not sooner. (Now, let’s be honest, if Rodgers even sniffs wanting to come down here id go for him over Watson and the picks it would take to get him. Hell, id send pat Riley to go close the deal rather than Grier)

thought the narrative this year was “we surrounded you with weapons, so no more excuses”

bums me out - really thought he was ready to take a leap and the game would slow down fie him.

The comparison to Brees may be more apt than most people think.  Brees had pocket issues when he first started in the NFL (I think I remember Jason taylor saying "You always know where he is in the pocket, 7 steps back then 2 up" when they played early in his career) and I think Tua is still adjusting.  However, much like another of Brees' contemporaries (Jay Fiedler) I believe competition at all positions is a good thing.  I wanted the Phins to draft Tua and Hurts last year and see what happens.  I actually believe you should keep drafting a position until you find the right player and two in the same draft isn't a sin anymore (look at Cousins for instance).

At this point, you see what Brisett does, how tua responds when he comes back, and then also kick the tires on all the QBs who are out there in 2022.

The bar was set in the early 80's and the fans down there just want the next Marino. Sometimes a team has to cultivate what they have. The Dolphins have proven the last 20+ years of not being able to do that.

It is clear that the Dolphins just aren't a good franchise for him like Jets/Darnold and maybe even Bears/Trubisky. I think Tua can do a Tannehill at some point but needs to get out of MIA.

Imagine if BUF kicked Allen out of town after 20 mediocre to bad games? Sometimes things take some time to click and a franchise can't panic like the fins always seem to do. Being hurt doesn't help, but I don't know how he can be labeled injury prone when he gets driven into the ground and breaks some ribs, unlucky, sure.

I’m with you there, but I think Allen and Herbert are part of the issue here as well. Maybe especially Herbert. Now, who is to say that had the phins taken Herbert over tua that this regime may not have been able to screw Herbert up too, but dolphin fans will take a 40-38 loss over a 17-16 win.

So true. There is a weird fan fascination about the mythical "franchise QB" that really doesn't make a lot of sense. Herbert is considered a franchise QB after 1 year. Will the Chargers ever win a Super Bowl with him? Who knows. The Dolphins never won a Super Bowl with Marino, but he was really fun to watch play. Jim Kelly never won a Super Bowl but put up tons of points. At least both of those guys got their teams to Super Bowls I suppose.

On the other hand, the Bears last won a Super Bowl with Jim McMahon, who objectively was a very average QB. Yet Bears fans around here (I'm from Chicago) obsess over finding a franchise QB as being the elusive missing piece to return them to glory. In 2007, when the Bears last went to the Super Bowl with Rex Grossman, that had to have been the most joyless march to a Super Bowl here in Chicago in the history of the NFL. Everyone hated Rex and this dude took them to the Super Bowl. So weird.

Eagles win it in 2018 with Foles and get rid of him in 2019 and continue their search for their franchise QB. It has to be about the fans wanting style points at the position, which I kind of get, because it clearly isn't about winning a Super Bowl, which can be done, and has been done with average QBs on really good teams. The success of Tom Brady just makes the myth of needing a franchise QB worse I suppose. Some Bears fans on sports radio last year were believing that if the Bears signed Brady they would of won it all. LOL. Kind of like there was a chance to win it here with Super Bowl MVP Foles. Maybe bad teams are just bad teams.

You can call it the oline,
I have purposely not called you on being the big Tua backer and here's why, you know why he sucks mostly and yeah other QBs could look a little better but until Miami builds a protective fortress, most of these QBs coming in are going to stink. It's just with Tua, he's undersized, has a noodle for an arm, doesn't really make a lot of plays with his feet probably due to the entire broken hip socket he suffered in college and we can go on and on and on with all kinds of reasons or we can move on.

But we can't until we figure out the OLine, most guys will stink in Miami as their currently assembled.

Fractured Ribs IR
8 football injuries since 2018. He might develop further, but first he needs to stay healthy, which isn't easy given the oline and play calls.

>>Those are: broken index finger; knee sprain; quadriceps bruise (missed part of game), ankle issue (missed part game), high ankle sprain (missed a game), serious hip injury; jammed thumb missed one game) and fractured ribs (out min. 3 games at least). Bad luck for nice young man.<<

The good news is none of them are related.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Tua Tagovailoa (broken ribs) is expected to return from injured reserve in Week 6.

Week 6 is the first time Tagovailoa will be eligible to come off injured reserve so all signs point to the second-year passer progressing quickly from his rib injury. Jacoby Brissett averaged just 4.4 yards per attempt against the Raiders in Week 3, choosing to check down to Mike Gesicki or Jaylen Waddle on the bulk of his dropbacks. Tua wasn't setting the league ablaze to start the year but the Miami offense is undoubtedly better off with him in the lineup. All Dolphins pass-catchers should remain downgraded until Tagovailoa returns.
