QB Tua Tagovailoa, MIA (2 Viewers)

Tua Tagovailoa expects more down-field passing opportunities this season.

“I wasn’t really able to push the ball down the field last year because we didn’t have plays specifically to push the ball down the field,” Tagovailoa claimed in an interview with Muscle & Fitness magazine. “A lot of plays that were called last year were meant for one person. Either this person is open, or the play might be dead.” Everyone, including Tua, seems to be protesting too much as to his 2022 down-field ability, but we have zero doubt Kyle Shanahan disciple Mike McDaniel is going to scheme a better deep game this season. Tagovailoa also had the arm strength to at least hit open, streaking down-field receivers at Alabama. That is going to be a major 2022 possibility with Tyreek Hill joining Jaylen Waddle. This is not all smoke.

Why does almost everyone adds an "n' to this guys last name when they say it?

Every time I hear someone say his name, its like "TuNga-viola" and it drives me nuts.

TUA TAGOVAILOA QB, MIAMI DOLPHINS

When comparing quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes and Tua Tagovailoa, Tyreek Hill said "accuracy-wise, I'm going with Tua all day."

Tagovailoa's arm strength has drawn criticism over the years, but Hill believes Tagovailoa is "that dude" when it comes to accuracy. Hill said of his new quarterback, "He's accurate. He can throw the deep ball, and he actually goes through his reads." Tagovailoa's accuracy on deep balls has been one of his stronger traits early in his career. Per PFF, he ranked second in deep ball completion percentage last season (48.3%), but only attempted 29 deep passes on the year. That should change in 2022, with the acquisition of Hill -- one of the premier deep threats in the league. Last season he caught 11-of-28 deep balls for 398 yards and three scores, ranking sixth in the league with a deep ball ADOT of 34.7. In PFF's adjusted completion percentage it was Mahomes (78.3%) who ranked second in the league in 2021. Tagovailoa's adjusted completion percentage of 75.3% ranked 18th. We'll see how Tagovailoa and Hill gel in 2022, but this take is one that may already be locked and loaded in the Old Takes Exposed chamber.

Could you say that the lack of pass catching talent has held Tua back?  Maybe.
Could you say that having Chan Gailey and a George Godsey/Eric Studesville OC combo has held him back?  Maybe.
Could you say the Watson trade rumors hovering about him all last season held him back?  Maybe.
Could you say having a really rough OL has held him back? Maybe.
Could you say that having Myles Gaskin being the best RB he's played with held him back?  Maybe.

But he's just been so nondescript.  And sometimes the situation overwhelms the potential.  Tyreek is right.  This time 6 months from now, we'll know one way or the other.

Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel praised Tua Tagovailoa's summer following Saturday's preseason game.

Tua went 6-of-8 for 73 yards across two drives vs. the Raiders. “I was really happy with Tua because he has been having such a good camp, just in his development and ownership of the offense,” McDaniel said. “I was very hopeful that he would be the same guy on game day. It was my first opportunity with him, and he executed really everything that we asked him to do. His ownership of the offense, his command of the players was real good. He distributed the ball well. There were a couple of times that he got to three in his progression, and he adjusted with the defense. ... So I was happy with his performance, and it was something to build upon moving forward that the team really was pumped to see.” There is nothing revelatory in there, but it is clear McDaniel is not having to fake his quarterback praise. Piloting an offense loaded with skill corps weaponry, Tagovailoa has plenty of QB2 upside.

Tua to Tyreek 51 yard bomb on first play beating the CB and safety. Next play, 11 yard pass to Tua. Drive ends with an 8 yard TD to Cracraft. Mostly 2nd stringers on PHI D, but could this be a sign of things to come?

I think Tyreek might be a bit more boom/bust than he typically is..... as I don't think Tua is the QB Mahomes is. (shocker, right?) LOL. :excited:

I really don't like it honestly, because I was so high on Waddle before Hill was signed. It sapped some of the value we might could have gotten in Waddle. I'd be stoked to get Hill as my WR3 (I play in start 3WR leagues), but he's going much higher than that.
Unless something crazy happens in my drafts, I doubt I'll be touching anything Miami has to offer this season, though I don't necessarily fault anyone for believing in Hill's talent.

Tyreek was very boom & bust in 2021. Something like 6 weeks of top 10 WR, and many that were not even top 30. Miami will be running lots of pre-snap motion, it may be better for Hill. SF was #1 in pre-snap motion in 2021. Tua won't scramble and launch it to Hill 60 yards downfield while under pressure, but in passes that traveled over 20 yards, Tua has been near top in accuracy. His problem has been performance when the pocket breaks down.

Also, Miami has Waddle, Wilson, better 2 & 3 WRs than Hill had in KC. And while Waddle was banged up, Tua threw many accurate crossing routes and long passes to Hill in scrimmages.

I think Tyreek will actually be less boom & bust than he was in 2021.

Tua Tagovailoa completed 23-of-33 passes for 270 yards and one touchdown in the Dolphins' 20-7, Week 1 win over the Patriots.

Tua's lone touchdown was a 42-yard hookup to Jaylen Waddle where Waddle split the defense up the middle at the end of the first half. Miami never really ever came close to scoring again on offense in this one. Tua did complete over 69% of his passes at 8.2 YPA, but it's hard to love him in fantasy in a run-based, get-it-out-quick passing offense. Tagovailoa will be a QB2/3 next week on the road against the Ravens.

Anyone see upside here to break out this year or is Tua as boring as his thread?

Does he ever run or strictly pocket?
He likes to get rid of the ball quickly to first or second read. He had one the fastest releases ever from college analytics of his Alabama days. His clean pocket numbers are good. When the pocket breaks down he scrambles, looking primarily to throw the ball. That's when his passing numbers have been bad, when he can't set his feet and follow-through. He averages about 10 yards running per game, and surprisingly has 3 running TDs in both 2020 and 2021. I expect a slight improvement from 2021, due to better WRs. On that 4th down gamble by McDaniel, Tua hit Waddle in stride about 15 yards downfield splitting 3 defenders and Waddle did the rest. That's the Tua upside, along with potentially an occassional long pass. In practices and scrimmages Tua had many long completions of 40-50 yards to Hill, of course without Judon chasing him.

Potentially, the oline has improved, but last week vs NE Tua was under alot of pressure.

Tua was 28th out of 32 starting QBs this past week according to Pro Football Focus
Tua was 5th out of 32 on ESPN in their QBR rating system.

I feel that strongly captures the Tu'Anon experience, you never know what you have...but you kind of do and that's why it keeps coming out this way.
It's in the eye of the beholder whether he's great or subpar.
many of us feel he has major limits and I have been vocal he was allowed to play too early and also was injured or not 100% when they started him. Last year he got busted up in Week 3 and was never quite the same most of the year. I'm expecting Teddy to make an appearance or two this year, when that happens and why is anyone's guess but I don't see Tua lasting 17 weeks.

They try to keep Tua in the pocket and he flutters balls that are thrown outside the numbers, most of his passes that are successful are thrown straight ahead ala Waddle who makes 3 Patriots miss with 2 of them tackling each other.

-How much of this Waddle TD do you attribute to Tua?

So from these responses for fantasy purposes not much to see here I take it?

It was 3-0 because Howard and Holland mugged and robbed from Parker and Jones, NTTAWWT!
It was getting boring when Pats are pinned in their territory and we get a strip sack and TD from Ingram, now it's 10-0 and Tua has done largely nothing.
It was 10-0 late in the 1st Half, 4th and 7, Waddle makes a tremendous play and Miami is cruising 17-0, 2nd half should be like a snowball flying downhill...
2nd Half, Miami only scored a FG.

20-7, they got a single fluke TD on Offense/4th and 7, and still won by 2 TDs

They should trade for Zeke Elliott. I don't think Chase Edmonds or Raheem Mostert scare any DCs. Developing a good run game to take pressure of Tua would be prudent.

Is this an acronym I haven't learned yet or should I be performing the heimlich maneuver?

Seinfeld Classic!
Yes 😄 I've seen every episode, some probably 10 times. Never seen it as an acronym until today though. Learn something new every day.

The oline needs to get better first. Zeke doesn't scare any coordinators now.

I disagree. Small sample size, but he was ripping off over 5 YPC against a legit defense with an OL that cannot be any better than Miami's and is likely way worse with the injuries. I know it's trite, but he seems to be in better shape (lighter) than previous years. I'd be far more concerned game planning for Zeke than any RB Miami has right now. Those are all 3rd down backs masquerading as bell cows.

It's a small sample size, but Zeke hasn't impressed PFF in 2022 thus far. And not in 2021 either. He and Edmonds are not that far apart at this stage of his career.

Prediction: BAL
Sell asap in dynasty?
Not sure. BAL was missing people in the secondary. Great game for Tua highlighting his strengths in the 2nd half and weaknesses in the first half.
Should we get the anointing oils ready for him?
No. If he has a good game next week vs the best defense in the NFL, the Bills, then I may change my mind. Tua made plays and had some help. Gesicki with a sick catch for a TD. Hill getting wide open twice. Waddle with some touch catches. Tua scrambled to buy time today.

Miami is looking like a very smart franchise. Build up all your skill positions around Tua while stock piling picks. If Tua doesn't ball out (and he sure did today) at least you KNOW you gave him everything a QB needs to succeed and you move on.

Tua Tagovailoa completed 35-of-50 pass attempts for 468 yards, six touchdowns, and two interceptions in the Dolphins' 42-38 Week 2 win against the Ravens.

In another pass-heavy attack, Tagovailoa picked apart Baltimore's banged-up secondary with short passes Jaylen Waddle and downfield shots -- however underthrown -- to Tyreek Hill. Tagovailoa led Miami back from a massive second half deficit while the Dolphins defense mostly contained Lamar Jackson and the Ravens passing offense in the fourth quarter. Miami kept Tua clean in the pocket for much of the second half after struggling to protect him in the first half. And Tua delivered over and over again against a Baltimore coverage unit that stood no chance against Waddle and Hill. Waddle caught Tua's sixth touchdown to take the lead with under a minute to play. On the day, Waddle saw an absurd 19 targets. If Miami's offense remains unapologetically pass heavy, Hill and Waddle could be elite fantasy options every week. Tua has thrown 83 passes through two weeks in the team's new offense.

It sounds better than it really was

:lmao::lmao::lmao:
I came here specifically for this take
Let's roll back to 35-14...I am as shocked as anybody at what he pulled off in the 4th Q. I think his WRs had a lot to do with it, I re-watched the 4th and there are some questionable decisions but it worked out and nobody will remember the hand he played in Miami being down 28-7 and 35-14...

Bring on the Bills

@IvanKaramazov
@Steve Tasker
@GroveDiesel

And the rest of the Bills Mafia
