Questions About These DBs (1 Viewer)

There are a few players I am looking for further insight on and was hoping you guys could provide your opinions.

1. CB Malcolm Jenkins (NO) - Put up some nice tackle numbers the last 6 games of the season while filling in for the injured Jabari Greer. He has been moved to safety which isn't a big surprise. What do you see his long-term value being? He probably won't see a ton of playing time until Darren Sharper moves on.

2. FS Kerry Rhodes (ARI) - He was once a fantasy stud, but has quickly plummeted down to earth the last few seasons. Does his move to Arizona improve his value (different team, different scheme)?

3. CB Aqib Talib (TB) - He put up some decent tackle numbers last season and has 9 INTs in his first two seasons in the league. It's hard not to salivate when thinking about his fantasy potential in that Tampa-2 scheme that made Ronde Barber a fantasy stud. My only concern is that he may be too good of a cover corner and that team's will avoid throwing his way. Where do you see Talib's value going once R. Barber retires?

4. SS James Butler (StL) - Butler's had alright tackle numbers the last two seasons, but I would expect more out of the SS position in St. Louis since their defense is always on the field. He did up his production towards the end of the season when Otogwe was struggling with injuries. Does Butler carry that production over to this season or is he always destined to put up 70 total tackles with a few picks?

There's some potential for Jenkins to be one of those free safeties that get enough tackles to crack the top 25. He's much closer to the younger Darren Sharper than the older Darren Sharper in that respect. But much depends on what the SS and OLB depth charts look like when he takes over. Right now, the OLB spots are weak enough that he'll have value even if Roman Harper remains an in-the-box force. That may change by this time next season.

Something has to give in Arizona this year. On paper, they're weak up the middle in the front seven and there's no guarantee they'll be controlling the clock on offense which should leave plenty of opportunity. I think it's Daryl Washington and Adrian Wilson that benefit most, but the FS position can have 65+ solo value if the ILB play is below average. Until we see how things break in camp, I think he's stuck in his usual DB3 with upside but low and inconsistent floor expectation.

The Tampa-2 was a major factor, but a lot of Barber's fantasy value came when he was moved into the slot on nickel downs when he functioned as an extra linebacker on running plays and had more tackle opportunity over the middle zones. I don't think Talib fits in that role, so his ceiling won't approach to 80 solo years that Barber used to have. I think Talib is a 60-70 solo guy with some big play value, probably a CB2+/flex DB.

Completely agree. I'd really like to rank Butler in the top 20 given his situation, but he's never been consistent enough to warrant it. Last season was promising and he's a priority pickup/starter if he starts well, but I wouldn't trust him as more than a backup with upside yet.
