Quit dipping, how'd you do it? (1 Viewer)

I'm at least a can/day and a couple packs of camels/week when I'm drinking. Tried chantix but that made me sick to my stomach. Quit dipping for 10 days about a year ago, but I couldn't shake the "fog" and headaches. Any pointers?
If you're drinking enough each week that you have time to bang out a couple packs of camels while drinking, then you may want to take a serious look at both. The fog and headaches might just be a hangover and crappy breathing and dehydration. Maybe try drinking a lot more water and take a multivitamin, see if you can get a little extra sleep and cut the booze back. You might be surprised how much better you feel.

Kodiak...yea, that's pretty much me (cept I'm older, which means I've been doing it longer). I KNOW YOU HAVE TO WANT TO QUIT...which, I don't. If you, do its all mind over matter, per se. I've quit for weeks and months at a time, but not by my choice...Guess that's why I still do it.

Guess the only advice I can give is to turn the vice into something productive...I DO find that when I'm busy, I don't have any cravings or anything to dip...I've gone days with only one dip (I always have one when I get in the shower, and that would be the one I can't quit, at least now) and not thought anything about it...Then I have days when I'm bored and that's all I do.

The only time I won't put one in is when I'm going to workout, So at least that's something productive.
Disagree. Can of Copenhagen/day for almost 20 years. Did not want to quit. Went in to Dr's office with a big phatty in my lip and refused to hand over my tin.

Got hypnotized. Haven't wanted a dip in over 3 yrs now.

Strongly recommended.
7 years now clean. I've had buddies get hypnotized since I did, worked for them too.And we were all can a day cope, first in the morning, fall asleep with one in at night type addicts.

Hardest thing I ever did was quit this stuff. Used the patch and chewed bubble gum to ween myself off of it, and have been off of dip for a few years now.

The patch helps with the fogginess you're talking about, since it's delivering small doses of nicotene over the course of the day vs. the motherload you're getting in a lip. Cold turkey, did not work for me at least.

Best of luck - you'll get there!

I'm at about a can a day myself. Have you heard of Grinds? I'be been thinking about trying them. It was on Shark Tank. I've read about them on their website. From what I can gather...

2 guys that dipped a ton in college (I think they were baseball players) we up late working on a project for school. They wanted something to help them stay awake, and didn't have many options because of the time of night, and the deadline was soon approaching. They decided to start dipping coffee grinds. They thought it was pretty good, and a good alternative to dip.

They decided to give it a go and try it as a business. Some of the early pouches they made weren't that great. They tried to market it though baseball. Wasn't really working. Then Bruce Bocce of the Giants won the WS, and somehow sent them a note that he had been using Grinds to help him quit dip and it really helped.

Bruce agreed to be a spokesman. They kind of re-invested in the product to make it better. Went on Shark Tank. I don't know if they got $ from Shark Tank, but they have been making it since. Site says it's essentially like making coffee in your mouth.

I swear when I would dip in the morning I've told my friends I wish they made coffee or espresso flavored dip. I think I'm going to give the Grinds a try... only problem for me is I usually dip before I go to bed and I don't want to have caffene that late. But maybe nicotine is worse anyway?

Dipping is the grossest habit anyone can partake in. Nobody wants to see you spit out what looks like diarrhea, especially if you're one of those meatheads who spits in a clear bottle or jar for some reason. The rest of society thinks you are incredibly gross and that alone should get you to quit.

Believe it or not, I don't/didn't care what the rest of society thinks about me.

I am in the process of quitting now. I read a lot of info on that killthecan.org website and it was very helpful. This is pretty much what I've done, and where I'm at now.

I read a few websites that give you steps on how to quit. One of the things they said to do was write down all the reasons you would like to quit. They could be something as serious as doing it for your kids so you don’t get cancer, to something as small as not having to find a spit bottle constantly. I didn’t do this, but I did start thinking about how inconvenient it can be at times. One of the things I hated about dipping is when I was sitting at home relaxing watching TV, then realizing I was about to run out, and knowing I had to get up and go to the store to get some more because I knew I couldn’t go without it. This was especially a pain when I was tired, and in the winter when it was freezing out. So I thought about all the reasons I wanted to quit… and when you stop and think about it there are a lot.

The site said that if you quit, the nicotine will be out of your system after 3-4 days, and after that all you have to do is battle the ‘triggers’ that make you want to dip. For me, I always wanted a dip first thing in the morning, when I shower, and right after I ate. If you learn to recognize the ‘triggers’... the recognition will help you get over them in the future.

To get through the first 3-4 days it was recommended that you stock up on non-nicotine ‘replacements’. I bought 2 bags of beef jerky, 2 cans of Smokey Mountain dip (1 straight flavor, 1 wintergreen), and a couple containers of mints. I finished off what I hope is my last can on a Wednesday night. Thursday that week I was going to use my replacements.

I didn’t use the mints that much. The beef jerky did help some but I didn’t rely on it much. The biggest help was the Smokey Mountain dip which is readily available at most Wal-Marts. I tried the straight flavor and thought it was awful. I threw it out immediately. Then I tried the Wintergreen and was very surprised. I liked it quite a bit. They did a really good job with it. Those first 3 days I relied heavily on the Smokey Mountain Wintergreen. It is basically corn silk ground up mixed with molasses, and whatever else they use to make the wintergreen flavor.

I went through the first can of Smokey Mountain wintergreen in the first day… and went to Wal-Mart to get 2 more cans. That 3rd day I dipped quite a bit of Smokey Mountain. If I didn’t have it available no way would I have made it. I occasionally chewed on the beef jerky and ate some mints, but they don’t have the same effect. I think part of me missed the actually spitting maybe? I made it through my 3rd and 4th day heavily relying on Smokey Mountain and knew it was just physical ‘triggers’ I would need to worry about from that point on.

So on my 4th day as I was going through the Smokey Mountain like crazy, I started researching all the other alternatives, and reading reviews on the killthecan.org site. I decided I wanted to pick out a few alternatives and give them a shot. I decided to make orders for the Grinds coffee pouches I mentioned earlier. I ordered Jake’s Mint chew. I ordered Root 100 ginseng chew. I ordered all sampler packs with different flavors. As I waited for them to deliver I still relied on Smokey Mountain wintergreen.

I finally got the other products in and have been sampling them for about a week now. I did not take well to the Root 100 ginseng chew at all. It was really odd. Not like chew at all. The reviews explained that it was not like dip, and I knew that going in, but it was the only one of its kind so I wanted to at least try it. Now I know I don’t like it… haha.

I found Jake’s Mint chew to be pretty awesome. I like it better than the Smokey Mountain. Smokey Mountain is more like dip, a little more wet than Jake’s… but Jakes smells and tastes really fresh. It has a fresh smell and feel to it. It’s almost like putting garden mint leaves in your mouth. It packs well and I took to it really well. So far I’ve tried most of the different flavors in the sampler pack. The first flavor I tried was Natural Spearmint and I liked it a lot. Every flavor I tried since then hasn’t been as good. I am 99% sure I am going to continue to use Jake’s, and when I run through all the sampler flavors I’ll probably stick with the Spearmint. I used to dip Skoal Spearmint every now and then and it is very similar. Jakes is USDA certified organic and you can swallow the juice. I don’t… I tried it and it just seems weird. They say the mint can actually be good for your digestion. I might get used to it in the future but it just seemed strange for now.

I really like the Grinds coffee pouches too. When I first got the coffee pouches I wasn’t that impressed. The pouches are really small and you need 2 or 3 of them to feel like an actual dip. They weren’t very moist either so I didn’t get much juice from them. I was disappointed off the bat… but then I discovered something that was pretty awesome. I started putting in 3 pouches right before I drank my morning coffee. When you have the pouches in they give you the physical feel of having a dip in. Then when you drink coffee it moistens the pouches and kind of kick starts the pouches. They have some of the same ingredients from energy drinks in the coffee pouches so it can be a good morning kick off thing too. The pouches come in different flavors and so far I’ve tried peppermint, mocha, and vanilla. So far I like the mocha best. I don’t think the mint flavors mix well with coffee. I like the flavors that most represent normal coffee. I haven’t tried mint chocolate or cinnamon roll yet, but I think I’ll probably stick with mocha.

So after going through all this, this is what I foresee for the future. I will most likely continue to order Grinds coffee pouches in mocha, and Jake’s Mint Chew in Natural Spearmint. I put the pouches in for my morning routine when I drink coffee, then in the afternoon / evening if I feel the urge or hit a ‘trigger’ and want a dip I’ll throw in the Jake’s Mint Chew. I don’t want to jinx it, but I don’t think I’ll end up going back to dip. I think the main reason is that I actually like the flavor and feel of the alternatives. I know that I might actually have just created another addiction, but it literally doesn’t feel the same. I like the Grinds and Jakes, but I never have that feeling like I HAVE TO HAVE THIS ####! Like you do with dip. The Grinds and coffee is awesome. I used to always drink coffee in the morning then put in a dip after. I never did both at the same time out of fear of swallowing dip, and being able to have that dip feeling while drinking coffee is an experience I really like. So far I am at 2 weeks and feeling really good about it.

I have some Nicorette gum ordered. Have used it in the past to cut way back. Going to try to quit gradually.

I played baseball too and have several friends who have been dipping for 30 years. Man, if Tony Gwynn doesn't wake them up (now Schilling), nothing will. Sure hope they quit.

You're not in the south, are you?

I quit in January after 3 years of not really heavy use but a few cans a week. Driving was easily the worst. I almost picked up a can this weekend driving home late. I didn't, mostly because I'm training for an endurance event and tobacco will be bad for the training.

I've quit 3 times now.

I am still quit. I looked at the time stamp of my last post and checked my calander... and I'm pretty sure the first day of my quit was 4/17. So that's a little over 4 months now.

Update: my last post I was really into the Grindz coffee pouches, but I actually haven't stuck with them. I did end up sticking with the Jake's Mint Chew. I order directly from them on their website: http://www.jakesmintchew.com/ . I order 10 cans at a time for about $30 to $35 and they normally last me about a month. I don't dip Jakes all the time like I did with dip, but I have one every now and then. I swallow the juice when I dip Jakes and at this point it just seems like swallowing the juice from Spearmint gum. I like it a lot. Not having to find a bottle every time makes it really easy.

The other thing I started doing to help combat any urge is sunflower seeds. I am worried I might have a sunflower seed problem now! There are a ton of sunflower seed flavors out there and I found a brand called Big's that makes 'Sizzlin Bacon' flavor. It says it's made with J&D Bacon Salt. They are dangerous. I can go throug a whole large pouch of them in a couple days just sitting at my desk at work.

So... now I have a mint chew and a sunflower seed problem. But I am still quit!

I hate to be "that guy", but you're not really quitting, you're just prolonging the eventual, which will be a withdrawal period that you will need to go through to quit the nicotine.

Haha. Exactly. I get on the sunflower seed kick once in a while also. Not sure which is worse, the chew or how bad my mouth gets torn up from seeds.

Going on almost 5 years quit. I had one relapse, which was last summer while playing golf. I put in a small one, only lasted for about 4 minutes before I wanted to throw up. I'll never try again.

But damn I sure do miss it when I am doing projects around the house.

I understand and agree with the comment. The last time I was on the gum, it was easier to reduce the usage though.

Today is my last day chewing. I am sad.

Have 10 cans of fake chew lined up and $150 worth of Nicorette mints ready. Goal tonight is to drink heavily and chew a ton, so that I will be hungover tomorrow and not want it so quickly.

I have been chewing for 21 years and usually have my first chew in the shower. I probably have a chew in 15 hours a day.

That's pretty hardcore. Best of luck to you. I have been chew free since I believe July, but still have cravings. Did it the same way, got tanked with a two day hangover and went cold turkey.

I was a hardcore dipper from the age of 15 to 38. A can of Copenhagen a day - at least. I quit cold turkey on my son's 6th birthday 8 years ago. Hardest thing I ever did in my life, but so worth it. A buddy of mine, the same age as me, only a bit more well known, wasn't ale to quit - until he got diagnosed with mouth cancer last year. He is recovering from surgery and knock-on-wood is doing reasonably well. Wishes he could have quit years ago.

Used to chew a little. Never that much and not at all now for several years. Good on you fellas quitting. Keeping fighting!

I'm attempting to quit starting today...for like the 159th time. Hopefully this is the time that sticks. It really comes down to mind over matter for me. I need to beat back the thoughts of having a dip (and how much I enjoy it) more than any physical cravings.

I chew pretty much all day long. The only times I dont have a dip in is when I'm eating or sleeping. I quit for 3 years once. I used the patch that time and it worked ok. The issue for me is that I really dont want to quit.

I started quitting three Christmases ago now. I took Chantix and weaned myself from over a can a day down to one dip a day by the end of January. By Valentines Day, I still couldn't see myself giving it up completely too easily, and just told myself I had to. I drank myself to sleep every night, but I hadn't gotten a dip until Easter. Decided then I should probably slow down on the alcohol, which to my surprise, sent my blood pressure to 180/130 (hfs!).

I got a dip on Easter, on my birthday, and my plan was to get one on my birthday every year to see if it ever made me throw up as it did back when I was a kid and just starting. I got another on my birthday this year, and while I didn't throw up, I got sick enough to decide never to try that again.

Good luck to anyone trying to quit.

I don't miss it a bit. I was around someone last night in New Orleans on NYE, having to get a dip and find trash cans to spit in whenever we were indoors.

I used to dip all day too, backreading chat a little. I will try to read more of the thread later. No one dipped more than me, and I did it from probably 12 y/o until I was 36, I think. I Tried to quit several times and only my third attempt with Chantix was successful.

It'll be a year this month.

Thought about picking up a can on a long drive a few months ago, on the way home from an ironman. But realized that would be a special kind of stupid.

Otherwise don't miss it much.

Sunflower seeds are addictive too.

Good on all of you putting the tin down. It was the hardest thing for me to do but it's been about 14 years & I've never had a problem wanting to go back. I chew gum like I have a never ending supply but t works for me. Be careful with seeds should you go that route, especially if you are doing the slated/flavored ones. Your blood pressure will skyrocket due to the huge increase in sodium intake.

Seriously. Get hypnotized. It makes quitting so simple with no withdrawals. All of you sound like me, can a day (at the minimum) cope 20 yr chewers. Why put yourself through hell when it can be so easy?

Quit a 1+ can a day habit 15 years ago on December 21st.

Cold turkey is the way to go. It sucks but it gets easier after a couple days/weeks. Good Luck!!

Well, I made it through NYD without dipping...here's to 364 more.

Also made it through taking down the Christmas lights

Quitting dip was the hardest thing I've ever done. Started Sophomore year in HS and quit mid-way through college. There were days early on that I felt like a crack addict: shakes, bad headaches, going for drives to pick something up a 7-11 or WaWa just to gaze longingly at the tins of dip. Only relapsed once and felt so disgusted with myself that I never did it again.

Good luck for everyone trying to quit. It sucks, but it's worth it in the long run.

I have quit a few times and always ended up going back - over the course of 30 years.... I quit when my son was before. Went back when I got divorced. Quit after that but only for a couple of years. During my younger years - high school - I dipped Copenhagen. Now its skoal - it isn't nearly as harsh. Weird thing is I go all day without a dip... I work somewhat long hours but generally try to go in on the early side, leave the office at a decent hour, get to the gym and make it home to spend a couple of hours with the family and in goes a dip. I think the only way I ever manage to quit ( as I have trouble sleeping without a dip) is getting a nasty flu or bug where I don't want to dip for a couple of days and then I know I am through the hard part.......

I have had zero real chew in 2015. The fake stuff has been a good crutch, but I'm giving it up on New Year's Day.

I still miss it, but I have no desire to go back - the quitting is way too hard.

Best of luck for those who want to kick the habit.

I've always just quit cold turkey and for the last couple of years I've gone weeks without it and also done it weeks at a time. Been strictly a pouch guy anytime I've fallen off the wagon the last couple of years.

I bumped this thread bc I stumbled up Dr. Brad Rodu. Dipping does not cause cancer. Curt Schilling and Tony Gwynn (rip) had doctors that both say they had cancer and neither say dipping was the cause.

I'm doing snus again. Buying it from Sweden where it is processed differently. Allegedly, zero cases of cancer from snus in Sweden.
